Why College Education Is Important to Me

...Why college education is important to me? I strongly believe one of the most critical ways of reaching your dreams and goals in life are to have a college education. Without a college education you may find it extremely difficult to have a good enough career that will provide you and your family with enough money to do the extra things in life that are pleasurable and exciting. I also strongly believe that having a college education will teach my children that continuing their education beyond high school equals success for them in the future. Without a college education one cannot reach their full potential thus making them unable to achieve their highest and most sought after dreams and goals. One of the main reasons to continue your education and get a college degree is that it opens many doors of opportunity and allows us to obtain a better career. It is hard to find a decent job that will pay you a decent salary with only a high school education. Although a college education does not guarantee success it does give a little bit of an edge over a high school graduate applying for the same position. You have more choices in careers with a college degree thus giving you more choices in life. Having a college degree for the most part means having more money. More money means being able to do things that you cannot do with a job obtained by only having a high school education. In my case it is important to me because it played a huge role in my child custody case. I was...

Changing Our Lives Essay

...Assignment 2 Changing Our Lives Essay changing our lives essays Alicia Carter Instructor: LaRuth Ensley ENG 090 10-22-2012 Changing Our Lives Essay We all want success, money, and happiness right? Would a college education not be the key to having all of those things? Returning to school now would ensure that I could have money, with a successful job and happiness in the gratification of completing my degree, all the while, setting a stellar example for my daughter, making my family proud and allowing me the opportunity to obtain a college degree. All of this is essential positive things to add to this journey called life. I was once the young high school graduate with bright eyes and a promising future going to college. I enrolled in a large local University and started my journey to arming myself with the necessary tools to have a stellar career. After the initial shock of freedom and adulthood, two years later, I found myself socially at the top of my game, but educationally the dean had placed me the former 3.8 high school student on academic probation. I was now struggling to make the grade in college. I now know that I was not focused, or driven, my priorities were not intact and the entire long-term goal to me was just a fleeting futuristic challenge. The importance of college had not set in and therefore it appeared I was paying to go to school to become a better social butterfly. My parents did not seem to find the importance of that concept...

Proposition Paper

...Dear Reader, The issue I want to problematize in my essay is how an apprenticeship is better than going to college and getting a degree. In deep thought I ponder this just about every day, and it seems to me through my eighteen years of life that going to college is a waste of time. Why should I be putting myself in debt to obtain a piece of paper that says I know what I’m doing now? Because Bureau of labor statics says that if I don’t get a college education I have a lower percent chance of getting hired and making a lot of money. My father once gave an example on this topic that really opened my eyes. He said that there were two people applying for an automotive repair man. One man had a degree in repairing cars but never actually worked on one and the other had been working on cars his whole life but did not have a degree. The employer had to make a decision between the two and chose the guy with the college degree. Now, when work began he didn’t actually know how to fix a car, he only knew the definitions and terms associated with it, so he had to be trained. So you have a higher chance of being hired with a college education but are we learning what we specifically need to do so we are prepared for on the job work in college? This leads me to my most complex question, how are we going to move from the traditional education system (college) to on the job training (apprenticeship). The first source I have in mind is an article about a student getting a physics problem wrong...

Liberal Arts Education

...The Bright Side of a Liberal Arts Education Now that I am in college, I have pondered upon whether a liberal arts education is better than a vocational education; a topic that did not cross my mind in high school. A liberal arts curriculum includes the studies intended to primarily provide general knowledge such as language, philosophy, literature, and abstract science and to develop general intellectual capacities, such as reason and judgment, as opposed to professional or vocational skills (merriam-webster.com).  As students wanting to achieve a higher education, we have to think about what we want for ourselves. Either you want to grow as an individual and obtain a major in whichever field you chose, or just learn what best interests you. People have many misconceptions toward what the liberal arts are and how they can benefit you. We often hear things like, “A liberal arts degree will not get you a real job.” or “A liberal arts degree is a luxury not a necessity.” Although this is what the majority of the people who are not aware about the actual facts say, this is not true. An examination of, The New Liberal Arts by author Sanford J. Ungar, and Are Too Many People Going to College? by author Charles Murray, will reveal to us why one gains more knowledge at a liberal arts school. Murray argues that a liberal arts education is only for the elite, but I believe that they shouldn't be the only ones to attend because my vision of a liberal arts college is one where all students...

