...Gwyneth McKenna Military History 4/28/2015 Evolution of Compulsory Service The United States has long been involved in military affairs spanning several centuries. These endeavors require more than simply the machinery, tactical prowess, and financial support. They require manpower. Manpower is the backbone to any and every military operation throughout history. Unfortunately, the United States has not always had the amount of brave soldiers she needs to keep the enemy at bay. In order to combat this lack of manpower, conscription, more commonly known as “the draft”, has been needed to be employed. The military draft is a controversial topic; Serving one’s country is undeniably honorable, but what if it is not a choice? Should you be forced...

Fundamentals of Research Paper

...Fundamentals of Research paper February 10, 2014 Fundamentals of Research Paper The scientific methods and fundamentals of research are as varied as the researchers who use the approaches. “Researchers in disciplines as varied as psychology, biomedicine, business, education, communication, economics, sociology, anthropology, physics, biology, and chemistry all use some variation of this approach.” (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2008). The scientific research method is essentially a form of investigation used by researchers to explore already known facts, gain new insight and education and to disprove or further prove what is believed to be facts. There are three forms of research methods that make research scientific research of; descriptive and observational, experimental, and relational research. The descriptive and observational research method is where the researcher will map out the research using description to allow for the creation of a matrix or map that can be followed. The experimental research method is used to research the effect of an independent variable from a dependent variable. The relational research method employs the relation and correlation of two or more factors. (Rosnow & Rosenthal, 2008). Air Force Medical Treatment Facility for Erm

...Part 1 Abstract Physical fitness is a mandatory requirement by all military personnel. This enables the soldiers maneuver through their daily endeavors of protecting a nation. The nature of the job on the contrary places soldiers at the risk of injuries some of which may materialize at the most unwarranted moments. The military therefore require a highly mechanized medical service, one that secures quality (Patrick,1998). Quality in the provision of medical services encompasses a number of factors key among which is accuracy in diagnosis, treatment and drug prescription. Additionally, data in the medical spheres require secure and integral storage. Most of the diagnoses especially those associated with terminal recurrent illnesses depend largely on the patient history. All the patient details therefore require a secure database and an appropriate filing mechanism. Initially, all these activities were performed manually or mechanically with the medical system relying on paper back files and manual diagnoses. These had a number of pitfalls given the dynamic nature of military operations. Soldiers keep moving from place to place depending on the security needs of the country and they will always need to have their medical services with them. Mechanical administration becomes cumbersome in such conditions with portage prove difficult. It also becomes difficult to keep a sequential filing system for references (Marion, Ball & Joan, 2004). Technological developments...

Unification of the Navy, Army and Air Force

...combined into one service - the Canadian Forces. This process was accomplished by "integration" of the three services, and then Unification into a homogenous organization. I believe that Paul Hellyer helped shape the Canadian Forces into what it is today and also I do think that the integration and unification was a bad thing at the time as if it didn’t happen back in the 1968 it surely would have happen at a later date with General Rick Hillier. I will look into the process that Paul Hellyer took in bringing these three different services together under unification and explore some other opinions that I have found amongst way vast research upon the web. In 1964 the Minister of National Defense Paul Hellyer published the White Paper on Defense. In it he proposed the unification of the three services, the creation of a single command structure reporting to the Chief of Defense Staff and the restructuring of the current geographically based commands into six function-based commands. The process began with the introduction of Bill C-90 creating the CDS’ office and a single chain of command and culminated with Bill 243 the Canadian Forces Reorganization Act in February 1968, which unified the three services and created the Canadian Forces, as we know it today. During the 1990’s to the present the CF’s commitments have increased dramatically when compared to the previous decade. There have also been major fiscal cutbacks whose effect has been to degrade our military capabilities...

