...Holly D Brunk MGM316-1202B-03 Individual Project Phase 4 June 18, 2012 Intercultural Change Rio de Janeiro In Brazil, there are many cultural differences than in America where the corporate headquarters of the construction firm is. The Brazilians are fun loving people no matter what part of the country you visit. In Rio de Janeiro, were the Skyscraper is to be located, it is particularly true. To this culture, life is a party. In greeting it is common to receive a hand shake and a kiss on the cheek. An important part of this is that a woman shaking a man’s hand – she offers her hand first, in no way is the man to offer a hand shake to the woman. The primary language of the land is Portuguese, although some regions of the country also speak Spanish. Portuguese is one of the most difficult languages in the world, it is important to have a translator present when in that country. A translator form Brazil is preferred but not mandated. Greetings in Brazil are informal and meetings there are also. Personal meetings are a must when doing business with Brazil as the people do not like to do business only in an electronic nature. That is not to say once the meet and great is done, they will not maintain the future communications that way. Major decisions however, need to be done in a face to face meeting. That country gives a peaceful and pleasant experience with no racism as it is greatly integrated with centuries of culture. This may be why the corporation has chosen to build the...

Racial Democracy

...The myths of “racial democracy,” the “the melting pot,” and “salad bowl” theories. The myths of “racial democracy,” the “melting pot,” and “Salad bowl” theories This paper will examine the theories of the “melting pot” and “salad bowl” and also look at “racial democracy” in Brazil. Secondly, this paper will look at cultural assimilation using these theories. Finally it will look at the myths of these theories and how they have affected the American and world societies. Have Americans really reached either the “melting pot” or “salad bowl” theories of cultural assimilation? Is Brazil really a “racial democracy” or is this also a myth and how does this differ with America? The United States of America is one of the most culturally diverse nations on earth. In 2009, Michael C. Lemay states, “the United States of America is arguably the most ethnically and racially diverse nation on earth”. Who is an American, I am using the term Americans to be defined as individuals who were native born, naturalized citizens, and individuals who consider themselves Americans from the United States of America. Generally speaking most Americans grow up, in ethnically homogeneous communities (Putnam, 2007) vice the differing theories of “melting pot” or “salad bowl.” While Americans live and work in communities that are ethnically and culturally diverse the issues of intolerance and prejudice against various ethnic and racial backgrounds has been a plague throughout...

Environmental Global Governance

...GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL REGIME DESCRIPTION The following paper is going to investigate, analyze and evaluate the Global Environmental Regime, topic that is included within the discipline of Global Governance. Najam, Papa and Taiyab (2006, p. 3) define the global environmental regime as “the sum of organizations, policy instruments, financing mechanism, rules, procedures and norms that regulate the processes of global environmental protection”. Nowadays, it has increased the importance of this sector in global governance, in which different actors are involved. Biermann (2004) states that global environmental regime is characterised as a multi-actor governance system where the non-state organisations have a large influence. Biermann (2004) highlights some actors such as nongovernmental lobbying as activist groups, business associations and policy research institutes; networks of scientist; the influence of mayor companies; intergovernmental organizations; and supra-national institutions (OCDE). EVALUATION Global environmental regime is an immature regime. In this section it is going to be analysed the main global governance gaps and what is their weaknesses. According to Fauchald (2010) the weaknesses of the regime are: 1. Environmental indicators still deteriorating despite the efforts of different actors. 2. Lack of coordination among the Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs). It is a problem the lack of common tools and the developing of a common strategy...

Global Warming

...greenhouse gases generated by human activities cause global warming. Their concentration in the atmosphere keeps increasing since the beginning of the industrial era. If today, the state of scientific knowledge and models used by climatologists cannot make fine predictions at the regional level, they predict the overall global large developments that need expect. However, predictions regarding human and environmental consequences are alarmist: disturbance of Gulf Stream, wildfires, ice caps thaw, disappearance of plant and animal species, decrease of water resources, increased flood risk, droughts, forced migration of population, resurgence of diseases…the reality of the risk and the phenomenon is now almost a consensus. The economic, political, social, environmental, even moral stakes, being major, they arouse numerous debates, on an international scale, as well as controversies. Governments, businesses and individuals, through knowledge of trends, can make decisions and strategic policies most relevant to limit the impacts of climate change. The IPCC reports are the main base of information and discussions and the Kyoto Protocol provides mechanisms (carbon market, clean development, joint implementation) to reduce gases emissions, this one not making the unanimity in different...

