What is Honor?
My understanding of the term honor.
Honor is defined as a source of credit or distinction, and is associated with reverence, dignity, reputation, good name and a good sense of what is morally correct. The key part to honor is having respect for others and for you; the two must act together because without both, there is nothing. I strongly believe that reputation is hard to gain and easily lost. Think about this, every day thousands of planes fly somewhere and there is never any news about a successful landing, but if any of those flights crash, it is all over the news. This fact tells me that in order to keep one’s honor, one must maintain a set standard of excellence. It will only take one infraction to cause said person to forfeit one’s honor.
Nicholas Boileau once said: “Honor is like a rugged island without a shore, once you have left it, you cannot return.” Honor is something in which is not obtained and sustained easily. One must have patience and study to become a person of integrity and goodwill. Honor is an everyday thing; obstacles trying to deter one from being honorable lay in life’s everyday path. Perseverance is a key to honor; one must fight the constant impeding objects in order to maintain the highest level of honor. The shore of an island is often looked at as something isolated and secluded yet has a certain charm about it. Honor is much like the shore in this sense.
Honor must come from inside and resist being influenced by minor factors. A test of all will power living with honor will not always be the most popular route and possibly could cause short- term social separation. The shore is a place, which represents compromise. Honor has no room for compromising in no way is it a partial way of life, yet it cannot be turned off and on when desired. People often see honor as something impressionable yet one cannot pretend to be…...

Honor and War

...Name Prof. Name POLI 150: Causes of Intl. Conflict 30 October 2012 Honor and War Studying war is no easy task. There are many variables to consider and various factors at play. Ethics, morality, greed, religion, honor—the list could go on forever. With such a plethora of motivating variables behind war it can be quite difficult in deciding which specific factors would be the most productive in dedicating the time to scientifically study. This paper is going to focus on one of those factors: honor. Honor is a productive variable in the scientific study of war because it has historically been a major factor in war and conflict. In July of 1914 during World War I the Belgians were given a choice by the aggressive German military: either allow the German military unrestricted access through Belgian territories and remain unharmed, or be mercilessly slaughtered like cattle. Belgium’s reply to this ultimatum was: “Were it to accept the proposals laid before it, the Belgian Government would sacrifice the nations honor while being false to its duties towards Europe.” This may seem like a normal response that would be given to any bully by those on the defense; however, this reply was unique because the Belgian government knew beforehand that it did not have the military might needed to stand up to the Germans—it simply wanted to preserve honor. In fact, the Belgian government knew that by not complying with the Germans militant request they would most certainly face their own......

The Role of Honor

...The Role of Honor The ancient Greek culture during the time of the Trojan War was warrior based. Every man was expected to fight and to fight well. A man's honor depended on many things like how well he fought, how much material wealth he had, and his hospitality. A man must look strong at all times, and never appear to be weak. This warrior based characteristic of the Greek culture caused many problems and feuds among the people. The Iliad consists of many different situations where it can clearly be seen that honor played a major role in the outcome. Such situations are the argument among Agamemnon and Akhilleus, the conversation between Andromakhe and Hektor, and the fight between Akhilleus and Hektor. Immediately the reader is introduced to a situation very much involving the personal honor of two men. Agamemnon, the great leader of the Akhaians, and Akhilleus, the greatest warrior of the Akhaians, are entailed in a fierce argument. Agamemnon has angered the gods by failing to return Khryses, the daughter of the priest, which he had claimed as a prize in a previous victory. Akhilleus discovers that this is the reason why the gods are angry and insists that Agamemnon return the priest's daughter. To save this army, Agamemnon agrees, but demands in return a prize of honor. Agamemnon feels that his honor is being compromised, and he is willing to give his reward up without receiving any compensation in return from his soldier's winnings. He is the leader of the Akhaians,...

Honors Program

...The Honors Program at St. Clair County Community College has been challenging intelligent students and indulging them in the joys of learning for over a decade. This program is not about students being better or smarter than others; it’s about challenging students intellectually on a level that is most suitable for them and their abilities. Honors courses allow students with high abilities to take part in a deeper learning experience and not be dispirited by lectures on concepts they already have a full understanding of. It is in these classes that students are able to meet others who share the same level of passion for that subject; people who are not only taking the class because it is required, but because they are eager to learn. If even one student over the past ten years has benefitted from the Honors Program, then it has been a success by my standards. The effect that honors classes have on students is not one that can be seen or measured, it is purely intellectual and it changes and shapes their minds in a way that might just better them for the rest of their lives. In his graduation speech earlier this year, Michael Brunner spoke about a couple of his honors professors saying that they “not only teach students to understand the required material but comprehend and critically discuss it at a college level.”. I have been in an honors class for less than a month and it has completely changed my outlook on learning. It is because of this that I am excited to......

