In recent years gun violence has escalated and has become an epidemic not only in our communities, but all over the world. Something has to be done to decrease the number of deaths and injuries that occurs from gun violence. For a number of years now Memphis, TN, the city where I live has been nationally known as a city that is plagued by violence ranking second to Washington D.C. when it comes to violent crimes committed by guns. Studies released by the FBI ranked Memphis as one of the top three most dangerous cities in America. This year according to statistics, Memphis ranked second to Detroit and has some of the most dangerous neighborhoods to live in. Almost every other day, you can turn on your television set and hear about someone getting shot in Memphis. Just last summery brother and I became a target of gun violence. Thank God I didn’t get hurt but, my brother wasn.t so lucky. My brother and I were sitting outside in the yard when a person walked up and opened fire on us. I wasn’t hurt, but my brother was shot seven times but survived his injuries. After looking at these studies and statistics, it is evident that guns themselves, are not the cause of violence in our communities but the criminals who decide to kill and injury others. ...Personally I have little experience with guns. The only person that I am close to and owns a gun is my Cousin. In high school I took a hunter education class and I learned the proper techniques to using specific weapons. Even though I've never been hunting I have a hunting license. He brings up an interesting issue in questioning if gun violence is a public health epidemic. He is suggesting that the government give money to federal science agencies, such as the CDC, to research how many people die from gun violence every year, and use the information found in that research to find the root of the problem and try to stop it. He recognizes that groups such as Cure Violence are actively trying to stop this violence in some communities but suggests that these organizations could benefit from facts about the subject found through scientific research. ...Critical Analysis Essay In reading “The Trouble with Geniuses Part 1 and 2”, Malcolm Gladwell has presented his purpose and a strong argument to the fact that talent can only lay the foundation for a person to succeed in life. The talent that is continuously discussed in this reading is a persons IQ, or Intelligence Quotient. A man named Christopher Langan is discussed throughout both chapters and is a clear example of a person with extreme IQ. Although Langan demonstrates a superior IQ, he never reached his true potential. Gladwell maintains that intelligence, even extreme intelligence, has a threshold. Having a high IQ is an advantage, but being smarter than others does not automatically make one more successful. “The relationship between success and IQ works only up to a point” (79). A person not only has to be smart enough but when you factor in opportunities that are taken full advantage of, that person’s success greatly increases. Gladwell further proves his point in these chapters when he explains a study done by Lewis Terman. Terman performed standardized IQ testing for geniuses and attempted to demonstrate that a person who showed a genius IQ rating would clearly determine the success of that individual.
