Killing Us Softly: Advertising's Image of Women was a video of the speech by Jean Kilbourne. Jean Kilbourne spoke on how the media portrays women in an unnatural way and the differences on how they portray men vs. women. I attended this event to meet the intellectual experience and viewed it as something I just had to do and get it over with. This event was more enjoyable than I originally thought it would be.

The event started at four o'clock, so I went straight there after my biology class had ended. Angelika Hoelger, the professor who held the event, had just pushed play as I was walking into the room. It wasn't hard to find a seat since there were only six or seven other people who attended the event. Attendees were given a t-shirt and a survey on the event. The survey asked questions, such as: what you learned, if you had been to any common experience events before, and if enjoyed it. …show more content…
She stated that women are usually showed as being weak and childlike, where as men are usually shown being strong or tough. There were also a lot of pictures shown to help back up her statements. Kilbourne used pictures of models or celebrities before and after they were placed on magazine covers. She used a quote from Cindy Crawford that stated "I wish I looked like Cindy Crawford" meaning that she was changed so much that she looks like a different person. Advertising portrays women who are versions of "ideal beauty" but actual women can't look like this. Evidence was given that fashion designers have told super models, who are size 0, that they were too fat to fit into the clothes. She stated that there are more depressed women in recent times because they're trying to look like the women on magazine covers, but the women on the covers don't even look like that themselves.
