Rhetorical Analysis Of Haley's Speech

In the spring of 2017, the United States of America was approaching its presidential term for the United Nations Security Council. The United Nations, or the UN, was established in 1945 with the sole purpose of congregating dominant countries and national powerhouses in a diplomatic platform where they could discuss foreign policies and interrelations. Upon the United States’ forthcoming presidential status for this council, Ambassador Nikki Haley entices the audience in her speech outlining the US’ plans on handling foreign relations and human-rights violations. Even when telling humorous, nostalgic family anecdotes about her elderly parents failing to use the Uber app correctly, “so, [they] had to pick them up a couple of times” (Haley) she refrains from moving practically anything but her eyes and mouth. Likewise, she brags on her kids saying that one “is a freshman at Clemson” (Haley) and the other “is now a city boy, which makes [that] mom very nervous” (Haley), without as much as a wave of a hand. This behavior, or lack thereof, is seen through to the very end of Haley’s speech. Generally, people tend not to remain still when discussing such matters, especially family ones. But this was no accident, for Haley eschews even the simplest of body movements in order to safeguard herself from straying to domineering hand and body movements that could pull the audience’s emotional state. Today, a majority of politicians and even civilians in their everyday lives and careers use hand motions to get their points across, however, Haley executes the exact opposite and still succeeds to establish an effective speech for the US which is what makes her speech so interesting and so