Persuasive Essay

...Persuasive Essay Why I chose to attend WGU Western Governors University LAE1 August 15, 2013 I have chosen to write my essay on why I decided to attend Western Governors University and why I would recommend everyone to do the same. Before I came to Western Governors University, I attended a different online based school that is high profile around the United States. While attending this school I experienced a bit of instability and more of a sales environment than a caring university. For example, the enrollment adviser was very helpful and professional at first. But, after I was officially enrolled and they had received my payment for tuition, it was nearly impossible to reach this individual. Another example of this is the amount of turnover that the university had in its executive office and our department chair. Our business department chair was replaced four times in a matter of twelve months. The cost of this university was also ridiculous, it was approximately four hundred dollars per credit hour, which is extremely expensive. This university was accredited regionally and was well known. After experiencing the salesmanship and instability I started to research other schools that were regionally accredited and had positive reviews. While searching I stumbled upon Western Governors University. After reading just a few facts and reviews, I had already made up my mind to switch. The first factor that really caught my...

The Value of Education

...110 17 February 2015 The Value of Education In her essay “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” author Caroline Bird postulates monetary and social reasoning for why obtaining a college degree is a waste for many students. According to Bird, college has a miniscule value and effect on people and society, and is indeed a waste of time and money. She suggests many students are only in pursuit of a higher education because they lack societal value and purpose after graduating high school, resulting in them feeling obligated to go to college in hopes of obtaining structure and a high paying job. Unlike Bird, I believe a college degree holds a lifetime of abundant benefits. It is our duty as a society to push the value and credibility of higher education, as it can open many doors one couldn’t possibly achieve without some sort of earned credibility or degree. In “College is a Waste of Time and Money,” Bird tells us while lecturing across US college campuses, she came to realize that many students aren’t in school because they want to learn, but more so because they felt obligated to attend since they are not highly valued in our society. She suggests young adults go to college for several different reasons; some may go with a genuine interest in learning, some may go in order to get away from home, yet still be supported by their parents and taxpayers, but most go because it’s the ‘normal’ thing to do. For the most part, I agree that young people go to college because it is what...

...I often envision myself as a successful Lawyer and opening a law firm where I can help others especially victims of crimes, but to achieve these goals I must be educated. College education is important to me because it is the foundation of having a successful career in life; it gives a better understanding and knowledge of this world. College education not only helps me intellectually it also shapes me personally and socially. Furthering ones education prepares you for a better future, opening doors of opportunities for a better quality of life. Growing up as a child I was always reminded by my caregivers and teachers that education is the key to success. According to Malcolm X, a civil right activist “Without education you are not going anywhere in this world.” I used to think that doing well in school and getting good grades was for the benefits of my teachers and to escape the punishment that comes with failing grades. It was when I was getting prepared to leave the secure comforting gates of high school that I started to comprehend the importance of being educated and furthering my education; not for others but for myself, I can reminisce on my professors, school subjects, the late nights studying and the anxiety of upcoming exams and the stress which helped me to be a more responsible individual and a better scholar. During my high school years I often wondered why it would be important for me to further my education. Did I need to acquire a degree in order to be successful...

Code of Conduct for Pharmacy Students ; Yay or Nay?

...Pharmacy students, upon entering their institutions, have to abide by a code of conduct usually higher than other students following a different career path. Students specialising in law, marketing or accounting do not have to maintain the high standard of professionalism that pharmacy students have to demonstrate whilst in school. Students have deemed this set of rules unfair and professionals insist that it has to be maintained in order to fully understand the grasp of pharmacy as a profession. Personally, I understand the need to abide by these rules but also agree with other students that is not necessarily fair. The profession, pharmacy, deals with lives. The three most important aspect of pharmacy are quality, safety and efficacy of medicines and these in turn help to save patients’ lives, to improve their health and to manage chronic diseases while at the same time maximising the comfort of the patient. It is important to demonstrate a degree of professionalism for patients to ensure their lives in our care. This level of competence can only be exhibited upon entering the profession if students are taught right from day one. It improves the chances of perfecting skills that have been taught and instilled from college and therefore of providing better services to the patients. As future pharmacists, pharmacy students have to assume the role and learn to behave in an appropriate manner that is respectful to both the profession and colleagues. A pharmacist or even a pharmacy...
