Mgt/245 Perception and Decision Making

...Assignment: Perception and Decision Making MGT/245 People’s perceptions help define their viewpoints. Perception comes to people through their senses. Perception means “the act or faculty of apprehending by means of the senses or of the mind; cognition; understanding.” (Dictionary.com). From a different perspective, perception means organizing, understanding, receiving, and selecting information that can sometimes result in a disagreement. People that view things from their own perspective has the highest potential of things leading to a disagreement, because different viewpoints has a lot of different perspectives on how stuff should be accomplished. It is pretty much inevitable, within an organization, that the employees will not always be content and agree with their views of behavior, job tasks, working conditions, benefits, and pay rates. The aspects of perception has to do with how certain tasks and information is selected, understood, and organized. These are all the decision making faculties and they drastically differ from one to another. With the current research beginning, it has begun to support the theory called “active perception”. Within this theory, a dynamic relationship exists between the perceptions of the senses, the surrounding environment, and the brain. Academics have really supported the theory called “passive perception”. The “passive perception” theory has a view of perception where a stimulus is in the environment that is processed by the...

...PART 1 1. “What conditions, if any, do you think justify the use of punishment?” a. I think that there are very few conditions that justify punishment. Punishment should not be in the workplace. The only conditions that should involve punishment are theft, harassment, violence, and any other illegal behavior. I believe the punishment they should receive is a trip to the police station, loss of job, and any other repercussions that should be given in the situation. 2. “Do you think most managers use punishment? If so, why?” a. I think most managers do use punishment. Every manager I have had used punishment, and it did not get good results. I think managers use the punishment card so they can get immediate results so as to avoid punishment from their bosses. 3. “What’s the downside of using punishment? Of using positive reinforcement?” a. The downside of using punishment that the long term results are not as impressive as the long term results for positive reinforcement. Punishment tends to get immediate yet temporary results. Punishment also paves the road for hiding things from the manager, lack of job satisfaction, higher turnover. b. The downside of positive reinforcement is that results take more time. Immediate results are not expected and will not happen in most situations. Positive reinforcement could also lead to employees gaining rewards for things not necessarily reward worthy. The chapter used a good example of this with the employee who was also thirty...

Team Leadership Memo

...Organizational Planning Mario S Surla MGT/521 April 9, 2014 Donald Ratliff Organizational Planning Wal-Mart is an American multinational retail corporation and the top retail store with the lowest prices in the world. It is the biggest private employer and the largest public corporation with over two million employees worldwide. There are approximately 245 million customers and members that visit Wal-Mart each week, globally. It has stores in 27 countries and sales in 2013 were $466 billion. Wal-Mart’s mission statement of having the lowest prices is consistent with controlling cost, innovation and continuous improvement (Fortune 500, 2014). One of the strategic plans of Wal-Mart is to bring back “Made in America” products (“Time”, 2014). One of the reasons for having low prices is because Wal-Mart’s global out-sourcing. Goods and products that are made and bought overseas are cheaper. However, higher and increasing shipping costs, high global oil prices and wages overseas, translated to costlier fuel for ships and airplanes. There are also supply interruptions overseas as the middle class is growing and local demands are increasing in developing countries. This prompted Wal-Mart to re-evaluate its sourcing ways on variety of products. As you know, Wal-Mart does not produce goods or products but this giant retailer is playing a part in the manufacturing rebound in the U.S. It promised to buy $50 billion of U.S. goods over the next 10 years...

Organizational Function

...Organizational Function Bobby Davis MGT/230 January 4th, 2014 Professor Vermuth Organizational Function The organizational structure of a company is the structure of business it plans to operate with and is typically estimated to be the most efficient for the company’s objective. The point of this organizational structure is to allow the company to collaborate on different levels to operate as a one entity or multiple entities. When a company is looking at a structure, it looks for the most efficient ways to categorize the company’s divisions, departments, and partnerships in a way to produce the most return on investment. Walmart and More Walmart was founded in 1962 by Sam Walton. He opened the first Walmart in Rogers, AK. Walmart incorporated in 1969 under the name Walmart Stores, Inc. With more than 245 million customers, the most efficient organizational structure may not be obvious. Today Walmart has over 11,000 stores in 27 countries. Employing 2.2 million people worldwide and generating revenue above $466 billion ("Walmart.com", 2013). Walmart has three separate divisions, two of which are in the United States; Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. The third division is the international division which operates stores internationally. Examples of some companies that use a different approach are Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts. These two use a matrix style organization; there are multiple U.S. divisions, broken up into different geographic territories. Matrix...

