I have found a very meaningful quote that describes the bond between Liesel and Hans, her foster father, found on page 36: “Possibly the only good to come out of these nightmares was that it brought Hans Hubermann, her new papa, into the room, to soothe her, to love her.” This quote demonstrates how Liesel needed comfort right after these nightmares and Hans was always there for her. This act of comforting Liesel made Hans this caring father Liesel didn’t have. After a few weeks, when the wetting incident happened, Hans had discovered “The Grave Digger’s Handbook”. When they both decided to read it and when Hans taught Liesel the alphabet, Hans became not only a father but also a friend to her.
