I would have less time to relax. It would mean that teachers would have more hours that they have to work and take out of their day. It would also mean more stress and struggle for me and other students or teachers.
If they added more time to school, many other students and I would have less time to relax. I will have less time to enjoy myself after a hard school day. Other students and I might have more homework and other work. I would have less time with my family and friends.

Why Is It Important To Have School Hours

...likes school, and having an extra hour and a half added to the school day is something the school board is considering. The school board wants to add extra time to the school day, but is that a good idea? I believe that adding extra time to the school day is not a great idea at all because students have social lives and after school activities that are important, teachers need time to plan the classes, and students need sleep, especially if they are expected to perform well in school. First off, adding that hour and a half takes away from students social lives and after school activities, such as sports or clubs. If students don't have time to do anything after school that could affect their attendance or even their mood. Additionally, based upon the Spotsylvania middle schools, students start school...

School Should Start Later

...Why We Need More Sleep Don't you hate waking up early in the morning? Almost every weekday, high school students are waking up around six o'clock in the morning to get ready for school, some even earlier. It's not practical for high school classes to start at 7:44. It's just too early for teenage minds to function properly. Our school should start at least an hour later than that. With the extra hour, our attendance would improve, as well as our grades and attitudes. The facts are all there, so why shouldn't the hours change? On average in today’s society most teens don’t like going to school that early in the morning. To have to wake up so early when they only get about seven hours of sleep, to have students be coming into school at 7:30AM or maybe even earlier in some other schools, is not right. Students need to have time at night to get work done, not only schoolwork but also non-schoolwork. Needless to say, the school schedule for high school students needs to be changed and be made where they go in later. That way they get their work done and get enough sleep because without much sleep students will not be getting high grades. A health survey that the University Health Center administered showed them that one in four students say that lack of sleep has affected their academic performance in a bad way (“Sleep Rocks”). Sleep deprivation impairs students’ ability to be alert, pay attention, solve problems, cope with stress, and retain information. Academic performances on...

Why High School Should Start Later

...and Your Grades Will Be Greater High school is a part of every teenager’s life whether they like it or not. Although it is not a requirement; most, if not all, teenagers will experience at least one year of high school. With the experience of high school, students will also go through waking up early sometimes at five or six a.m. The starting time of high schools has been highly debated for several years. Those who debate this topic usually dispute on whether or not changing the time would be beneficial. Psychologists estimate that as many as 30% of children may have a sleep disorder at some point during childhood. Sleep disorders have implications both for social-emotional adjustment and for school performance. For this reason it is important for both parents and educators to understand how sleep works and how disruptions in normal sleep patterns can affect children and teenagers. Starting school just a half an hour later would benefit the most families and students, and also to accommodate for teens' sleep needs. One of the main beneficial topics to argue for starting school later is attendance. Schools should start later because it is proven that students will have higher attendance. If students can get more sleep, they are more likely to attend school on a regular basis. Studies have shown that after puberty, teenagers require more sleep, around nine and a half hours, and are getting less than needed, around seven hours. Mary Carskadon of Brown University performed...

...Effects of Sleep: How does sleep affect your academic performance? Sleep is an important part of our daily lives and the amount of sleep we receive each day affects a number of different parts in our lives which makes sleeping such a vital part of a person’s life. This is why I am so interested in this topic about how sleep affects your performance in school positively or negatively. “An area that researchers study is the impact that a lack of adequate sleep has on learning and memory. When we are sleep deprived, our focus, attention, and vigilance drift, making it more difficult to receive information” (Harvard University, 2008). Sleep plays such an important role in learning because if you are not getting a good amount a sleep, you won’t have the energy needed to possess the information that you are being taught because your brain didn’t receive the proper amount of rest to help it function at its best. “Without adequate sleep and rest, over-worked neurons can no longer function to coordinate information properly, and we lose our ability to access previously learned information” (Harvard University, 2008). Getting enough sleep every day is important because it affects your daily life in so many different ways that causes your academic performance to slip as well. The effect of sleep on academic performance affects college students the hardest. “Many students believe that it is a rite of passage to stay up all night during college and it’s kind of fun” (Yahalom, 2007). “But...

