NutroBalance Project Case Study

(Section 1)

To Alex:

After inputting the information for the data for our team and what is needed to complete this project, I am estimating the starting date as Wed 2/15/2010 and a finish date of Fri 8/24/2012. This will be a total of 138 days. I will be identifying our critical tasks into grouping of four. These include:
(Group 1) -Identifying target consumers, recruit test subjects, screen test subjects, and finalize test subjects.
(Group 2) - Prepare product and prepare placebo
(Group 3) - Develop data analysis database and develop database using hypothetical test data
(Group 4)- Input actual data into database, analyze actual data, and prepare findings report.

(Section 2)
To Alex:

From taking critical paths into groups with the idea of consolidating thirteen paths into four has given us a closer knit team focusing on these tasks instead of attacking each task at a time. The reason behind this is to take the focal areas from the similarity of tasks. For example, group one is focusing primarily on the test subjects. Identify, recruit, screen, and finalize. The second group is focusing just on the product, such as preparing the actual product and placebo. Our third focus is on our data base, which is developing analysis and hypothetical test data. The final condensed section is our actual data, which taking our actual data and analyzing it and inputting it into our findings report.

(Section 2 Continued)

As you noted in your last email regarding after a month and a half of only at the point of finishing up the test screening of our subject, and that we are behind schedule and over budget. What we are doing to remedy this is to take our test subjects and align them with one of our four groups instead of having to go through all thirteen one after another. The idea behind this is to have each of our test subjects to meet with one of our four group team members to begin each process instead of waiting each day until the next step is ready for examination. We do realize that some of the tasks are unable to move to the next task until one is completed. What we have done to keep careful track of where each subject is at through the tasks is that they are given associated numbers in which they would meet with other subjects with the same number who are in the same step. What we have done with this is to move subjects in bulk numbers onto their new step. This will be a give and take process, where we are in the “give” mode. As the process moves on, we expect to be in the “take” mode once all of the subjects are tested because once all of our data is collected, we will be using an advanced program to analyze and interpret our findings with ease and time saved. We expect our finish date to be within a safe range.

(Section 3)
To Board of Directors:

As proven in the success of our NutroBalance weight loss and nutrition supplement mainly geared towards men, we feel that we are only targeting half of the healthy living community. Our goals of this project, is to supply then men and women who desire as healthier lifestyle through assisting their physical regimen by assisting with these supplements. What I want you as possible investors to take into accommodation is our brand recognition and already sturdy client-base before even going into this venture to incorporate the fifty percent of possible clients out there to come aboard with Ultramax. This fifty percent is women. It is well known that a majority of women are constantly conscious about their health and figure.

What we aim for is to provide these women an opportunity to join our successful club to begin on their track to wherever they would like to be physically and to improve their internal health. What we chose to do is to utilize our current clientele to target our new. First, we wanted to give the wives and spouses of the males already in our system the proper marketing through email and paper mail. Each of these households and email address provided a discount coupon to the male already associated with us to future product purchases. What his coupon has done, is our happy male customers has basically the marketing for us by recruiting their significant others. What this has done, is shorten our target and recruiting cost and time. Another way we did our marketing was to target major cities and the industries that involve women. A couple of our major targets were Los Angeles and New York due to the density of modeling and acting involved. Just as many women as there are men in these major cities, we were able to have the word of the new female supplement the talk of the town. Again, we utilized the power of word of mouth due to the nature of benefit that we offer. Again, cost and research time was able to be cut down. We actually were able to test and analyze more subjects than expected and were met with widely positive results. Another way that we are utilizing out already established name is to aid in the psychological manipulation. We found out that once these women know that we are a success with the male population, it kind of gives them a sense of trust over doubt. If we were a new company starting off, there would be a level of doubt of the new that will aid them towards less positive results. Once these subjects are beginning their testing weather a placebo or actual supplement, there was a small level of participants that gave positive results even though we were not given the actual product. We were all in all able to get dominantly good results and met our finish date. With our findings and results, we hope that you as the Board would like to come along with us to take this company to another level and take over the healthy living community. Thank you for your time.

