Darren’s Presenting Problems
Darren is a forty-five year old Caucasian male, who has come to career counseling because he is dissatisfied with his employment. Darren finds it hard to get along with supervisors and feels anxious when confronting challenging tasks. There are vocational issues, along with personal issues. Darren is going through a divorce and is currently unemployed. He explains he has never received what he really needed from his parents. There are different challenges Darren is experiencing at the same time. As his counselor, it is my duty to work through his issues using the Hill and O’Brien helping skills model.
Stage One – Exploration
Stage one; exploration is a critical stage in the counseling process, where the counselor and the client build upon their therapeutic relationship (Niles, Goodman & Pope, 2001). As Darren’s counselor, it is my responsibility to engage him in activities in order to build rapport, express empathy, and encourage story telling. In the exploration stage, it is essential to guide Darren in developing a comprehensive career …show more content…
At this point in counseling, it is important to help Darren to identify his strengths. An activity I would implement is the Clifton Strengths Finder 2.0, which is an online assessment helping individuals find their top five strengths (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). Darren will gain several insights of himself during this stage. Not only will this activity show Darren his strengths, but his weaker aspects. Darren can learn to work on these weaknesses through counseling. One of the important areas Darren will discover is why some tasks are more difficult than others (Capuzzi & Stauffer, 2012). For example, why does Darren find it difficult to get along with superiors? The goal is to really get down to the meaning of Darren’s problems and understand where he is coming

While prior research indicates a positive correlation between past levels of lynching and current social control practices against minority groups, we posit an inverse relationship for facets of social control that are protective of minorities. Specifically, we hypothesize that contemporary hate crime policing and prosecution will be less vigorous where lynching was more prevalent prior to 1930. Analyses show that levels of past lynching are associated with three outcome variables germane to hate crime policing and prosecution, but the effect of lynching is partly contingent on the presence of a minority group threat. That is, past lynching combined with a sizeable black population largely suppresses (1) police compliance with federal hate crime law, (2) police reports of hate crimes that target blacks, and in some analyses (3) the likelihood of prosecuting a hate crime case.
