During the Renaissance period a poem written by Torquato Tasso entitled Gerusalemme Liberata (The Liberation of Jerusalem) was very popular and inspired many composers including Haydn, Gluck and Handel to orchestrate their operas according to the text. Armida, the name of the opera, was devised differently by Rossini compared to his other cohorts. According to David J. Baker, the author of the essay Magic Time, theorized that Rossini wrote his music to cater and focus on the talents of Isabella Colbran. Italy was heading toward realism during the nineteenth century and the script involved in Armida was contradictory toward this style. This type of writing was unconventional to Rossini’s previous 37 works and included collaboration with a librettist by the name of Giovanni Schmidt whom was not recognized in history as being an ideal candidate to work with. Rossini manages to not only showcase Ms. Colbrans talents but transform the theme of a battle between good and evil to that of a love story. David compares Rossini‘s opera to other composers who wrote music for this work, to illustrate and offer proof of his theory.
Rossini’s Armida was first introduced to the public in November 1817 and was showcased at the Teatro San Carlo of Naples . The stories synopsis begins with Rinauldo the Christian crusader, and his army mourning the loss of their leader in battle. The men are confronted by Armida, a pagan sorceress, who plans to overtake and control their army with the assistance of her Uncle Iradot, who is the King of Damascus. Rinauldo is overtaken by Armida’s beauty and becomes powerless to her seduction. He leaves his honor with the crusaders and joins her blindly in a “garden” of enchantment, where he loses his true sense of self. Armida unwillingly falls for Rinauldo and vows vengeance when he realizes the person he has become through his reflection and rejoins the crusaders.
Mr. Baker points out certain clues that support his theory about Rossini’s affinity to Colburn. For starters, Isabella and Rossini were married five years after the premier of Armida. David mentions that there are reports that record their romance occurring during this time period, but he does not substantiate this information in his essay. Secondly, the autographed score of Rossini bears an inscription of the name Isabella in the margin beside the conclusion of the “Primo Finale” in Act I. Pesaro editors believe that this was done by Mrs. Colbran. They theorize she may have been sitting across from the piano as he composed, because the inscription is written upside down. Rossini had already written a work exclusively for her entitled Elisabetta two years earlier while she was still the mistress to the director of the Teatro San Carlo region, tycoon Domenico Barnaia. David points out that the music that is written for Colbran appears to happen at a time when Rossini is highly motivated. Composers such as Lully and Gluck spend little emphasis on the love between Rinauldo and Armida with their version occurring briefly at the end. Rossini’s male characters all sing with tenor voices including Armida’s love Rinauldo. What sets him apart from the others is accomplished by the transformations in his idyll. Armida’s character is the only female. Her role is accentuated by Rossini’s choice of coloratura in her role including her ability in vocal range and seductive qualities. This contrast adds more focal point to that of the female characters role. Additionally Rossini includes a theme and variations, D’ Amore al dolce impero, which increases the length of the opera. According to Rossini Foundation editors, his choice of introducing the powerful love duet in Act I, lays the foundation for orchestrating a musical work more based on love rather than mystical themes. He also adds that this type of strategy allows for Isabel’s presence throughout the entire opera.
David’s arguments are compelling, but the sources for his material are not substantiated by actual facts, only theories. References that include the title of the music would be ideal, such as the mention of the love duet that occurs in Act I.
David’s essay and his philosophy on Rossini’s personal feelings toward his lead character Isabel Colburn in the opera Armida are very compelling. The idea that he orchestrated his entire opera to accentuate and focus her talents alone displays that he had to have a considerable amount of feelings toward her, or at least admired her talents. He also adds a theme and variation to the work that is not evident in any of the previous operas that were written by prior composers of this piece. Rossini tackles a theme that is uncharacteristic to any of his previous works and follows a style that is more characteristic of a how the French composed their operas. Even though the relationship between the two of them eventually blossoms five years after the premiere of Armida I would have liked to see more evidence to base his theory.

The museum had some nice works from the Medieval, and Renaissance period 14th-century Burgundian Virgin and Child carved of limestone and Titian’s sublime Portrait of a Gentleman (1561). Much of this European art collection was formed by generous Baltimoreans, notably Mary Frick Jacobs, George A. Lucas, and Jacob Epstein. Summary Of The Documentary Latino Americans: Pride And Prejudice

...The documentary Latino Americans: Pride and Prejudice revolves around the civil rights movement of chicano Americans. The documentary describes societal issues concerning hispanics in the mid 20th century and how the chicano community worked to overcome the injustice set upon them. The documentary describes a program instated during WWII called the Bracero program which allowed for hispanic laborers to immigrate to the U.S. for work that involved manual labor. These chicano laborers were a very integral part of the economy and daily life in the United States as they were the backbone of agriculture and manual labor. These people were treated as second class citizens as they were subjected to segregation laws which prohibited them from practicing...

Tenement Housing Problem

...to furnish loans for home mortgages and repairs today” were stated (Rothstein, 2017, pg. 199). The textbook, however, did not mention how the HOLC divided urban neighborhoods by race so that African-Americans would have a greater difficulty when applying to mortgages. Neither did it mention how the FHA suburbanized the entire nation on a whites-only bias or how the New Deal agencies established lower wages for African-Americans. Lastly, it did not mention how residential segregation was imposed by the government's public housing projects. The information given in this chapter correlates to the article A Critical Race Analysis of Latina/o and African American Advanced Placement Enrollment in Public High Schools by Daniel G. Solorzano and Armida Ornelas. In both pieces, the decreasing number of white students can be seen. This is primarily due to the white flight of moving to suburban neighborhoods. Both African-Americans and Latinos have been affected by racially systematic schooling. Even while there are empty seats at a predominately white school, the school’s administration will not let a minority take a spot. Overall, due to the wave of ethnic minorities immigrating to the United States and the clustering of minorities already set in the United States, having the knowledge of diverse settings would help those individuals out. ...

