According to a study by Pew Research Internet Project, “Some 73% of online adults now use a social networking site of some kind. Facebook is the dominant social networking platform in the number of users, but a striking number of users are now diversifying onto other platforms. Some 42% of online adults now use multiple social networking sites”.(Social Media Update 2013) Even though social media is believed to have a negative effect on our culture, it has many positive benefits as well.
How social media is changing healthcare, Healthcare facilities and providers have started to move in the direction of social media, they are coordinating these tools with their marketing and patient commitment. Healthcare facilities and health care providers that include physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and physical therapists, have a plethora of options when it comes to developing a presence online. They have the option of starting a blog or joining networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace. There are also online communities that are solely for the use of healthcare providers. Social media allows patients to interact with physicians and healthcare workers; it makes it possible for patients to be more informed when it applies to their healthcare procedures. Healthcare companies can take advantage of social media by creating surveys and blogs where patients can share their opinions and experiences
Patients are taking a more active role in their healthcare; they want more transparency in regards to their health. A few of the ways that social media benefits the health care industry are patient education and outreach, patients more involved in their care process, feedback, patient interaction, and building your health care organizations reputation. Healthcare providers can educate patients by blogging information about seasonal sicknesses, ways to stay healthy, and other important health information. This is a great way to connect to patients and network with potential new ones. Providers can also use Twitter as a real time messaging system, it is a perfect medium for circulating information with their community. Patients are becoming increasingly more informed with the aid of social media. It enables patients to share information in regards to their medical conditions with other people who have the same or similar conditions, they can compare and different diagnoses and treatments. Patients can learn from each other, compare how different medications, treatments, and drugs might or might not be working. The sharing of information develops a more informed patient in regards to their healthcare procedures. Facebook and Twitter have also become forums for people to be heard, the facility can identify patient issues and determine how to solve their problems with their care or service. For example, they can ask questions and get answers or advice rapidly. This will reduce a patient scheduling an appointment just to ask a question or wait on the phone for an answer. Potential patients that use social media to look up a facility are able to look online to see what other people are saying about your healthcare facility and staff. Providers can take control of their online reputation, both negative and positive with social media. By responding to both negative and positive concerns, it shows patients the commitment that your facility or practice has to its patients.
Now that you know how social media is changing healthcare, I will discuss the negative effect social media has on cyber bullying. First I will start by defining cyber bullying, according to stopbullying.gov, it is "bullying that takes place using electronic technology, it includes devices and equipment such as cell phones, computers, and tablets as well as communication tools including social media sites, text messages, chat, and websites". Cyber bullying is different because it can occur 24 hours a day and for seven days a week, if a person is bullied through social media, it is hard to delete messages once they have been made public, this can add to feeling of helplessness that a person feels when bullied. According to consumer reports, "one million children were harassed, threatened or subjected to other forms of cyber bullying on Facebook in 2011". Cyber bullying poses the biggest risk to teens, dosomething.org reports that "81% of young people think bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person. Secondly, I will illustrate the effects that cyber bullying can have on a teen. “Kids that are bullied are likely to experience anxiety, depression, loneliness, unhappiness, and poor sleep,” explains Jennifer N. Caudle, DO, an AOA board-certified family physician in Philadelphia. What is not being noticed is that bullied teens often do not notify anyone, due to the fear of embarrassment, more ridicule, and low self esteem. Often what happens is that a victim of cyber bullying can start to feel the negative effect it is having on them, it can start to affect their performance at school and their social skills.
Now that you know some of the good and bad of social media, I will discuss the security risk that it poses. Social media plays an important part in our lives today, social networks like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, are high security threats. According to the Pew Research internet project, as of september 2013 71% of online adults use Facebook, 18% use Twitter, and 17% use Instagram. The cisco 2013 annual security report shows that, mass audience sites such as social media sites, pose the highest security threats, the report illustrates that online advertisements are 182 times more likely to deliver malicious content. Social media allows you to stay in touch with family and friends, but it is also another tool that can aid a criminal to target their prey. For example, Facebook, Twitter, and Intagram have a feature that allows a person to "check in" or post the location that they are at, for most people this has become an innocent routine. But for criminals, it is a source that they can use to know when a person is away from their home and how long they will be away. I recently read a story about a man and a woman from Louisville, Kentucky that wanted to celebrate because they had finished a 10k; they update their Facebook status with "Heading to the hill with Kurt. to see Fire department", little did they know that they were alerting criminals of their whereabouts for the evening. When the couple returned home they realized that they had been robbed, they were in the process of selling their home and had installed surveillance cameras for prospective buyers, they were able to catch the three burglars on camera, and one of the men had befriended the woman through Facebook and was able to view her updates. Social media sites can be a target for criminals, giving them access to vital information that you never thought would become a security risk.
As we have learned from the information that has been presented to us in the social media world, there are many options to choose from, such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Linked. We have investigated the basis that social media is believed to have a negative effect on our culture; even though we have described that it has many positive benefits as well. In healthcare social media is changing the way that a patient and a doctor communicate, it is allowing the patient to give the healthcare physician the most up to date information as it relates to symptoms that they are experiencing. Health care providers are also exploring new ways to communicate with their patients though social media, they are spreading awareness regarding diseases, and allowing their patients to have real time answers, making themselves transparent to new and current patients. Consequently, with every good there is a bad, social media is playing a big role in cyber bullying. The bullying takes place online, via text, cell phones, and any other electronic technology. Cyber bullying is different because it can be done 24 hours a day, it can be hard to delete messages once they have been posted to Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter. Cyber bullying poses the biggest risk to teens; it can lead to depression and have a negative effect on other social skills because most teens feel that it’s so easy to get away with cyber bullying. Additionally social media poses a threat to a person’s information, some of the features on social media that have become a daily routine for people, are what criminals are using to keep tabs on our whereabouts. Mass audience sites poses a higher threat to a person’s security, it has the highest potential of delivering malicious content. In conclusion, social media allows us to stay in contact with friends and family around the world, you can use it to network and to socialize. The uses are endless for social media and I don’t see an end to the expansion that these networks could have across many different industries, the possibilities are countless, and I for one look forward to what the future may bring.
