Ogallala Aquifer is the second largest in the world with 174,000 square miles stretching over 8 states and is the main water source for America. The Keystone XL projected path will cross through the Ogallala Aquifer. If there were to be a spill it would cause contamination and depletion in large scale.
There were 18,558 Pipeline Ruptures in 10 years in the US. If the Keystone XL Pipeline leaks into the aquifer, 81% of drinking water intake will become unusable, crops will be ruined through irrigation system, $20million worth of food and fiber will disappear from the world market and any decrease in food, crop, fiber, or livestock production will affect global market and trade.
Well, there are a few questions that need to be addressed. Are the

Water Supply Issues

...The American West has a major issue on their hands, an issue that directly affects tens of millions of people and a vast area of land. Indirectly, this issue could affect the entire world. The amount of fresh water is limited, and there is conflict over the allocation of this necessary resource. People need an adequate supply of freshwater with good quality, affordable prices and consistent reliability. The survival of human life is contingent on the availability of water. There is no guarantee that water will always be there, and this is becoming more and more evident as population increases and the supply decreases. Two major means for freshwater in the western United States are the Colorado River and the Ogallala Aquifer. These bodies of freshwater have had a vast history of disputes over how they should be allocated, maintained and treated. Up until now, there have been no agreements that have satisfied everyone. The allocation of fresh water resources in western America needs to be secured because if the status quo is maintained, the consequences will be enormous to humans and the environment, as well as the economy, whom are all dependent upon freshwater for survival. The Colorado River has had a long history of water allocation controversies. It is a major river that runs through seven states including Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, New Mexico, Arizona, California and Nevada. It then continues into Mexico and empties into the Gulf of California. This river is 1,450 miles long...

The Process of Water Sustainability

...The Process of Water Sustainability Looking down on this planet from an outsiders perspective, it would be appear that Earth is composed mostly of land. However through years of research scientists have discovered that Earth is actually primarily made up of water. Approximately seventy one percent of the surface is covered by water, with only three percent of this being fresh water. This small percentage is primarily seen on the surface in snow banks and ice caps. While water has primarily been viewed as a definitive renewable resource for much of human history this new understanding that roughly one percent of the total water on all of planet Earth is both accessible and fresh usable water. One would think that because water is such a vital resource that almost all of the life on Earth depends on; more people would be aware of how it is used and recognize there is not an unlimited supply. However, like other natural resources, it is becoming a precious commodity that is being abused and over used. Thomas Fuller once pointed out, "we never know the worth of water till the well is dry," perfectly describing the current water crisis. With the rapid growth of populations combined with the nonchalant mindsets of many individuals, an even greater problem is stemming from the distribution of water amongst the planets ever expanding populations. If the problems from harmful pollutants, limited education and general misuse of the global water system continues to be neglected and overlooked...

Keystone Xl

...The highly controversial, and much disputed issues surrounding the Keystone XL crude oil pipeline project have been under the scrutiny of American politics in recent months. A debate has ensued around national calls for the construction of infrastructure that would transport a crude oil alternative from Canada to the United States, and has rapidly gained increased exposure. This exposure can be attributed to a number of factors, but in large part rising gasoline prices and political pressures are the driving factors. Increased demand for more reliable and stable supplies of crude oil in the United States has been driven by an ailing supply of traditional heavy oil. TransCanada Corporation is a Canadian based energy company which develops and operates energy infrastructure throughout North America. The corporation finds itself at the focal point of the oil sands debate. The transnational corporation has applied for a permit to carry out a $7 billion project by the name of Keystone XL, which would allow TransCanada to construct and manage an oil transport pipeline between the United States-Canada border. The pipeline would transport crude oil produced from oil sands in Canada to oil refineries in the Texas Gulf Coast. Since the pipeline would cross international borders, the project requires the approval of the State Department in accord with Executive Order 13337. It is over this crucial point that much of the discussion has been centered. Time Magazine has dubbed oil sands “Canada’s...
