“Chapter 2” of No Promises in the Wind begins with the author, Irene Hunt, placing Howie on a vacant lot rummaging through trash where a grocery company had dumped a pile of crates onto the ground. Unfortunately, his mother does not care much for him, therefore he has had to learn to survive on his own. Although Josh and Howie are going through troubling times in their lives, they tend to embellish themselves in music. The banjo is Howie’s instrument, and Josh’s is the piano.
