Nowadays, leadership is emphasized in school and the workplace. Leadership doesn’t come naturally to others but these skills are teachable. A select few are chosen or volunteer to lead a group. I am usually the one to volunteer. People have come up to me and told me that I inspire them to be better. Sometimes it's hard to be a leader and I just want to take the back seat. It is especially challenging to get everyone on board with one idea. It is even more difficult to persuade all participants to reach a goal by taking the same route. I have been a youth ambassador in Japan, leading workshops on social justice issues in America with fellow high schoolers. I am an active youth leader at Global Kids where I have led campaigns and workshops in …show more content…
I am a Democratic leader. I believe that everyone should have a chance to participate and involvement is the key to a successful team. Throughout most of my high school career, I have been in leadership positions that require facilitation. As a Take-Out Specialist at Chipotle, I am constantly asking my crew members how I can better market the store to the community and how everyone should be trained to do Table Touches. Although I listen to suggestions, I am the person who markets the store and finalizes the style that everyone will be trained in. However, my decisions are usually a combination of all ideas expressed. As President of National Honor Society, I use the same leadership style by running meetings using Robert’s Rules of Order. I facilitate the meetings while the other members discuss the issues at hand and how to address them. After some discussion, members vote on a decision that I have given only partial input. Leaders are constantly learning about how they can better themselves. Overall, I believe I need to work on incorporating pieces of different leadership styles into what I do now. As President of National Honor Society, I should be able to trust that members will be able to complete the required individual community service hours on their own. I need to create a different culture with any team I am working with that encourages us to trust each other. Secondly, I need to be more understanding. As much as I agree with this statement, I also have my differences. I would define leadership as a process dependent on interactive, “influence” relationships between people who intend substantial changes reflecting their mutual purposes. The essence of leadership lies in the process of influencing. Let's say that influence means one person's actions designed to change another person's attitudes, beliefs, values or behavior. Without influence we cannot exercise leadership. The process of influencing cannot occur without relationships between people that make that influence possible. I use the term “interactive” to show these influence relationships as being mutual, reciprocal and multi-directional. In other words, followers influence leaders, leaders influence followers, and peers influence each other. The words “leader” and “follower” are obvious by their absence in my definition.
