The use of original soundbites transformed the film, for me, and made it three times more meaningful yet disheartening to know that something of this matter occurred and continues to affect a multitude of people on an international level.
The way in which The Brandon Teena Story is related to trans representation in American popular culture poses some questions I believe are pertinent especially in today’s society: how does this case from the mid-1990s challenge us to rethink the importance of visibility and action for violence against women; necessitate new emphasis on body and assessment of social meaning ascribed on female bodies? What’s the truth about Trans sex crimes and do they play out differently when those circumstances in mind?
Not only does this entire story challenge conservative views, it challenges the understanding of feminists and the conventional ideas of the body, sexual differences, and violence against women. Contrary, portrayals of Brandon from the media perspective, view the murder as the inevitable consequence of ‘deviance and deceit’. Newspaper headlines continuously addressed Brandon’s androgyny as the true reasoning for the murder. For instance some include: "Deadly Deception: Teena Brandon's Double Life May Have Led to a Triple Murder"; "Man Who Killed Cross-Dressing Rape Accuser Gets Death Penalty". Unfortunately, these reflect the same sentiment and hatred spout through the tones and actions of Falls City Sheriff
