Neil Perry Research Paper

The death of Neil Perry is a case most detectives dream of investigating because of the limited number of suspects responsible. Many arguments can be contrived that point to Mr. Perry, Mr. Keating, and even Neil as responsible for the suicide. Mr. Perry’s abrasive attitude and strict control over every aspect of Neil’s life evidently present him as a top suspect. To understand why Mr. Keating is also to blame, one must first examine the influential power his teaching had on his students, especially Neil Perry. Lastly, even though Neil is the victim, his new willingness to pursue what he seeks in life leads him to take daring risks opposing the stringent commands and limitations of his father. In the case of Neil Perry’s suicide, Neil himself …show more content…
Keating, compared to the only two living suspects, should receive less of the blame for Neil Perry’s death. John Keating, Neil’s poetry and literature teacher, glorified preaching to his students to view the world as a sandbox that can be changed and influenced by their lives. To quote Mr. Keating, “That the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?” This connection of poetry towards life affects the boys incredibly considering the recent recommence of the Dead Poet Society meetings. Keating also values his universal lesson of “Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day” as inspiration to defy the standards of conformity. In Neil’s circumstance, his way of “Carpe Diem” was to become an actor, a dream pursued for years but never created a reality. Mr. Keating is a relevant suspect in this case, but probably not first to blame for Neil Perry’s …show more content…
Perry, the father and practically the supreme dictator of Neil, is the number one suspect responsible for Neil’s death. Mr. Perry’s brute personality and excessive control over Neil’s life early on in the film clearly portrays when Neil’s grudge and hatred towards his father first spawns. After a confrontation between Neil and his father outside his dorm room about removing Neil from the school annual, many of Neil’s friends gather around him and ask why he didn’t just say “No” to his father, inferring the task is easy and effortless. Neil denies their suggestion without even pondering the outcomes replying that their advice is basically fruitless. Later on, as Neil prepares for the upcoming play “A Mid-Summer Night’s Dream” in which he plays the lead character “Puck”, Mr. Perry finds out about him being in the play and orders him to resign his role. Neil, although heartbroken by the lack of support by his own father, does the play and is heavily applauded for his performance at the end. However, Mr. Perry shows up to the play most likely to make sure his son followed his commands. Powerfully angered by the disobedience of his son, Mr. Perry storms out of the theater painfully gripping Neil’s arm dragging him past Mr. Keating and his friends into his

...Play and creative arts are important aspects of children’s learning that are being used in kindergartens. This action research project explores the using of play and creative arts in a kindergarten classroom. The purpose of this study is to evaluate and analyze how play and creative arts activities enhance and support children’s learning in literacy and numeracy lessons. Qualitative methods were used to gain data that reflect on the implementation of play and creative arts strategies and activities in teaching and the interpretation collected from participants. The three types of tools that used to collect data are observations, interviews and a reflective journal to ensure validity of results. After analyzing the data, two interrelated themes emerged. The first theme highlights the benefits of play and creative arts in early childhood. The second theme shows the benefits of using them can support literacy and numeracy development. Consequently play and creative arts seems to promote development in children’s learning processes and they also offer the learners’ confidence in their learning. To conclude, this study shows that play and creative arts may have positive effect in improving the children’s overall performance and attitudes. ...the research problem. The prevalence of drop out varies between and within countries and occurs more frequently in certain age ranges and grades depending on the educational structure and patterns of participation in that country (Hunt, 2008). However, Teenagers’ dropping out of high school before completion has been a challenge for educators, parents, and employers for at least 30 years [Blue & Cook (2004); citing Haycock & Huang]. For many public school students’ particularly male students from low-income or ethnic minority families graduating from high school has remained problematic, even as the nation’s general educational level has increased [Blue & Cook (2004); citing Dillow]. According to 2000 current population survey (CPS) of the U.S. census bureau are used to compute dropout and completion rates by background characteristics, such as sex, race/ethnicity, and family income. Dropout rates in U.S are typical calculated in one of two ways: status rates and events rates. Status dropout rates indicate the number and percentage of people aged 15–24 who are not enrolled in school and have not obtained a high school credential. Event dropout rates, on the other hand, measure the number and percentage of students leaving school over a particular time period typically one year. Dropping out of school seems to be the result of a long-term process of disengaging from school [Blue & Cook (2004); citing Alexander & Entwisle, Finn, Hess]. Although research conducted...

