...One Choice The novel Divergent by Veronica Roth, is the first book in a trilogy that follows the life of 16-year-old Beatrice Prior. Beatrice lives in a future version of Chicago where society is spit into five factions. Each faction indicates a certain virtue: Candor (the honest), Erudite (the knowledgeable), Amity (the kind), Abnegation (the selfless), and Dauntless (the brave). At the age of 16, the children of all the factions take a test. This test tells them what faction they belong in, but there are the rare exceptions when the test doesn’t work. They call these people Divergent, and Beatrice Prior is Divergent. She has to choose whether to keep her safe life in Abnegation with her family, or to choose a new, exciting life in Dauntless. She only has one choice, and she choses Dauntless. Was this the best choice for Beatrice Prior? It is told that ever since Beatrice was little, she watched the Dauntless with awe. She loved how the Dauntless looked so free. At school every morning she would watch as the Dauntless would prove their “bravery” by jumping out of a moving train. At the choosing ceremony, Beatrice almost picks Abnegation. Her choice to become Dauntless is very sudden. At Dauntless headquarters, one of the faction leaders, Eric, is waiting for the initiates. For some odd reason, instead of straying from such stories, I become emotionally attached to them. Veronica Roth, through the Divergent series, did that same kind of magic to me. I do not know how it happened. It just HAPPENED. The Divergent series follows the story of Beatrice ‘Tris’ Prior as she struggles to make difficult choices about love, family, and sacrifice. The faction-based world she lives in turns out to be a lot different from what she has always known and she is determined to unravel the intricacies of life and fully embrace her Divergence. I may be alone in this, but Allegiant, the third and final book of the trilogy, is my favorite of the pack. It is filled with a lot of thrilling twists, unexpected revelations, and meaningful lessons that got me holding my breath up to the last page. In the first two books, I have seen a lot of Tris’ hasty and self-destructive decisions which caused her so much trouble (Like when she took it upon herself to lie to Tobias and go to the Erudite headquarters which almost led to her own execution). However, I believe that the outcome of these decisions, no matter how shattering and appalling they were, have helped her to truly develop into the mature individual that she has become in Allegiant. The Hunger Games and Divergent paint separate pictures that both express the story of young heroines stepping up to the threshold of rebellion. Each heroine faces their challenges all whilst trying to grow and thrive in a world that wants them dead. However, within the pages of these books, when the blood and bone has been stripped away, the reader can trace the threads of similarities. These similarities exist between the two novels and also between their dystopian settings and the real world. Katniss Everdeen and Beatrice Prior are not only two rebels fighting for a cause, but are also two young women who face everyday hardships beyond their respective wars. They have the ability to teach the reader far more about life than is seemingly possible; lessons that are relatable and useful to just about anyone, regardless of age. Knowing what one stands for and residing in that truth, understanding that what is broken can be mended, and believing that gender does not define one’s abilities are three of the most important messages aimed at young adults in The Hunger Games and Divergent trilogies.
