Bustamante’s article focuses on the development of Rio Salado’s online program as a way of keeping people that would benefit from the college experience from falling through the cracks. He uses his article to emphasize the diverse group of people that online education helps. Everyone from working adults, people in the military, incarcerated re-entry students, people in work-force training, and people that are enrolled in traditional classes. His purpose is to connect the largest number of people possible to the success of the Rio Salado online program so that they can identify with, and support his argument that online learning is making education better for everyone. He, also, suggests that we must reimagine the way we do business pertaining to education in America. His suggestions assume that there is something distinctly wrong with the traditional classroom education in our country. By not providing his readers with a strong counterargument other than popular opinion, he fails to support his premise as anything more than his own thoughts on the matter. Bustamante’s article advocates the online program at Rio Salado College and comes across to readers as an advertisement persuading people to enroll there. In an article that was republished in the student text, Practical Argument, writer David Smith offers his opposition to the argument that online learning is the solution to reimagining education in our country. Smith aims to make it clear to his audience that he believes that there will never be an adequate online substitution to the traditional classroom.
