Theodore has a job where he builds imaginary connectedness and imaginary intimacy through letters for people that may as well be virtual, as he does not know them nor ever cares to meet them. While in his cubicle, Theodore is just imagining relationships for other people. An ordinary day at work finds him navigating a crowded city riding the subway, headphones in, he asks his device to play a melancholy song. We know with his choice of music that Theodore is in a constant state of sadness. He does all this all the while sealed off from any hope of connection from those around him. Throughout the movie we see Theodore’s flashbacks with his wife, Catherine. He longs for a connection but he has difficulties making them. Theodore has a conversation about Catherine with Samantha, as Samantha is curious to know what it’s like to be married. Samantha asks him why he hasn’t been divorced yet, Theodore tells her that he likes being married. The reason behind them getting divorced is as simple as the fact that Theodore, “ [...] hid [himself] from her, [and] left her alone in the relationship..” (imdb). Theodore is an individual, and through his separation from Catherine, but his still prevalent desire to want to still be married, shows that he wants connectedness but he didn’t want the complications of real love. He misses the companionship that coincided with marriage, without the baggage that it brings. He gets his ideal type of relationship of sole emotional companionship with Samantha, and wants to keep it that way. He likes the fact that his relationship with Samantha is bodiless. Although bodiless relationships are seen as more difficult, since it lacks the necessity of physicality, the average person would rather have real love that includes both physical and emotional aspects of a relationship with one