Medal of Honor

...We have all heard about the Medal of Honor, but how much do you really know about it. Yes it is the nation’s highest military award, but how about when it was established. Did you know that there are three different versions of the award one for the army, one for the air force, and one for the navy marines and coast guard? The history of our nation’s highest medal is deep with honor and self sacrifice. The origin of the Medal of Honor came about during the civil war. Iowa Senator James W. Grimes proposed a medal for individual valor, and was signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on December 21, 1861. It was first turned down by Winfield Scott the Commanding General of the United States Army at that time, but it was first used in the Navy. Not far there after a different wording was made and the Army’s version was signed into law on July 12, 1862. The Medal of Honor has changed appearance from the time it was signed into law until now. When it was first created the familiar blue with stars that we see today was not there, in fact it was red white and blue resembling the flag, and nation’s colors. It wasn’t until 1904 for the army and 1912 for the navy that the ribbon was changed to resemble today’s Medal of Honor. The Air Force’s version has never changed from the time that it was created in 1965, and prior to that year airmen were award the army’s version. There are two ways a service member can be put in for the award. The first is by his or her chain of......

1.02 Honors

...1.02 Honors Bill S.60 is a bill proposed to prohibit aliens who are not lawfully present in the United States from being eligible for postsecondary education benefits that are not available to all citizens and nationals of the United States. Bill S.60 was first proposed by David Sen Vitter in Louisiana. The bill would prevent illegal immigrants from being able to go to an American college with financial aid. The people that are affected are children that didn’t ask to be born in a country and never receive proper verification. It’s meant to keep immigrants out by limiting our notion of the land of opportunity. It may affect the government by initially saving money because they wouldn’t need it for extra funding. Lowers the job market competition. Many Americans argue that since the parents of illegal aliens don’t pay taxes, their children do not deserve the equal opportunity of higher education and financial aid. They also believe that illegal immigrants are lazy and taking advantage of America’s “generosity”. Many also believe illegal immigrants are criminals and that giving a criminal ‘free money’ is foolish and unethical. What’s unethical is denying children born in the United States a chance to even become someone able to pay the dues of being an American citizen. Getting a necessary higher education is a pathway to citizenship. America was built by immigrants, we are the land of opportunity, let’s not forget where we all came from. Sacred Honor

... our fortunes, and our sacred honor". I said: "I believe It is this pledge of "Sacred Honor" that has made us rich as a nation". "We are rich because we trust each other, and when that pledge is broken, we will be poor". He said "Now I understand ". Why are we rich? Because we can borrow capital to start a business, and the lenders trust they will be paid back. We call the police and trust they will come to our aid. We put our money in investments and trust it will not be absconded with. We trust in fair elections to choose people to represent us in civic affairs, and we trust they will make and enforce fair and equitable laws for our city or county or state, or country that will protect us from those who would betray our trust for their own selfish greed. Knowing, full-well, however, the most well-intentioned law cannot substitute for trust between people We can have as many open government laws as we can write but if it is an elected person's studied intention to rip us off, it can be done. We have seen it too often. Over and over, in the last several years, big business has betrayed our trust, in spite of myriad laws. Trust cannot be legislated. Perhaps we have spent too much time perusing our second most famous document - the constitution - to discover our rights as citizens, and too little time re- reading that last sentence in the Declaration of Independence, reviewing our responsibilities inherent in that pledge of our sacred honor we made to each other. Saving Honor

...Saving Honor The poem, Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, shows how one of Camelot’s most revered knights, Sir Gawain, will fight for his life, honor, and dignity. Camelot, King Arthur, and The Knights of The Round Table are all names synonymous with all that is good. During the fourteenth century, the knights are expected to have honor and respect for all citizens and Sir Gawain is the epitome of honor. Gawain does not think highly of himself but sustains a high status with knights being a blood relative of King Arthur. By story’s end, Gawain will question if he maintains his honor, respect, and dignity in a fight for his life. The poem opens with Arthur, the knights, and some members of the community celebrating the new year when an unknown knight arrives in the kingdom. The narrator describes him as, “giant” in stature: he, his horse, and his ax are all green, but with a green armor outlined in gold. He calls out his challenge, “give me a well-aimed stroke, and agree / To accept another in repayment when my turn / Arrives” (1. 294-296). Eager to prove his bravery to his uncle, the king, Gawain accepts the challenge. He understands that he will face the same fate one year later and takes the Green Knight’s ax, swings with all his might, and beheads him. At the moment, the hubris of Gawain is at the highest level. Gawain thinks it may be the end of his challenge, but the Green Knight retrieves his head from the floor and tells Gawain to meet him a year to the date at the......

...Honor “Honor- 1. honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs. 2. a source of credit or distinction.” (dictionary.reference.com) If you were to ask someone what honor meant, they would most likely take a few seconds to answer and their response would be something like, “honor is being true to your own ideas.” If we really think about it, most of us don’t really know what honor means. We think we do, but in reality we haven’t thought too deeply into the question. Honor. Years ago it was one of the many traits that made a humble and decent man. Men would go through great lengths to get honor, and to make sure that it wasn’t lost, because back then if you lost your honor, you lost your manhood. In one of Aristotle’s books Nichomachean Ethics he described what an honorable man looked like. Years ago chivalry had a lot to do with honor. You had to protect those who needed protection, and if you succeeded then you had honor. If men showed certain traits they were considered honorable men, and that was what most men wanted. Now, honor has a different meaning than it did years ago. We have all heard of the many different types of honor there are. One of the most common type of honor that I have heard of is ,The Code of Honor, which is a list of requirements for one to obtain respect while being in a group of people. In most groups if the code of honor is not achieved your are to be shamed. There is also the group of honor, which is a group of people who agree and while......
