Title: For A Very Special Person, On A Very Special Day
General Purpose: To wish my grandmother a happy birthday.
Specific Purpose: To tell the story of when she killed a snake in her backyard, which really represents her personality and why I love her. I. Introduction a. Hi everyone! I hope you are all having a great time and enjoying the party because it took me a great time to plan it. b. But yeah, I know you’re all probably bored to death after having to stand still and listen to all of these speeches and are probably thinking right now “oh no, here comes the twenty-year-old granddaughter whose going to ramble on for hours”. c. So, instead of standing here and listing all the reasons why I love my grandma and why I wish her all the best for her birthday, I’m going to tell a story. II. Encountering the Snake d. It was summer of 2012 and I was hanging out with my ex at in my grandma’s pool when all of a sudden we see this 3 feet long snake approaching he edge right where we were. You would expect that my ex was going to solve the problem, right? Well, the first thing he did was freak out life I did. e. We easily spent around 5 minutes trying to remember all those facts you here about how to react when encountering a snake, those that you never really pay attention to because you don’t really think its ever going to happen, and then another 5 minutes trying to figure the shortest way to get inside the house. f. Finally, we decided that the best solution was to simply run as fast as we could. We barged into the house yelling about the snake and my uncle, who was sitting on the sofa watching TV, jumped up and grabbed the phone to call an exterminator. III. Here comes by Grandma to save the day g. As he dialed, my grandma overheard what had happened and she walked out of the kitchen. Saying nothing, she grabs a broom inside the closet and starts walking towards the backyard door. h. My ex and I looked at her in surprise and asked her what in the world was she going to do. At the time, she was 88 and she gave me the most unexpected answer someone her age could give: “kill it.” i. So there I was hiding behind my ex, who was hiding behind the door watching my 88-year-old grandma walk out the door to kill a freaking snake with a broom. j. Yes, her plan was to kill it… and she did. Turning back to us, as if nothing had happened, she asked, “Anyone want waffles? I just made some.” IV. Conclusion k. That was not only a demonstration of how strong and independent she is but of her unique way of dealing with problems, which I admire so much. l. She would say: “Problems are meant to be solved: some you learn from and other you smash them on the head and move on.” m. 91 years old, looking and thinking like that is not for everyone. An exemplary women, an exemplary human being. Happy Birthday, Grandma.

The Art of Public Speaking

...and connect with audiences of varied sizes. It also offers sound advice on how to avoid common public speaking mistakes, that even experienced speakers sometimes make, and tips on how to master the art of storytelling. The three main types of speeches are the informative, the persuasive, and the special occasion. Before deciding which best suits their purposes, however, speakers should first establish their objective in delivering the speech. Once speakers have the objective clearly established, they are then equipped to make the most suitable choice regarding what type of speech to deliver; however, before making this decision, they must have a clear understanding of the three main types of speeches. As the word “informative” implies, an informative speech “informs” those in attendance by providing them with information. Therefore, the speaker is a teacher, and his or her purpose is to educate the audience regarding a topic; and that topic may be an object, an event, a concept, or a process. Note: Given their visual nature, most informative speeches are more successful if the speaker uses visual aids such as PowerPoint presentations, flip charts, graphs, models, etc. A persuasive speech usually challenges an audience’s beliefs and/or tries to move those in attendance to change existing viewpoints or at least recognize the validity of opposing...

Commemorative Speech Exercise

...SP2000-Week 4-Effective Commemorative Speech Exercise The late President Ronald Reagan began his commemorative speech expressing deep sincerity and empathy his reason for the speech. It was a sad occasion, and I remember that day very clearly as I watched the astronauts take off, and then, what started out to be a moment of great excitement quickly turned into a heartbreaking occasion. I could not believe what I had just witnessed. I was speechless and numb. President Reagan’s face said it all. As he spoke, you could see the pain he was experiencing from this great tragedy. His speech was similar to that of a eulogy as he recounted the names of the astronauts one by one as if he knew them like family. President Reagan praised them for their great sacrifice for this country’s quest to explore outer space. Stephen Lucas (2012) stated, “Eulogies, Fourth of July speeches, and dedications are...