By starting school later we, students, can have time to get ready, we will be in a positive mood based on a soundly sleep, and we will have time to eat breakfast. Getting ready is important to some students. Some wake up around 5am - 6am to fix their hair or to put on makeup. With more time we can get to class early. ...Period 8 English Honors Persuasive Essay Students attend school everyday of the week and stay there for many hours. School should start later on in the morning. It should start later because kids would be more awake and willing to learn, students in Paramus Catholic have to travel far distances every morning, and it allows kids to get a couple more hours of sleep. If school started later, mornings for students and parents would be less stressful because there wouldn’t be as much of a rush. Paramus Catholic starts at 7:45 A.M. That is very early in the morning. Most students are not fully woken up yet when they start learning. How are kids supposed to be asked to complete an algebra or history test that early in the morning when their brains aren’t fully functioning? Students would be more willing to learn because they won’t be in a grumpy mood. They’ll be awake and the teachers can get more accomplished. Paramus Catholic Regional High School consists of students from 120 different towns. Students who live a half hour or even an hour away have to wake up extremely early just to get to school on time. Some student’s have to take the public bus. The students at Paramus Catholic get dismissed very early. Why School Should Start Later Essay

...to stay at school? What if you have to stay for tutorial or sport practice? Even though going to school later seems cool, the time of school is right where it is supposed to be. Later times in school results in tired students and unnecessarily late dismal times. School is scheduled strategically for the wellbeing of students and the staff, so changing the time will have several consequences. Early is on time, and on time is late. With school times being later, students will be more lax and less focused on the lesson. Therefore, school should not be held at a later time. This is necessary because students will be able to have more time after school to complete tasks and do their hobbies. In addition, students who come out of school earlier, are happier than those who have to arrive and stay at school longer. Furthermore, it is scientifically proven that early times have little to no effect on the academics of a student. Finally, while starting school later gives students more time to sleep, it ultimately can cause a large disruption in the schedule of parents and transportation. There are several...

Article Summary: Why School Should Start Later

...First of all, schools should start later because kids would get more sleep. In the article “Why School Should Start Later In the Morning” By Emily Richmond it states that “Getting enough sleep is important for students health, safety, and academic performance states Anne Wheaton, the lead author and epidemiologist in the CDC division of population health.” Not only would kids be getting more sleep for their health, they wouldn’t be cranky in the morning . This matters because when kids are cranky to their teachers, the teachers don’t like it because their jobs are already hard enough and if schools started later I am sure teachers would appreciate it as much as or even more than students. Additionally, in the article “Pediatricians Say School Should Start Later for Teens Health” by Nancy Shute it states that “Doctors say that 15% of high schools start 8:30 a.m. or later and that 40% start before 8:00 a.m.” Imagine getting...

Why High School Should Start Later

...High school is a very important time in teenager's lives. They have many things going on and important decisions to make. I know this because I'm a teenager. To start an hour later would be great, but at the same time would cause too many problems. That is why I believe high school shouldn't start an hour later. However, starting school at our normal time is harming students. According to sleep experts, "[t]ypical sleep cycles begin around 11 PM for teenagers and continue through 8 AM "(Start School Later, Inc). This means that students only get around six or seven hours of sleep per school night and wakes students up in the middle of deep sleep. In contrast, parents oppose teens to start later. Mary Carskadon, a professor of psychiatry and human behavior stated, "parents are often reluctant to have teens start later, because they rely on having older children at home in the afternoons to take care of their younger siblings "(Richmond). This is because many...

Benefits Of Eliminating After School Sports

...Many people have different beliefs about whether schools should keep sports, or not. Numerous articles say that physical activity in districts will need to go because of students grades. Therefore, schools should eliminate sports because it would save money, more personal time, and improve the academic achievements of students. Eliminating after school sports can cut down big costs because many parents waste more money on school sports than other things. Amanda Ripley states in the article that “new bleachers can cost half a million dollars” (10). The article also says that “maintaining a grass field can cost more than $20,000 a year” by Amanda Ripley (10). In addition, Amanda Ripley had said “distraction, however, may be the greatest...