Impact of Financial Education on High School

...The Impact of Financial Education in High School and College On Financial Literacy and Subsequent Financial Decision Making by Lewis Mandell Kermit O. Hanson Visiting Professor of Finance and Business Economics Foster School of Business, University of Washington Senior Fellow, Initiative on Financial Security, Aspen Institute Presented at the American Economic Association Meetings San Francisco, CA January 4, 2009 The Impact of Financial Education in High School and College On Financial Literacy and Subsequent Financial Decision Making Abstract: Many consumers appear to lack the financial literacy needed to make financial decisions in their self-interest. A growing number of analysts and politicians are blaming the intersection of low levels of financial literacy with complex, financially-engineered products for the current economic meltdown and have proposed a number of solutions to this problem. These solutions range from mandatory education in personal finance to required simplification of financial products and greatly increased regulation. This paper examines evidence on the effectiveness of personal finance education on both financial literacy and financial behavior. If the problem can be solved through education, it is likely to reduce the perceived need to limit choice in the marketplace for retail financial products. If education is shown to be ineffective, the future of financial product innovation and financial engineering may be greatly limited. Supporting...

Creating and Managing Teams

...Creating and Managing Effective Teams Axia College of University of Phoenix MGT 245 Organizational Behavior June 8, 2008 Organizations today have to be more productive and in order for that management has been dedicated in achieving this goal. Different strategies can be used, however for us, it was decided that selecting different employees with different qualifications would to form a team, would be the best route. We want to engage our employees in the everyday decision making and change to drive performance. Our team had to be formed by five staff members, and their responsibilities would be determined by the role in that team. The team consists of: Assessor + Adviser (offers insightful analysis of options and encourages the search for more information), Creator (Initiates creative ideas),, Controller + Organizer (examines details and enforces rules and provides structure), Promoter + Maintainer (Champions ideas after they are initiated and fights external battles), and Linker + Producer (Coordinates and integrates, provides direction and follow-through). Having to choose the best fit for each role was not an easy task. The decision was based on personalities and previous job experiences. Marcell was the best fit for the A+A role he had been a project manager for Ford’s Jaguar finance dept. and even thou he does not have the knowledge yet on auto design however he has excellent project management skill, and comments from his coworkers saying that...

Toshiba Production Case

...Designing Toshiba’s Notebook Computer Line A Study of Manufacturing Capacity 12/12/2011 MGT 393-03 Introduction We analyzed a Toshiba assembly line plan for a new subnotebook computer.  The engineering section manager, Toshihiro Nakamura, wants to make changes to the line process as designed by the engineers.  The basic assembly line equipment and space already exist within the Toshiba plant, so the subnotebook assembly process must conform to those preexisting constraints.  Specifically, the assembly line is a straight 14.4-meter conveyor system that can accommodate 8 to 12 workers plus one supporter to aid in the assembly process.  The employees work at assembling for 7.5 hours a day.  The computers are assembled from inventory provided by separate employees. Because it is well managed, there is no concern about supply for the line.   Production quantities for the subnotebook computer are to begin at 150 units per day and increase to 250 in a week with the ultimate goal of 300 computers per day.  We used a number of analysis calculations in our decision support model to show the capacity and relative efficiency of different iterations of the assembly line.  We have also shown a possible solution to the main problem of the case:  As the process is designed, it is impossible to attain 300 computers in a 7.5-hour shift using only one line.  The decision support model shows one option for how this can be solved with a given set of assumptions. Discussion The decision...
