Speaker evaluation by Jerome Reinholt.

Speech: “How To Stay Calm When You Know You’ll Be Stressed” by Daniel Levitin (YouTube) 1. How does the speaker open speech? What works well in their introduction?
The speaker opens the speech with a story about being locked out of his house in Canada when it’s forty degrees outside. What works well with his introduction is his humorous story about being locked out of his house and having to break his basement window to get inside his house. 2. How is the speech organized? Does it flow smoothly?
The speech, in my opinion was not that organized and did not flow smoothly. It was a speech that started with the topic of basic home organization; then went into detailed health issues; and then ended with a mention of the speakers opening remark about how home organization will help the speaker in the future. 3. What are the main points and are they clear?
The main points of the speech were….? I am still not sure of the main points. It was very unclear what the main points of this speech were. I honestly feel he was called upon to speak to fill in for someone else at the last minute. He gave a speech, but it was a rambling talk. He had zero visual aids even though several huge screens were available for possible power point presentations. 4. What facts, quotes, stats, or stories does the speaker includes?
The speaker gave facts, quotes, stats, etc. such as: GlaxoSmithKlein estimates that 90 percent of drugs work in only 30 to 50 percent of people; 1 in 300 people then have a chance of having a drug affect them positively in order to meet the Number Needed to Treat (NNT); and that your 15 times more likely to be harmed the a drug than you are to be helped by a drug……etc. 5. How does the speech end?
The speech ends with the speaker referring back to his opening remarks about being locked out of his house in Canada when it is 40 degrees below zero in Canada and having a contractor installing a combination lock box with a key in it so that he can have a key to enter his house under any circumstances. 6. Is the speech effective: Did you learn something and did it maintain your attention? Why or why not?
I did not find the speech effective because the speaker gave a rambling speech and did not clearly outline his speaking points. It did not maintain my attention because his speech had no clear talking pints and the speaker went into some very detailed medical information that he did a poor job of relating to his main idea of how to stay calm when you know you’ll be stressed. Also, the speaker had a variety of data material clearly available such as large media screens that were not utilized. I did learn what the definition of NNT was; but that was about it. As result, I found this an ineffective speech.
