Course Description

This course prepares students to address the concepts of personnel development as managers. Students learn criteria for developing effective job analysis, appraisal systems, and appropriate career development plans for employees. Other topics include personnel selection, employee compensation, benefits, training, workplace diversity, discipline, employee rights, unions, and management behaviors.


Faculty and students/learners will be held responsible for understanding and adhering to all policies contained within the following two documents:

Week One Discussion Questions

It is crucial for a manager to know and understand the fair employment laws. What can you do to create a supportive environment in which your employees understand these laws? Which communication strategies would you recommend?

What is the best way to ensure that an organization is complying with employment laws? Explain your answer.

How can an organization ensure they are complying with employment law? What resources might they use to validate their compliance?

What is a difference in a union and nonunion organization? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each organization type? Provide an example of a union organization and of a nonunion organization.

Week Two Discussion Questions

What are the benefits of understanding job analysis information as an operating manager? How can this information help you accomplish specific goals or milestones? How can you use the information to create a productive work environment?

Are job descriptions a tool that is needed within an organization? How does a job description help organize and align an organization’s infrastructure? Can a job description be used to identify operation gaps or requirements required by the entity? Why or why not?

As a manager, which job analysis method would you prefer to use? How would you overcome the disadvantages associated with this method? Explain.

Why is a job description important within the organization? Are there non-human resource related aspects or areas of an organization that job descriptions affect? If so, what are these and why would a job description affect these areas of business?

What type of compensation component would you like to have through your employer that is not currently offered? Explain your rationale. Is your request consistent with your employer’s organizational goals?

What do you think employees’ general attitudes are towards the benefits packages? How can an organization communicate the value of a benefits package?

How do demographic regions play a role within an employee’s compensation? What type of data would be needed to determine an employee’s compensation? Explain your answer.

When determining an employee’s compensation package, what is more important: work experience or education? Provide an example that supports your choice and a rationale that validates your position.

Do you think that an employee’s age or living status affects the organization’s decisions about benefits and compensation? Explain why or why not.

Week Four Discussion Questions

Aside from individual attributes, which factors would you consider most important in recruiting employees? How would these factors influence a recruitment strategy for an organization?

What is the relationship between the business strategy and an entity’s organizational culture regarding staffing decisions? Is it possible to strengthen one without the other? Explain your answer?

Which employee selection method would you recommend using? Provide an example and explain both the positives and negatives attributed to this method.

Which do you consider more valuable: external or internal recruitment? What are the advantages and disadvantages of each? Explain the factors of each recruitment strategy and why an organization would choose one over the other. Explain your answer using an organization that you are familiar with.

Week Five Discussion Questions

Why is the delivery of an organizational-training program important to employees’ overall success? Provide examples of different delivery methods and their effects on various audiences.

What method or methods are used to train employees in your workplace or one you are familiar with? Is it effective? Explain improvements and offer suggestions you think will benefit the training program in that workplace.

What do you think are the key components within a performance management plan? Should the evaluators have the ability to easily quantify key performance indicators from the plan? Why or why not?

Within your current or past employment, do you think the training you participated in was beneficial? Briefly describe what the company was or is doing to promote training. What suggestions do you have to increase the effectiveness of the training program? Week Six Discussion Questions

What concerns and considerations should managers be aware of regarding diversity within a working environment? How do managers promote diversity appropriately? Explain your answer.

Diversity is a challenge in any environment. With the immersion of a global business, how important is it to understand the nature of diversity? What can diversity provide to your work environment? How can you, as a manager, create and sustain a diversified and productive environment? How might you handle diversity-related conflicts in your work environment?

How does diversity play a part within the workplace? In what ways would you manage a diverse workforce?

Describe some of the advantages or disadvantages of having a diverse environment. In what ways does conflict facilitate creativity within a diverse workforce? What effects does diversity have on a group or team-based environment?

As a manager, is there a need to be aware of your diverse environment? What managerial steps would you take to prepare for this type of work environment and why?
