Zombies! What Now? The drive of survival is an instinct that is deeply imbedded in human nature. Without that drive, humans would of became instinct; instead, humans decided to evolve and become self sufficient. Currently, today’s society needs guidance, for they rely on technology. Society isn’t always ready for a disaster, especially one that seems impractical. Like any other survival plan, being prepared, planning ahead and knowing what you are doing are key factors in survival. With the right knowledge, preparation and tools, humanity is completely capable of surviving a zombie apocalypse. Being prepared is a key factor to survival, and for many, forgetfulness and procrastination are the main reasons why they are not. The first step of being prepared is to know the surroundings of the area; whether its work, school, home, or a friend’s house, know the entries and exit ways of each setting and determine which the safest route is. This is important because being chased by a zombie can be distracting, confusing and horrifying all at once and can end horribly wrong; therefore, the need to know which way to go quickly and efficiently is important. Having a list of close friends, co-workers, family or neighbors is part of preparation as well, this is essential in survival because the knowledge base of a group is greater.”It is better to find people for your group that you already know have mental stability” (Brooks 91). Knowing which skills and knowledge each individual has and assigning them a duty will help keep the organization and effectiveness of group survival. If at all possible learn ahead or gather people with navigation, combat and outdoor survival skills. According to the CDC,” Families can cope with disaster by preparing in advance and working together as a team. Create a family disaster plan including a communication plan, disaster supplies kit, and an evacuation plan. Knowing what to do is your best protection and your responsibility.” Having groups of 3-10 is the best way to be under the radar of the zombies and be able to move quickly and efficiently. Time management within the group will be important when packing supplies up when on the move; certain situations will arise when the group has to pack up quickly. Having emergency pack ready to go prior to the zombie attack would be best when moving destinations quickly, but if not, here are essential items; backpack, water bottles with purification tabs or iodine, non perishable foods or already dehydrated food preferably” lean meats, vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds and healthy fats”(Senge 22), efficient foot gear, one change of comfortable and moveable clothing, poncho, first aid kit with some medications (anti-inflammatory, pain, anti biotic, Benadryl), map preferably detailed, compass, knives of all sizes if applicable, matches or magnesium stick, and a radio or walkie talkie for your group. If this kit is kept in an easy accessible place it’s easier to grab and go when on the run. Once a group and emergency kit is established, a plan is needed. The plan needs to involve where to go, type of shelter, when to travel, and distance of route of the destination. “Mobility, not firepower, is your best defense. Be prepared to run at a moment's notice. Never pack more than you can run with. Never unpack all your gear at once.”(Brooks 98). The best destination for zombie survival is that with a low population preferably in a country setting, up on a hill to have the high ground advantage. Having a vehicle is a bonus, but keep in mind that gasoline will eventually run out and backup transportation is needed. If a vehicle is accessible along with gasoline a large SUV is efficient to hold a group and supplies, while being able to go across many types of terrain. Once the secure location is determined, plan multiple routes and expect road blocks from multiple cars, debris and zombies. Try to stay away from main freeways, highways and inner city routes. The next step is surviving and defending the group, until the secure location is approachable and clear of zombies. Have each member of the group use all their senses to determine if the location is secure, never go investigate noises, or go anywhere alone. As soon as it’s determined that the location is zombie free, for the time being, set up the perimeter, lock or block all exits and entries and make an escape plan. The group needs to set up a schedule for sleep, search for water, food and weapon maintenance. This is where the skills from each person come in handy. Make sure peace is maintained within the group, stability of the group is a prime factor in surviving.” keeping a positive mental attitude is essential. Find the natural entertainer in your group” (Brooks 91).Once each day goes by the group will maintain a set routine and hopefully become more and more sufficient at outdoor survival, food storing and water gathering. If there is someone within the group with combat background and navigation have them teach everyone all the skills as well as maintaining weapons and hand to hand combat, not only for the zombies but for other scavengers as well. Being prepared with planning ahead, knowing what you are doing and where you are going is like any other survival plan and are the key factors in survival. Plan ahead by knowing your surroundings, exit strategies and resources provided in your area. Make a plan and involve close family, friends and neighbors. Know which routes are the best and have a couple destinations already in mind, knowing you need a field of sight and structure preferably on a hill with low or minimal population. Expect road blocks literally and figuratively and be prepared for anything. These are the basics of surviving a zombie infestation, keep learning, keep positive, stay alive and always be prepared. Now mentally take in the information and get audacious.
