Say hello to Windows Blue
-J.A. de Torres

“More beautiful, more flexible, more you. And very, very fast.” This is how Microsoft describes Windows 8, the descendant to Microsoft 7. It was officially made available to the market on 26 October 2012 alongside with Microsoft Surface tablet.
Fundamentally, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 (starter and/or ultimate) are the same with Windows 95 even though developments are being made over the years and it takes a little effort to switch between any of these versions. But then, with Windows 8, a thorough change has been made. Designed for both tablet and personal computers, it comes with features match for the new age.
Windows 8, also known by its codename Windows Blue, has replaced the good old feature Start Button with Start Screen prompted by clicking the bottom-left corner of the screen or by hitting the windows key on the keyboard. With this Start Screen, it is easier, fast, and more fluid to switch between your apps and organize your files. The term use for this new look Modern UI (User Interface) made especially for touch screens but can also be used with mouse and keyboard. You can see full list of Start Menu replacements for Windows 8 at www.microsoft.com . The desktop is still there but then again comes improved with new kind of task bar and restructured file management. When it comes to security, there’s the better version of Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, and Windows Update— more secure and up to date. In fact, according to CNET report, Windows 8 so far is reasonably virus proof even without third party suite like our usual anti-virus and/or anti-malware software.
Lots of reviews have been made for this Microsoft Windows innovation and it has been rated 4/5 on the average. Whether you like it or not, we cannot eradicate the fact that this is such a game-changing operating system Microsoft has released. #

...but Ginny told her it didn’t show. It will begin to show one of these days, the salesgirl said. Ginny modeled a green velvet jumpsuit with a brass zipper and oversized buckles, and an Italian knit dress with bunchy sleeves in a zigzag pattern of beige, brown, and cream, and a ruffled organdy “tea dress” in pale orange, and a navy-blue blazer made of Irish linen, with a pleated white linen skirt and a pale blue silk blouse. Assuming she could only have one costume, which seemed to be the case, she would have preferred the jumpsuit, not just because it was the most expensive outfit (the price tag read $475) but because the green velvet reflected in her eyes. Oliver decided on the Irish linen blazer and the skirt and blouse, however, and told the salesclerk to remove the tags and to pack up Ginny’s own clothes, since she intended to wear the new outfit. Strolling uptown, he told her that with her hair down like that, and her bangs combed low on her forehead, she looked like a “convent schoolgirl.” In theory, that was. Tangentially. It was a balmy, windy day in early April. Everyone was out. Ginny kept seeing people she almost knew, Oliver waved hello...

...good days or only a mediocre day. Judging by Oliver’s expression she looked all right, but it was difficult to tell. The salesclerks saw too many beautiful young women to be impressed, though one told Ginny she envied her her hair - not just that shade of chestnut red but the thickness too. In the changing room she told Ginny that her own hair was “coming out in handfuls” but Ginny told her it didn’t show. It will begin to show one of these days, the salesgirl said. You seem very tired and lonely.” I did feel tired, lonely… and hungry. “My name’s Peter… and yes I feel very lonely and hungry.” “Don’t mind coming down to the coffeeshop, do you?” “I can serve you a nice meal if you’d like,” Matilda asked kindly. “Okay, thank you,” I told her as I got up from the bench and dusted my clothes off. Matilda smiled, “This way.” We walked past the flock of chickens, which were going haywire! Feathers flying everywhere, I...

...take things down to a lower level, using a more traditional programming language known as C. But along the way, realizing that the same ideas we talked about last Friday will recur not only in this language C, but in most every other that we look at this semester. So we called this thing here what last time? This is representative of a statement. So we called this a statement. And it does something. It's an instruction that a computer or Scratch might execute. And henceforth, let's also start calling something like this a function, for reasons we shall soon see. Meanwhile, we saw things like this. And these are generally known as what construct? AUDIENCE: Loop. DAVID J. MALAN: So a loop. So pretty straightforward. It literally does what it says. And in Scratch, if you want to cram more puzzle pieces in there, the piece will grow to fit it. And we'll see in C that we can do the same thing. Another type of loop, though, in Scratch might be forever, or there's any number of other approaches. But let's take a more generalist look, with a face that's likely quite familiar, at loops more generally. MARK ZUCKERBERG: One thing that computers are really good at is repeating commands. As a person, you'd get really bored if you had to do the same thing lots of times in a row. But a computer can do the same thing millions or even billions of times, and not get bored, and be able to carry that out really well. So for example, if I wanted to wish everyone on Facebook a happy birthday by sending...

