Outside societal influences can make children choose to play with certain toys over others out of feelings of wanting to fit in. Situations like this can show how even though children may want to play with non-stereotypical gender-typed toys, they may choose to do so anyway because of societal influence. This stunts their development in reaching their fullest skill potential for both boys and girls. Tarja Raag, a psychology professor at Colby College conducted a study to examine the influences of social expectations of gender, gender stereotypes, and situational constraints on children’s toy choices. Many people recognize the dangers of gender stereotyping; yet continue to make these types of generalizations. Traditionally, the female stereotypic role is to marry and have children. She is to put her family's welfare before her own; be loving, compassionate, nurturing, and sympathetic; and find time to be sexy and feel beautiful.
