The transition from elementary school into middle school is a difficult switch for preadolescent individuals. Preadolescents are experiencing many difficult changes in their lives at this point in time, such as physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. Transitioning from elementary school into middle school can also be quite scary for young children. It is vital for preadolescents to have the necessary resources to aid in their transition. Unfortunately, many low income families do not have those vital resources, such as time and money, to name a few. ‘Follow the Lead’ (FTL) is an intervention based after school program targeting low income preadolescents to provide a safe and encouraging environment for preadolescent individuals to help …show more content…
Reason behind this specific targeted group is because of the unique changes preadolescents face at this time. Preadolescent individuals can be highly at-risk if they do not have the appropriate support. One of the changes preadolescents face at this time is physical changes, such as entering puberty, hormone changes and trying to become comfortable with their bodies ("Changes -- Helping Your Child Through Early Adolescence," 2005). These physical changes are visible to the naked eye and are unable to be prevented. If preadolescents are not educated about these changes, they could become extremely uncomfortable and self-conscious regarding their newly developed bodies. Another critical change they face is emotional changes. With changes in hormones comes changes in emotion regulation. Preadolescents seem to over exaggerate simple things such as having to get braces. Individuals are also very self-conscious at this time, so they have to deal with the increased sensitivity that goes along with these changes ("Changes -- Helping Your Child Through Early Adolescence," 2005). Cognitive changes are another thing are dealing with during this transition from elementary to middle school. Individuals have an increase in abstract and logical thinking (Anthony, n.d.). Seniors will not only have to go through an application process, but also a training process. The application process looks for senior students who have an above average GPA, experience with children, leadership experience, and three credits of psychology or child development. Also, students will be required to write an essay on the importance of role models and risks preadolescents face during this time. The training process will include sessions in active listening, conflict resolution, and an overall lesson based on preadolescence as a whole. Although high school seniors will be running this intervention, it will be overseen by the school guidance counselor. High school students do not have full education on preadolescent development, therefore guidance counselors will be overseeing the progress of the intervention program. Having high school seniors run this program not only gives them excellent opportunity and insight into their future field, but also gives preadolescents someone more relatable to look up to and

...Though often discussed as though it were a discrete event, puberty comprises one segment of a larger developmental continuum and is notable for rapid transformation across a multitude of domains. Research suggests that an earlier rate of pubertal maturation in girls correlates with a number of detrimental outcomes compared with on-time or later maturation. The present review synthesizes the research on negative psychological sequelae of early pubertal timing in adolescent girls. Emphasis is on three theoretical perspectives by which precocious development is believed to affect the emergence of adverse outcomes: biological, psychosocial, and selection effects. Consequences of early pubertal timing As a developmental milestone, puberty is notable for its rapid and near-simultaneous transformation across biological, social, and psychological domains. As physical appearance matures, individuals must navigate changing social norms and expectations. This often necessitates a confrontation and, perhaps, reorganization of identity and self-perception. Aberrance in maturational timing seems to increase risk for emotional and behavioral problems during adolescence and early adulthood (Peterson & Taylor, 1980). In particular, girls who mature earlier than their peers seem to find pubertal adjustment especially challenging and are more likely to experience detrimental sequelae (e.g., Caspi & Moffitt, 1991; Ge, Conger & Elder, 1996). The beginning of adolescence, around the onset of puberty, is characterized by large hormonal and physical changes. The transition from childhood to adulthood is also characterized by psychological changes in terms of identity, self-consciousness, and cognitive flexibility. In the past decade, it has been demonstrated that various regions of the human brain undergo development during adolescence and beyond. Some of the brain regions that undergo particularly protracted development are involved in social cognitive function in adults. In the first section of this paper, I briefly describe evidence for a circumscribed network of brain regions involved in understanding other people. Next, I describe evidence that some of these brain regions undergo structural development during adolescence. This paper highlights research about risk factors for depression in children and adolescents and links it to current knowledge about interventions aimed at preventing depression in youth. Basic epidemiologic and clinical research indicates that increased risk for depression is associated with being female; a family history of depression, particularly in a parent; subclinical depressive symptoms; anxiety; stressful life events; neurobiological dysregulation; temperament/personality (e.g., neuroticism); negative cognitions; problems in self-regulation and coping; and interpersonal dysfunction. These vulnerabilities both increase individuals’ chances of encountering stress and decrease their ability to deal with the stress once it occurs.