I noticed very quickly that our abrasive American ways of communicating was not effective by listening in on conference calls with the three of us. I noticed as well that there was a seemingly deep sense that creating a more relation type of Management/Vendor management style was would make for a clearer and cleaner method than the alternative. I learned in haste that my report Jurandir at Pontonet began to surpass expectations quickly in comparison to other vendors in a surprisingly quick time frame. This paper shall also attempt to analyze the business and social culture of Brazil from an American point of view. In addition my purpose is to help achieve the most success when participating in a leadership activity with Pontonet. By having a better grasp of the cultural norms I believe that it will greater help me to have an advantage as a leader for this 3rd party management role I have accepted as part of my responsibilities. It is my understanding through research that Brazil’s business culture is much more stringent than the United States. In this paper it will be my intent to provide analysis and review the current business culture and relations that take place between the U.S. and Brazil. ...Movimento Democratico Brasileiro (PMDB) had offered Dell. Rio Grande do Sul was one of the most prosperous states in Brazil with standard of living quite high. But suddenly political climate in Rio Grande do Sul changed all together. Olivio Dutra of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT, or Workers’ Party) was appointed as new governor of Rio Grande do Sul and he appeared likely to rescind all the agreements made by the previous government with Dell. He considered all the agreements to be overly generous incentives offered to transnational corporations by the previous government. This was a setback for Dell Computer Corporation and Keith Maxwell had to decide amongst the three options. The second option available to Dell Computer Corporation is to move its plant to another state in Brazil. After numerous discussions on site selection Rio Grande do Sul, had been selected as site for plant location. Determined to win high technology investment in the state Antonio Britto of Partido do Movimento Democratico Brasileiro offered best investment alternatives to Dell. But appointment of Olivio Dutra as new governor of Rio Grande do Sul foiled all the plans.Olivio Dutra was against governments granting of incentives to foreign transnational corporations. This is one of his objections against Antonio Britto’s government in his campaign for the post of governor. So the first thing he was supposed to do when he became the governor of Rio Grande do Sul was to rescind all benefits given to transnational...

Inequality

...elite more often than not have allowed inequality to persist. Many different policies and factors result in these inequalities, so it can be difficult to narrow down which have the greatest impact, but by examining the history of different programs meant to reduce or perpetuate inequalities, it is clear that the issue of inequalities is one of policy rather than a natural state. According to de Barros, “The inequality caused by unequal opportunities is viewed by most people as fundamentally unfair” (de Barros, 27). This suggests the difference between inequality of opportunity and inequality of outcome. If there seems to be a positive correlation between these two forms of inequality, then we can claim there is something unfair about the system inherently. Furthermore, “some inequality may be tolerated, like inequality caused by differences in effort and talent, particularly when attempts to reduce it could interfere with other ethical objectives, such as privacy and individual freedom. Equality of opportunity is desirable, equality of outcomes (earnings, income, wealth) not necessarily” (de Barros, 27). For example, if a child who, because of chance and circumstance, grows up in a poor family and lacks access to a decent education as a result and is subsequently restricted from certain jobs or opportunities because of his or her education level, this becomes a failure of the system to function in the way it was intended. Public education is perhaps the most important service...

City of God

...begins with the protagonist literally in the middle of a gang war and reviewing the life events that brought his story to this point in a series of flashbacks. In the first images, a knife is rhythmically sharpened in a tempo that matches several quick, fixed cuts to and from the chicken’s point-of view. The knife accentuates the cuts in editing as the knife sounds rise in tempo, intensity and volume. Several of these juxtaposed shots create heightened meaning and awareness for the viewer and seemingly the chicken. The chicken appears increasingly more anxious as the editor creates a Kuleshovian continuity. Each successive chicken shot is blended with the rhythm of a frantic samba playing while people are dancing, cutting carrots, killing and de-feathering fated chickens for a stew that symbolizes the mise-en-scene. The opening scene is a subtext of the film itself: the knife will cut the film with precision, in a clangor of violence and tense editing . This mélange plays out until the chicken escapes and a chase ensues, but not before a close-up of a plateful of blood fills the frame and the music simultaneously stops. The blood has multiple meanings, including a reference to its importance to the meal that...

Brazilian Style of Negotiation

...behavior during the international trading process and how to generally deal with them as the other party in negotiations. 1. INTRODUCTION In this era of globalization, there is an inordinate necessity to comprehend how culture effects negotiations among parties in diverse areas of the world. Culture deeply influences how people communicate, think and behave. Prosperous cross-cultural negotiations require a perception of the negotiation style of those involved in the process, and the approval and respect of their cultural dogmas and rules. As mentioned, it is unquestionable that culture profoundly influences how people think, communicate and behave (Faure, 1999), thus guiding the type of transactions made and how they are traded. Cultural differences between the negotiators can create barriers that prevent or hinder the development of negotiations. Therefore, knowledge, acceptance and respect for the culture of the parties are essential to ensure the success of a negotiation and to avoid possible misapprehensions. Hence, to analyze and note the style adopted by the negotiators of a given culture is a challenging and exigent mission.
