The Saturn Corporation a subsidiary of General Motors entered the automotive market in 1990. This company was born through a unique partnership between General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union, that gave each entity an equal share in the decision making process. Saturn marketed itself as a “different kind of company”, placing quality, cost, and customer satisfaction a number one priority. The employees at Saturn are committed to being one of the world’s most successful car companies by adhering to a commitment to customer enthusiasm, teamwork, and trust and respect for all individuals. In Japan, Saturn’s slogan translated into English is “The company and car with the deepest respect for the people” Saturn vision was soon rewarded, as within two years of production J.D. Powers and Associates recognized them as the number one car in customer rating based on quality, reliability, and satisfaction. They remained number one in this category from 1993 through 1998. During this time many car companies developed and marketed “Sport Utility Vehicles” which soon cornered the market. Saturn had not developed such a vehicle and soon lost their share of the market. Saturn’s ability to meet these changes was paramount to their continued success. Saturn developed space-frame construction and dent resistant polymer body panels that reduced outside noises, which helped, distance themselves from the other automakers. They were the first U.S. auto manufacturer to build both a manual and automatic transmission on the same assembly line. Saturn introduced an automatic transmission featuring fuzzy logic, which allowed the transmission to learn how the driver drove, reducing the amount of hunting and indecisions that a typical transmission would do.
