Murray argues (2008, p. 130) that size acceptance helps to “position the ‘fat’ body as part of a counter-aesthetic where ‘fatness’ is re-hierarchized over thinness as the superior feminine bodily form. This may seem empowering to ‘fat’ women who have uniformly been denigrated, devalued, and regarded as grotesque in the context of dominant aesthetics”. These figures were female, the counterpart of the male kouros, which also featured the same distinctive archaic smile. Like the male sculptures of these figures, the kores were also crafted as youthful. Although the most dramatic and obvious difference between the kouros form is how these sculptures were not nude, but rather they were depicted clothed and draped in fabric. There was also more of a focus on elaborate hair styles along with the usage of decorative and vibrant coloration on the elaborately draped fabric clothing. IT is through the use of the fabric that movement can be seen for these figures were not nude; therefore, movement could not be conveyed as easily as the male figures. Moreover, the postures on these sculptures are portrayed as relaxed, or somber almost, and much less rigid in appearance than the competing male sculptures. The diversity of form shifted slightly as well with the use of an outstretched arm, thereby attempting to engage in a possibly inviting and friendly pose.