Privatization of War

...modern-day private military companies. Since the start till the American Revolution in 1776, the American lands had been owned and controlled by mercenaries and private contractors. Christopher Columbus, the man who got backing from Spain's Queen Isabella and king Ferdinand to launch the voyage and discover the new world relater effectively became a private military contractor or a PMC. This shows that the history of contracting private military -previously by the royal offices and now by the democratically elected governments- have been practiced; Historians claims that mercenaries existed in ancient Egypt to safeguard the Egyptian sovereignty by the rebels of that time. Indeed, mercenaries have transformed into private military contractors after the downfall of Soviet Union in 1991 and the characteristics of a PMC and ancient mercenaries are rather similar. However, under The Hague Convention no. 5 mercenaries are illegal organizations but the role and responsibility of private military organizations is unknown in the international law which gives them free reins to operate in a way which fulfills their greed to make abnormal profits. The operations of private military companies is controversial, their contracts with the governments and other non-state actors is discreet in nature which confines the mass media to focus on their operations. The lack of information and lack of oversight under international law makes people all around the world unaware of private military industries....

Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military

...Unit 6 Project Veterans Having Trouble Finding Jobs After the Military Mark Everhart Kaplan University Professor Sandra Fontana Veterans who have served this country by going to war are quickly realizing that America is not appreciating the sacrifices made for our service members. Veterans are being passed over for employment for many different reasons. Some of these reasons include Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), lack of job skills for performing civilian jobs, and the inability to cope with the transition from military to civilian life. The unemployment rate for veterans is 6.9 percent (Norman, 2012). The government and the employers need to work together to make the transition out of the military a smoother process. The Department of Veteran Affairs cannot process the applications for the G.I. Bill fast enough to accommodate the veterans. Veterans lack the job skills necessary to perform jobs in the civilian sector after the military. All military veterans should have special training, skill and mind set for the transition from military to civilian life, provided by the government and employers to ensure employability after serving their country regardless of how many years of service one has served. Veterans lack the special training and skills that are necessary to compete with the civilian population. Veterans often have jobs that cannot transfer to the civilian world (Hefling, 2011). For instance if they are an infantryman, they cannot get a job as a mechanic....

Mandatory Military Service

...Mandatory military service is a subject that evokes an immediate knee jerk response without benefit of research or facts. Should the federal government require mandatory service of all citizens between the ages of 18 and 35? Yes, I believe it should since the benefits far outweigh the temporary discomfort. All of society benefits by this mandatory civic duty. This topic was selected because of a personal belief in the requirement and the need for drastic action to “repair” today’s society. Today’s society expects an individual to graduate high school and go on to college or directly into the job force. These two only options force a large number of graduates to search for alternatives. One alternative is military service. Other alternatives include, minimum wage positions which require no training, not working at all which means being dependent on someone else, or turning to crime for a living such as theft or drugs. Politicians and lawmakers prefer not to address this issue and pretend it had been finalized. They understand how unpopular they could be and how much opposition they would get from anti-military segment, young adults that would be affected, and those just looking for a platform to vocalize their views. Most politicians look at the immediate effect on their own careers rather than the expected benefits in the future. Lawmakers look at the probable outcry of violating civil rights. A large number of citizens will oppose mandatory military service out of...

A76 Process

...States Air Force Capital Flyer, in 1997, the Office of management and budget requested a cost comparison or A-76 study, over a three-year period that would affect 700 military and civilian positions within the Federal Government and military entities. The A-76 study reviewed the supply and maintenance operations to determine the effectiveness of maintaining these positions as military and Department of Defense (DOD) civilian entities or privatizing the positions through outsourcing. Contrary to popular belief an A-76 study is not contracting. Its purpose is to create cost savings for the DOD through a competitive sourcing program. “The A-76 circular mandates that the government procure commercially available goods and services from the private sector when it makes economic sense to do so”. (A-76 Cost Comparison Overview, p.1, 2002). The cultural makeup of the organization is active duty and federal employees. The A-76 was implemented before our retirement, we would like to revisit the process and research the outcome and its affect on the organization and its members. This research will uncover some of the problems associated with A-76 studies/processes outside of cost effectiveness. This study will provide the effects outside of cost savings, it will demonstrate the negative affects it has on federal/military personnel jobs, civilian pay, training and the morale of the organization.
