Living in a world where humans are no longer required to perform any menial task, while they have technology to keep them entertained as they do their work means that humans are too dependent on technology. It also means that they don’t know how much control technology has towards them. One of the most common threads in Harrison Bergeron, August 2026, and The Pediatrician is that technology is taking over and destroying society. Technology is is becoming one of the greatest culprits in all of humankind. Any society shouldn’t let the use of technology control their lives for it can decrease a human’s brain function, it can control the lives of others all of a sudden, and it can rule all of society the more it’s being used.

In the movie, Harrison Bergeron, the main theme of this film is that “The power of technology can decrease a human’s brain function.” It’s the year 2053. An American government forces all citizen to wear headsets that decreases their brain function. Apparently Harrison Bergeron shows signs of intelligence. "In the kitchen the breakfast stove gave a hissing sigh and ejected from its warm interior.” This use of symbolism helps the readers understand that the stove is meant to represent as a cook who sighs after doing their job. Without the use of personification, the readers would not be able to understand the importance of machinery doing a human's job. The use of simile helps portray the futuristic machinery. "The dinner dishes manipulated like magic tricks." In this passage, humans are becoming the creator of a weapon that could lead to demise, and the continuation of improving technology could suddenly become too

Moder Totalitarianism

...nations that communism was not as great as it sounded. British writer George Orwell wrote the novel 1984 published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, Inc. in 1949. 1984 is a political novel written with the purpose of warning readers in the West of the dangers of totalitarian government. In 1949, the Cold War had not yet escalated, and many Americans supported communism as possible political systems for the west. Therefore, Orwell wrote his novel in order to expose the cruelty and oppression of communist countries. In his dystopian nation, Orwell gave a sneak peak of what a country could become if the people gave all the power to the government. In 1984, Orwell portrays the perfect totalitarian society in which the government monitors and controls every aspect of human life to the extent that having a disloyal thought is against the law. They do so with the use of technology such as tele screens and microphones across the city which allowed the government to monitor all the citizens almost all of the times. In order to keep the citizens of London loyal and obedient to the government, they use psychological manipulation designed to overwhelm the minds capacity for independent thought. Every citizen has a giant tele screen which not only monitors their behavior, but also feed citizens with positive propaganda of the government which makes them believe their government is successful in every way. Kurt Vonnegut Literary Research Paper

...appeared in Playboy magazine the same year the collection was released. Eleven of the stories were reprinted from Vonnegut’s 1961 short story collection Canary in a Cat House (Vonnegut). This paper will focus on four futuristic science fiction stories from the collection. These stories, “Welcome to the Monkey House”, “Harrison Bergeron”, “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow”, and “Unready to Wear” all share a dystopian science fiction theme. Science and technology are supposed to make the world a better place, but instead, Vonnegut concludes they only create a new set of problems (Farrell, “Science and Technology in the Works of Kurt Vonnegut”). Television is often a target of satire in much of his fiction from the 1950’s. He describes it as desensitizing and numbing while deceiving the masses (Werlock). Vonnegut uses satire and pessimism throughout these dystopian stories. Satire is a special form of literature that seeks to uncover ridiculous ideas and customs in a society (Mowery). Each story portrays a totalitarian government that proposes an irrational solution to genuine problems. Vonnegut uses dystopian fiction and his aversion to science, technology, and television to expose what he feels are foolish ideas and weaknesses in our society. This paper will analyze each story, contrasting how each...

Pros And Cons Of Dystopian Literature

...Do you have high hopes for the future? Having the dream of great technology, and “flawless” governments. However, have you ever wondered about how bad the future society can turn out to be? Dystopian literature gives you an idea of what can happen in the future, which usually involves flaws in the society and lies from the government. Studying dystopian literature helps us understand that we need to change our views on equality, make sure we have less government control (let everyone have a voice), and start watching and controlling our impact on the government. To start off with, studying dystopian literature helps us understand that we need to accept diversity and improve or change our views on equality. To illustrate, Harrison Bergeron tells the story about a teen boy named Harrison who fights against the government to start a revolution that will allow people to use their unique strengths. 'Repent, Harlequin, Said The Ticktockman'

...R. Fuller once stated “Humanity is acquiring all the right technology for all the wrong reasons.” In the some dystopian short stories, technological control runs the society. Although towns are controlled the same way, the technology affects the citizens of the town very differently. The use of technology to control citizens can put lives at risk, make people feel isolated, and can force equality. Although it can affect people's lives in different ways, it overall shows technological control destroys freedom. In the short story, “‘Repent, Harlequin!’ Said the Ticktockman” by Harlan Ellison, the society is run by the Master Timekeeper, a man who uses technology to threaten the lives of citizens and destroy their freedom. He controls the society...

...[pic] JPPSS ELA COURSE GUIDE 2011-2012 ENGLISH I The JPPSS Instructional Sequence Guides are aligned with the LA Comprehensive Curriculum. JPPSS Implementation of Activities in the Classroom Incorporation of activities into lesson plans is critical to the successful implementation of the Louisiana Comprehensive Curriculum. The Comprehensive Curriculum indicates one way to align instruction with Louisiana standards, benchmarks, and grade-level expectations. The curriculum is aligned with state content standards, as defined by grade-level expectations (GLEs), and organized into coherent, time-bound units with sample activities and classroom assessments to guide teaching and learning. The units in the curriculum have been arranged so that the content to be assessed will be taught before the state testing dates. While teachers may substitute equivalent activities and assessments based on the instructional needs, learning styles, and interests of their students, the Comprehensive Curriculum should be a primary resource when planning instruction. Grade level expectations—not the textbook—should determine the content to be taught. Textbooks and other instructional materials should be used as resource in teaching the grade level expectations...

...Singularity. That this sublime juxtapositional tautology has gone unnoticed until now is itself remarkable. We're so exquisitely privileged to be living in this time, to be born right on the precipice of the greatest paradigm shift in human history, the only thing that approaches the importance of that reality is finding like minds that realize the same, and being able to make some connection with them.