But the real challenge facing project managers is how to interpret the data in MS Project and how to make it “useful” for you and your stakeholders. In this case study you will be given a scenario and asked to load the project information into Microsoft Project. However, the purpose of this case study is bigger than just properly loading the Microsoft Project file. This case study requires you to interpret the MS Project results and incorporate the issues and results in your communication with key stakeholders. Your output of this case study explores the “softer” side of project management, including how to communicate your results to your key stakeholders in a clear and concise manner. The point of the case study is to show you that projects experience change over time, which forces you, the project manager, to modify and adapt your project. This case study is broken into three sections, Sections 1, 2, and 3. In each section you will be given some information on your project and then asked to “respond” to some of your stakeholders. Even though there are three sections in the case study, you will only submit ONE document, due Week 6. This document will include your answers...

...Memo To: From: CC: Date: Re: Part I Team Paper Industry Background Cosmetics have been around almost since the beginning of time. In 4000 BC the Egyptians applied bright green paste made from copper minerals to their face to provide color and definition. They also painted on eyebrows with cream that came from sheep’s fat, lead and soot. Fast forward to the present time. In the 1970’s “certain ingredients were banned from use in cosmetics to protect endangered species, and other species currently used as “lab rats” by some cosmetics manufacturers.” (Cosmetic Discounter, 2004) The sale of cosmetics within the US market has increased from 3.34 billion dollars in 2000 to 5.35 billion dollars in 2005. Some studies also estimate that this market will increase to reach 8 billion dollars in 2010 and further to 11.85 billion dollars in 2015 and what is really driving growth is innovation. This means that products are being formulated with increasing amounts of highly developed active ingredients, such as anti-wrinkle and firming agents. The contra of this innovation is focused on the environmental issues: The unfortunate practice of many cosmetic companies trialing their products on animals in horrible ways, some contents like dibutyl phthalate, or DBP, a chemical linked to cancer in animals and other chemicals commonly found in cosmetics include acrylamide, formaldehyde and ethylene oxide - all listed by EPA as carcinogens. L’Oreal is the global leader in cosmetics...

Ultramax

...PM587 – Assignment: Case Study – Section 3 Executive Summary Report UltraMAX pill is the new NutroBalance’s weight-loss drug study project investment, approved by NutroBalance board of directors. UltraMAX is a weight loss supplement intended for women who lift weights and do cardiovascular exercises. The decision was based on the successful results NutroBalance experienced two years ago with the Ultra pill, which is also a weight loss supplement but intended for men. The board of directors originally approved the project to start on February 22, 2010 and expected it to complete by September 1, 2010 and under a budget of $41,880.00 with an expected duration of 138 days. To date, the project manager and its team had a few challenges to overcome. The first challenge was to rearrange the original schedule in order to fix resource constraints over the last two weeks of April. The team was able to level the resources and still expect the project to complete on the original schedule date and under the same budget; however, after a month and a half into the project, it has been discovered that the project is behind schedule due to a delay on the third task “Screen Test Subjects” assigned to Sarah who had an unexpected emergency and was out for a few days. Screening the Test Subjects was originally expected to take no longer than 20 days but instead was completed in a period of 30. Such delay caused the project three resource constraints on Sarah’s schedule and an increase on...

...NutroBalance has decided to expand its success with the formulation of the Ultra pills that were targeted towards men who lift weights and do cardiovascular exercises in the work-out population, to women who share the same passions. The new product will be called UltraMax. Project UltraMax has been divided into three sections: identification of target consumers, product testing, and result analysis; where twelve main tasks will be delivered in order to accomplish our mission. We started the project with a baseline cost of $42,080, but now we are at $45, 680 which puts us ($3,600) over budget. We also anticipated the project ending on 7/11/12, but now our schedule has an estimated finish date of 7/24/12. It took 30 days to screen the test subjects; our baseline estimation for this task was 20 days. Consequently, this put us over budget and behind schedule. Therefore, we plan to measure risks and constraints for upcoming tasks. We have attached the following reports for your review/records: • Critical Tasks • Over Allocated Resources • Over Budget Tasks • Resource Usage Solution After the test subjects have been finalized the next task will be to prepare the product. This is a critical task that has been assigned to an over-allocated resource. This is a constraint that will lead to other risks in the scheduling, and since we are already behind schedule, we will base our remaining duration estimates on a worse-case scenario using the Program Evaluation...
