Martin Luther King Jr. urges his justification about the morality of the Vietnamese war

based on his own personal experiences with the addition of the usage of emotional vocabulary

in order to emphasize his argument. Since, the audience are people in the U.S, the orator

relates the elements of the war with the American society.

Martin Luther King firstly states an overall sentiment of himself about the war by using

highly sentimental terms; thus, he raises awareness of the actions the American government.

The preacher first starts off his speech by urging that there is a ‘facile connection’ between the

that the government is not being a good model for the young, who are the future of the nation.

By repeating the phrase ‘ for the sake of’ when describing his reaction of his own anecdote , the

orator ,once again, conveys a mood that the war is injustice.

The orator ends his speech by relating his motto, ‘To save the soul of America’ as a civil rights

leader with the Vietnamese war because he considers peace as important as civil rights; in

order to emphasize the significance of ‘peace’. In addition, he proclaims that no on should

ignore the current war because the soul of America should be ‘saved’ for the ‘health’ of the U.S.

Vocabularies and phrases, such as ‘save’ , ‘for the health of our land’ inspires the audience of

the meaning the war contains and conveys a sense of significance of stopping the war.

In conclusion, Martin Luther king mainly uses sentimental terms and emotional anecdotes and

by comparing it with the American community in order to move and encourage the spectators ,

who are the ones that are capable of ending the war, to realize the urgency of the problem
