Smith’s (2007) mentions the relationship between Horney’s (1936) article and Freud’s (1910) theory on how someone’s behavior came about. After reading the lecture on hypnosis and the unconscious thoughts, I noticed that Freud’s reasoning for some patient’s surpressed thoughts held true for more theories like Horney and Shedler but the origin of the behavior disagreed with future studies. Freud (1910) seemed to use more biological causes to reason with the behavior such as sexual motives brought up in his lectures, but Horney (1936) focuses more on the impact of external influences. In my developmental psychology class (and the previous Freud article) we discussed his psycho sexual stage and how the certain stages and fixatins can predict behvaiors and the level of ego the patient is developing for people as they grow older. Horney’s attachment theory goes along the same path just with different causes of the behaviors. In Smith’s (2007) article about Horney, she mentions Horney’s (1936) idea of the ideal self. I think her idea of the self concept is mostly consistent with McAdam‘s (2010) three layers of the roles people play throughout a life time. In McAdams’s levels he describes dispositional trait level to be the people being actors and fidnign themselves, fidning their reason or discovering what they want to do as they get older. This stage correlates with Horney’s (1936) level of real self because they fidn out who they really are and start to develop a lifestyle that fits their own wants and needs. The second layer of McAdams model, characteristics adaptations correlates with the ideal self that Smith (2007) describes. By acting as an agent you start to learn how you want to react to certain factors in your environment, just like the description of the ideal self being figuring out how to address negative events in our life. The last level, life narrative is basically a play book of how you decided to deal with certain aspects in your life based on
