While it is often discussed the effects of slavery on the ones enslaved, it is seldom considered how it effected the ones enslaving. Taking the free will of other human beings must have had psychological consequences on slave owners, and that fact is often disregarded. The movie not only showed the pain of Solomon Northup, a freeman kidnapped and sold into slavery, but also showed the shame and torture hidden amongst some of the people responsible for his situation. For example, Solomon’s first owner after being kidnapped, Ford, displays regret for his situation. He becomes aware of how Solomon (then known by his slave name, “Platt”) came to him, and feels sympathy, however takes no action to get him home, only transfers him to a new plantation.
