The Puyallup tribe was known as the spuyaləpabš which means generous and welcoming behavior to all people. The people of this tribe have been around for thousands of years by living off the land. Each tribe is unique in the way they live and what they practice. Traditions and culture may be alike in some native american tribes but they all have their differences. The Puyallup tribe stood out the most to me because of their many different and fascinating traditions. They have become a well known tribe with ties to washington and with their history they have managed to create a lot in their vast amount of time in washington.

The Puyallup tribe people were fishers, gatherers, and hunters the Puyallup tribes found food a lot of there food in the Puget Sound and in the many rivers flowing into it. There was a wide variety of fish and shellfish. Salmon was the main food and an important part of veneration in Puyallup ceremonies. The result was the Treaty of Medicine Creek, by which the tribes gave away most of their territories, but reserved certain lands and rights including fishing rights.The Puyallup reservation was established by the treaty and originally was only included 1,280 acres but on January 20, 1856 the reservation was enlarged to 18,062 acres. Article 10 of the treaty provided for a physician to address the health needs of the Puyallup tribe.To encourage farming, Congress authorized the division of reservation land among individual Indians with the exception of a tribal cemetery; much of the land is now in the city of Tacoma.
