Understanding discipline

Self-discipline includes:- * Reliability
Your group can rely on you when needed to complete tasks or help give a good impression on the group with appropriate behaviour, punctuality, attitude towards work, and general qualities. * Personal grooming and presentation
Good hygiene, appropriate clothing for work area (e.g. Sports gear for practical lessons, Smart-casual for lessons). * Composure and sound attitude
Ability to control emotions and keep personal life separate from college/school/work, to remain full concentration on why you’re there. * Punctuality and Time management
Always on time for lessons/shifts/lectures to avoid distraction and bad reflection on the team. * Personality
Being friendly at all times, open minded and not judgmental, respectful of other people’s opinions even if you don’t agree. Helpful, interested, patient, and hard working. * Good performance
Showing that you have listened to instructions by proceeding with tasks no questions asked and completing it.

How does self-discipline affect me?
Having self-discipline means I am reliable in the eyes of my team and my leaders, I can understand all my tasks and can complete them with minimal supervision, which means my tutors will have more time for people who may need more support. When I have self-discipline I have willpower, the ability to ignore distractions and proceed with instructions I have previously listened to. I am punctual, respectful, organised, hardworking, mature, and patient. This means work can be done with no extra obstacles, as I will have the right equipment and attitude to do so.

What happens without self-discipline?

Without self-discipline you can lose respect and trust not only for yourself but for your team also, as it shows unreliability. This could result in you losing your place on that team whether it is at college/university or at work. Failure to comply with the set rules e.g. being late creates distractions to others ,when you have to question what the task is, because you have missed the briefing, you also won’t receive as much attention from your group leader and may not understand the tasks even when they are explained by peers/colleagues, therefore you may not complete it or it’s incorrect when you do. Also if you lose your place, there is one less team member which means one less mind available for ideas, one less pair of hands during practical work, and it looks bad on the team leader when they have someone who isn’t committed.

* Adhering to team ethic
This means following team rules and respecting the values within the group. Failure to do so results in: * Distraction * Loss of respect * Sets the wrong example * Loss of trust * Makes understanding tasks more difficult * Lose more motivation * Left behind * Waste your own and other peoples time

* Appropriate behaviour
Again sticking to the rules and values, but also following instructions immediately and keeping discipline. Without doing this you could: * Violating health and safety regulations * Bringing harm to other or yourself * Lose out on fun activities for your group (Group punishment) * Again lose trust and respect, waste time, distract others and set the wrong example. * Banned from regularly used facilities.

* Respect for others
Showing respect to the people surrounding you, you are friendly and considerate, and available when others need help or guidance. In absence of this quality: * No one will help you * Social isolation * Seen as selfish * Given no responsibilities (No trust) * May not be given any chances to improve * Given boring or more difficult tasks * Punishment – Group punishment

* Completion of all tasks given
Completing all tasks to the best standard of your ability with no corrections or missing parts needed. Why should you do this? * People will view you as unprofessional * May effect the health and safety and you and others around you * You could be criticised * Could result in disciplinary action

* Participate fully in all activities
Showing motivation and interest in what you’re doing, playing a trustworthy and respectful role within your team. Because without it: * Team cannot work as fast resulting in less time for other tasks or fun * You may have an idea which results in a better solution * You look lazy * Seen as incapable of teamwork

D2-Leadership and

An evaluation to my own skills and qualities as a leader. As an example I am going to use the activity I lead at Great Tower. First I was instructed to lead the group, using the navigational skills I had learnt the previous year, to the area of activity, upon doing this I stayed in front of the group and kept checking back to ensure we were all still together, before explaining the task I ensured everybody in the group was listening so that they understood fully the instructions, objectives, and small risks in front of them. During the activity I observed the timer I needed to use and gave advice and encouragement to the group, for instance “Hurry up guys, you have 10 seconds left to beat the record, you can do this!” After the activity I told the group they didn’t beat the record and asked what their opinion was on how they could improve their ability if they were to face the challenge again. The skills and qualities I demonstrated on this occasion were: * Assertive – I made sure the group were listening * Honest – I informed the group of risks, and gave a truthful opinion afterwards * Punctuality – When I lead the group, we arrived on time to the activity * Patient – Even though I had in mind my own solutions, and could see what the group were doing wouldn’t work, I let them work out their own solutions and only advised them. * Friendly/Good sense of humour – I wasn’t too strict and laughed along with the group. * Positive/Encouraging – Kept the groups motivation and confidence high.

As a result of my leadership the team were able to demonstration various different ways of working together and completing the task, although they didn’t beat the record the group worked exceptionally well together.
However this was only a group of 8 people so therefore was quite small and easy to control, there was no need for me to use the whistle provided as everyone could hear me even when talking amongst themselves. I think that had I of been put in control of a larger group my confidence would of lowered and I wouldn’t of been as efficient as I was. As a result of this conclusion I need to work on my confidence with public speaking.

There is a direct correlation between personal responsibility and self-discipline; both are required for college success.
