Thank You Ryan! Today, the country of North Korea and its dictator, Kim Jong Un, is one of many dictated nations in the world. A dictatorship is a type of government that consists of one main ruler, or a dictator. Kim Jong Un, 33, is the current dictator of North Korea, and has been ruling for the past 2 years. Many of the citizens in North Korea have no choice or say in their lives. The government freely detains or even puts to death citizens that stray from official messaging in any way. Simply listening to outside media not sanctioned by the state can result in death. Jobs, housing, and food are assigned and or given in rations by the government. There are many strict laws referring to religion, education, and freedoms for citizens. For

Korea and Kim Jong Un

...Madison Koci Stewart Frame GWC PS110 Due: 12/12/13 North Korea and Kim Jong Un Kim Jong Un is the the 29-year-old ruler of North Korea, one of the most distinctive and unpredictable countries in the world. It is a cocktail of poisonous elements: autocratic, repressive, isolated and poor (Powell). Its regime is dangerous not only to its people but also to the rest of the world. Its actions have had an unsettling impact on international relations in northeast Asia, particularly its nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and its shelling of Yeonpyeong Island in 2010, all of which led to tensions between China and the united States (Ahn). North Korea’s present and future, therefore, are of global concern (Powell). North Korea is "a Stalinist monarchy" where bloodlines, and only bloodlines, determine who the next dictator will be--no matter how young or inexperienced that person may be, notes South Korean scholar Cheong Seong-chang (Ahn). Nearly 30,000 U.S. troops sit across the border, helping defend South Korea against the 1.2 million-member army, most of it which exists within 30 miles of the demilitarized zone. Over the past decade, despite crippling economic sanctions imposed by most of the outside world, North Korea has defiantly developed and tested nuclear weapons and the long-range missiles needed to deliver them (Ahn). Western intelligence agencies make an educated guess that Pyongyang is holding 8 to 12 nuclear weapons. The hard truth is that North Korea is Asia's last...

How Did North Korea Contribute To The Cold War?

...North Korea blamed the rise of hostilities on Seoul’s recent decision to resume anti-Pyongyang broadcasts from its side of the border. Kim Jong Un’s government threatened military action if the loudspeakers were not torn down but South Korea refused to do so. Loudspeakers have been used as a tactical weapon for psychological warfare along the Korean border zone for over four decades. They can be heard from distances far away potentially reaching North Korean civilians who live near the DMZ and the soldiers stationed in the vicinity. South Korean military officials believe this kind of psychological warfare is very effective against the...

The World in 2008

...should—just—avoid recession, but it will be China (for the first time the biggest contributor to global growth) along with India and other emerging markets that will shine. Another focus of attention will be climate change. As China replaces America as the world’s biggest producer of greenhouse gases, serious efforts on global warming depend on the serious involvement of those two countries. If 2007 was the year when this rose to the top of the global agenda, in 2008 people will expect action. It is striking that green is a theme that links all the contributions from political leaders in this volume, whether at the city level (Michael Bloomberg), the national level (Felipe Calderón, Nancy Pelosi, Nicolas Sarkozy) or the supranational level (the UN’s Ban Ki-moon, ASEAN’s Surin Pitsuwan). The politicians have talked the issue up; will they now let people down? A third preoccupation will be geopolitical risk. The conventional wisdom is that America is...