Charles Friedley's Informative Essay: Jury Duty

...“What he means to say is… Are you Christian?” We, all shocked by such an obvious question, almost all stood up. Almost. As luck would have it, the one person in this room that wasn’t an honest, God-fearing christian was me. All of those faces, standing higher than mine, looking down on me in pity. It was kind of the worst-kept secret in town that I was on the fence about the whole religion thing. It wasn’t obvious that people hated my guts because of it, but you could see it in their upturned noses. Their elbows and knees on the street as I passed them by. Then, the judge tells some of them to sit, and about four or five to leave, and all of a sudden, there are only 12 of us left. Then, the lawyer walked up to us and whistled a single, descending note, and looked at us. “You sure picked the wrong case to show up to. Welcome to The State of Tennessee v. John Thomas Scopes.” Bong-bing bing bong. My doorbell. It could be the mail. It could always be the mail. At 10:30 P.M. Right. As I opened the door, I inwardly groaned. A sharply dressed 20-year-old looked at me from the other side of my doorframe. “Hello, sir. Can I interest you in our lord and savior, Jesus Christ?” He smiled a smile so beaming, it rivaled the sun. Charles was not impressed. “You're the third one today. So far, I’ve had thirteen offers for my vote on the jury. Four have been money, Two have been threats, and the rest were for redemption. Last week, somebody threw a brick in the window of my house.” Charles...

...was still a secret; it had to be kept hidden from the outside world. She couldn't say no for it wasn't in her control and the saddest part is that she accepted what was given to her. It was like the need for oxygen, the yearning for food, and the vitality of water. She spent most of the time not there, waiting for the night to pass so she, as well as her heart, would survive one more day. She would get up from the bed and always, like a never ending, taunting, haunting routine, she would stare out the window. The warmth of the sun on her face would force her eyes open - not just to the trees that blocked out the road, but to the experience of the quiet suffering she endured. She would always be naked when she woke up, bare and cold. It was the rays of light that the morning gave that washed her thoroughly, gently and she would give herself willingly, effortlessly. The shape of her body would always smooth out the imperfections that took years to drag her down. They were covered, all those parts, so she could maintain the radiance of the clothes she'd wear and the elegance of her words. But before she began the task of being reasonable and strong, she would let the gold seep into her skin. She would let it explore her with the passion of its heat. For moments, minutes or, rarely, even hours, she would be entranced by the beautiful blue that was the sky, standing still in front of the window. No one came around to visit, to come and care for her, no one to talk to, so she...

Patrol Essay

...3/12/2016 PATROL Hello my name. and this is how I feel about racial tension in the city of St, Louis. I think St Louis City is one of the most racially divided cities in the country. I say that from experience of living here for over 20 years. In my time living here I’ve experienced racism firsthand. Walking downtown approaching a white person I have saw them cross the street and walk on the other side simply because I’m black. I have went to restaurants and been discriminated against just because of my skin color. I have applied for jobs and been turned down and saw lesser applicants of another color be picked over me. Me personally I’m not a racist or anything close to it. I enjoy spending time with other cultures and races. Its like this city is stuck in a time warp from the 1800’s. Just last week a thriving bar in the Soulard neighborhood was shut down simply because most of their patrons were black in color. I have been to bars in the downtown area and told that my boots were the wrong type of boots or my shorts were too long or my t-shirt was white and looked through the window and see white people that are in the same is exact outfit that I have on but they were let in and I was not. The only difference that I could observe between me and the other guests were I was black and they were white. I have worked at bars and have been told by management to not let large groups of blacks in but a party bus with thirty whites on it would pull up and they will...

Single on Valentine's Day

...Valentine's Day, I waited in line with hordes of other teenagers just for a chance to get into the store. I remember wishing two things. One: That I wasn't the only person there with her mother. Two: That the cute boy whom I could see through the store window was skimming through the aisles picking out a gift for me. It was such a scene — the hundreds of greeting cards with messages of love and romance, guys in their school uniforms looking uncomfortable as they tried to pick the perfect stuffed animal for their girlfriends, many of whom were beside them giving them not-so-subtle hints. I wanted so desperately to be a part of this. Unfortunately, Valentine's Day passed and I received nothing but a lecture from my father on how Western capitalism was ruining our culture. The next Valentine's Day, I still didn't have a boyfriend, but I did receive a greeting card from a secret admirer. It would have been flattering, except the card featured a picture of an office desk with neatly arranged paper clips and pens. I can't remember what it said inside the card, but it hardly mattered. While other women inspire candlelit dinners and marriage proposals, some guy felt the need to tell me that I was as exciting as office supplies. Not to say that all my Valentine's Days have been dull. I had a particularly memorable one the year I was dating, long-distance, a guy who lived in England. I had been waiting all day for him to surprise me. I had thought up several scenarios, from him flying in...