...Designing a Reward System Kendra Silver HSM/220 December 15, 2013 Armida Molina Designing a Reward System A reward system offer employees incentive to effectively and efficiently perform on the job. Every company needs a strategic reward system for employees that address certain areas such as compensation, benefits, recognition and appreciation. This can help motivate employees in performing better and going above and beyond the minimum requirements. There are nine major factors that motivate employees to perform their job effectively. These nine factors are respect for me as a person, good pay, chance to turn out quality work, chance for promotion, opportunity to do interesting work, feeling my job is important, being told my boss when I do a good job, opportunity for self-development and improvement, and large amount of freedom on the job. When creating a reward system these factors should be considered. “The relationship among organizational structure, employee satisfaction and motivation can be explained jointly by the characteristics of the jobs and by the attributes of the individuals employed (Oldham and Hackman, 1981). Some other studies also support the notion that characteristics of the job have direct impact on the work outcomes (e.g., Champoux, 1991; Bhuian and Mengue, 2002; Thomas et al, 2004; and Garg and Rastogi, 2006). Loher et al. (1985) concluded that there is a significant relationship between job characteristics and job satisfaction. In a study...

As I casually browsed the Freer Gallery, the beautifully decorated image of Buddha caught my attention. Also, on display were other masterpieces of Mughal and Rajput paintings along with richly decorated court arts and daggers used by Mughal emperors. I can clearly relate to this period of history because I am of Indian descent and also practice Hindu religion. I am well aware of this particular aspect of art and culture that we have covered during this course. During The Chola dynasty, the Hindu god known as Siva Nataraja (Lord of the Dance) was the perfect embodiment of Chola beauty. The Chola dynasty was one of the most dominant artistic, religious and political forces in south India from the ninth through the thirteenth century. Siva Nataraj was portrayed as the family diety because he was always seen with his consort Uma and their elephant headed son Ganesha, often referred to as the remover of all obstacles. According to the...

Capital Punishment

...Capital Punishment Capital punishment is defined as, “the use of the death penalty to punish wrongdoers for certain crimes” (Gaines & Miller, p. 269). This type of punishment is the ultimate consequence for the most heinous crimes, and one of the greatest controversial topics in the criminal justice system. Some believe that this penalty is not only barbaric, cruel and unusual, but argue that the average cost per execution is extraordinary, totaling multi-millions of dollars. Quite a few death row inmates, that are previously found guilty for capital crimes, are later found innocent and released from prison. Supporters of the death penalty believe in the concept of “an eye for an eye” or in Bill Maher’s words, “capital punishment works great. Every killer you kill never kills again.” Critics in the United States of America, as a civilized society that it is, believe that the most violent, atrocious, habitual offenders known to man receive a cruel and unusual punishment with inflicted “unnecessary pain” from execution by lethal injection. The injection is administered in a three-drug “cocktail”: the sedative, the paralytic, and finally the drug to stop the heart. After the sedative takes effect, the body’s sense of pain is deadened, subsequently leading to an easy, painless death. I don’t know what could possibly constitute a more humane or peaceful death than that of the widely used lethal injection to carry out an execution sentence. There are alternate methods...

Diversity Awareness

...Diversity Awareness at ABC Corporation Situational background ABC Corporation is a fictional advertising agency. Following many years of highly successful advertising campaigns, market growth and staffing expansion, ABC has come under attack by various ethnic groups and the business community for a lack of sensitivity in some broadcast and print advertising. The leadership team is concerned about the consequences of this backlash to our clients’ satisfaction and retention and to our revenue stream. It was evident to the leaders attending last month’s leadership meeting that the source of this problem ran deeply through the organization. The leadership team is highly diverse in ethic and national origins, language skills, background and experience. The employees reflect a similar high level of diversity. What currents are directing our projects into insensitive waters? The leadership team appointed three of its members, Robert, Pat and Paul to investigate the source of the troubled waters; to bring some clarity to the analysis, “why are we not fully leveraging the diversity of our workforce?” The investigative team is to report its findings in one month, at the following leadership team meeting. The investigative team interviewed employees and administered surveys to assess possible causes of the problem. They met to analyze and interpret the data and to prepare a presentation to the leadership team. Findings The investigative team discovered that two advertisements...

Education and Income Inequality: a Meta-Regression Analysis

...Education and Income Inequality: A Meta-Regression Analysis Abdul Jabbar Abdullah* Hristos Doucouliagos Elizabeth Manning - FIRST DRAFT - Please do not quote without permission from the authors September 2011 Abstract This paper revisits the literature that investigates the effects of education on inequality. Specifically, the paper provides a comprehensive quantitative review of the extant econometrics literature through a meta-regression analysis of 64 empirical studies that collectively report 868 estimates of the effects of education on inequality. We find that education affects the two tails of the distribution of incomes; it reduces the income share of top earners and increases the share of the bottom earners, but has no effect on the share of the middle class. Inequality in education widens income inequality. Education has a larger negative effect on inequality in Africa. The heterogeneity in reported estimates can be largely explained by differences in the specification of the econometric model. Financial reforms commenced in late 1970s were the main driving force of those changes. The reforms aimed to enhance both the productivity and efficiency and the degree of competition of banking market as a way of improving overall operational performance of the financial services sector in Sri Lanka. This paper reviewed how the banks’ efficiency and market structure affect the overall performance of the banking firms measured in terms of profitability and net interest margin using structure conduct performance literature.