But it is much more…People are presented as [Fadiman] saw them, in their humility and their frailty—and their nobility.” —Sherwin B. Eating Habit

...behaviour in adolescents F Johnson1, J Wardle1* and J Griffith1 1 ICRF Health Behaviour Unit, University College London, UK Objective: Amid concerns about the quality of young people’s diets, this paper describes the development of a measure of healthy eating behaviour for use with adolescents. Design: Items for the measure were selected from a larger pool on the basis of responses from a pilot study. The 23-item checklist was validated using measures of dietary fat and fibre intake, fruit and vegetable consumption, dietary restraint, nutrition knowledge and a measure of family income. Setting: Participants came from seven secondary schools in the north-west of England. Subjects: A total of 1822 adolescents aged between 13 and 16 y took part in the study, representing 84% of those invited to participate. Results: Correlations between measures indicate a good level of convergent validity, and the checklist is also shown to have high internal and test – retest reliability. Conclusions: The focus on choices available to adolescents means that the checklist will provide a useful addition to food frequency-type approaches to the measurement of adolescent eating behaviour. Sponsorship: This research was funded by the Medical Research Council and the Economic and Social Research Council’s Health Variations Programme. Feduni-General-Guide-to-Referencing-2014

...General guide to referencing 2014 edition From the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Quality) Many students find learning the unfamiliar nature of academic writing a challenging experience. The puzzling art of referencing is no exception, with its traditions and initially obscure formatting rules, referencing can seem to be an overwhelming and annoying requirement standing between you and submitting your assignment by the due date. This guide has been written especially for you, new and returning Federation University Australia (FedUni) students, to demystify referencing and provide numerous practical examples of when and how referencing should be used in your writing at FedUni. As you study, you’ll come to understand that referencing is just a set of rules that you need to follow to adequately acknowledge the work and thinking of others in your assignments. These rules are important because they allow your teachers to decide whether you’ve demonstrated that you understand the topic at hand and show that you have completed the assignment yourself. If you ignore the requirements to reference source materials in your assignment, your teacher may decide you have committed ‘plagiarism’. This means you have failed to reference according to the rules and in doing so, not demonstrated that you have used the work of others in your work. Plagiarism is a very serious matter that can result in unpleasant consequences for your studies and career. So please take the time to understand...

The Decline and Fall of Literature

...The Decline and Fall of Literature November 4, 1999 ANDREW DELBANCO E-mail Print [pic]Share [pic] [pic]In Plato’s Cave[pic] by Alvin Kernan A couple of years ago, in an article explaining how funds for faculty positions are allocated in American universities, the provost of the University of California at Berkeley offered some frank advice to department chairs, whose job partly consists of lobbying for a share of the budget. “On every campus,” she wrote, “there is one department whose name need only be mentioned to make people laugh; you don’t want that department to be yours.”1 The provost, Carol Christ (who retains her faculty position as a literature professor), does not name the offender—but everyone knows that if you want to locate the laughingstock on your local campus these days, your best bet is to stop by the English department. The laughter, moreover, is not confined to campuses. It has become a holiday ritual for The New York Times to run a derisory article in deadpan Times style about the annual convention of the Modern Language Association, where thousands of English professors assemble just before the new year. Lately it has become impossible to say with confidence whether such topics as “Eat Me; Captain Cook and the Ingestion of the Other” or “The Semiotics of Sinatra” are parodies of what goes on there or serious presentations by credentialed scholars.2 At one recent English lecture, the speaker discussed a pornographic “performance artist”...
