The Effects of Sleep on Exercise When it comes to good health, many physicians recommend eating healthy, getting adequate exercise and a sufficient amount of sleep. With each person, the recipe for all three varies. Eating a certain amount of calories for a person’s body type and consuming a variety of foods defines eating healthy. Exercise helps to moderate a person’s weight and helps prevent certain diseases and illnesses. However, according to USA today less than 79 percent of Americans exercise the recommended amount of thirty minutes, five days a week (Hellmich, 2013). Sleep also benefits in maintaining the immune system. According to William Dement (1999, p. 269), studies have shown that lack of sleep is correlated with lower levels of cells that help to fight of disease and illnesses.
Along with fighting disease, sleep and exercise have other benefits that work with each other. Adequate and high quality sleep aids in daytime functioning, making an individual feel more energetic during the day. Restless sleep, along with an insufficient amount of sleep can cause a person to feel lethargic and unmotivated. Exercise and sleep is a catch twenty-two. Exercise …show more content…
While many studies have shown that exercise improves sleep, it is important to investigate this further and find the correlation between improved sleep and exercise with different age groups. The correlation between exercise, better sleep and young adults brings diverse results. A study conducted by Wong, Halaki & Chow (2010), disproved the claim that adding exercise can improve the length and quality of sleep in inactive young adults. However, they found that sleep increases the amount of light sleep, which they suspect might be related to stress caused by sudden exercise (Wong et al, 2010).
