...Double Consciousness is a term coined by W. E. B. Du Bois to define an individual whose distinctiveness is divided into several facets. As a theoretical tool, “double consciousness” discloses the divisions in American society and allows for a full understanding of those separations. The term "double consciousness" originated from an 1897 Atlantic Monthly article of Du Bois's titled Strivings of the Negro People. It was later republished and slightly revised under the title Of Our Spiritual Strivings in his assortment of essays, The Souls of Black Folk. This was a concept established by the American sociologist to describe the sensed contradiction between social values and day-to-day struggle confronted by blacks in the United States. Being a black as well as an American raised conflicts amongst American social ideals, which blacks shared. Nevertheless, DuBois saw blacks as secluded from the visible American life. The problem of African Americans double consciousness can be resolved. ...social and natural sciences. The Harlem Renaissance died out with the Great Depression, but it has left behind a lasting legacy for all Americans including these powerful stories. One idea that emerged from the Harlem Renaissance was called "double consciousness." This theory developed by writer-activist W. E. B. DuBois articulated the psychological effects of living under racism. DuBois's theory focused on the ways that blacks who were confronted with stereotypes but also were aware of a reality of black life much different from the stereotypes lived with both of these conflicting modes of thought. Double consciousness is an idea that seeks to explain the effects of segregation and racism in the daily lives of blacks, and can be seen in the choices Harlem Renaissance artists made. Harlem renaissance authors wrote during a time of self-awareness, which also included an awareness of self as perceived by others, primarily through the eyes of racism. The language choices made by these authors reflect this duality, as the characters "code switch" (a linguistic term for the way people use both dialect and Standard English in different circumstances) between Black English and Standard English. It’s a permeating factor responsible for many inequalities faced among races, widening the social gap between white and nonwhite Americans. Accessibility to education, jobs, and housing are all directly affected by societal inconsistencies of privilege and power. Ultimately, racism isn’t caused by white privilege; white privilege is caused by racism. Yet racism isn't a problem that resides in the minds of individuals; it lies rooted deep in our social institutions. It is necessary we reconstruct the societal ideologies of race and class to expel this self-perpetuating cycle. In this essay I will address these racial struggles for power and privilege, the role it plays in education, and my personal experience towards racism and how it has affected me as a person. Privilege, as defined by Websters Dictionary, is a ‘special right, advantage, or immunity available only to a particular person or group’. In that sense, privilege is in and of itself a direct opposition to equality. Alongside this privilege comes power-the ability to coerce another’s behavior-with access to social, political and economic resources.
