...Daniel Harting Period Five April 14, 2011 “Song of the River”: Literary Analysis In the poem “Song of the River” William Randolph Hearst uses rhyme scheme, alliteration, and imagery to illustrate his overall idea of the relationship between the cycle of life and the course of a river. He uses such devices to express the revolving cycles of a river and how its life span and rebirth correlates with life, death, and afterlife. The rhyme scheme the author creates in the poem has a rhythm which mimics the flow of life and a river. Throughout the poem Hearst describes the cycle of a river and then describes the cycle of life. He then incorporates a rhyme scheme which flows nonstop from start to finish. Within this scheme lies the evolving message in which Hearst is illustrating. The rhyme scheme also relates closely to the tone of the poem which is a peaceful calm tone following the movement of water into its rebirth and the transition of one’s life into the afterlife. Hearst creates the quotation “and the river flows to the sea, and the water again goes back in rain to the hills where is used to be” in order to demonstrate and clearly express the flow of a river to the sea using both rhyme scheme and tone. ...How does the language of this poem reveal the writer’s attitude to planners and city planning? In this poem the writer conveys to the reader about her feelings towards cities and planners in the language she uses in the poem. Atwood starts the poem off in a calming a slow paced tone. The work “cruising” shows this as it is a calm and relaxed word. The poet had lured the readers into a false sense of security because after the first two lines the calm tone changes completely. “What offends us is” is the turning point in the poem it shows that it is not really the positive poem that we hoped it to be. Also the word “offends” is very strong and emotive it makes the reader feel like the place has done something wrong or horrible. Please Don’t Take My Air Jordans is written with stressed and unstressed syllables, which are clearly shown when reading aloud. For example: “my air jordans cost a hundred with tax my suede starters jacket says raiders on the back i'm stylin . . . smilin . . . lookin real mean cuz it ain't about bein heard just bein seen” (Reg, 1-4) Without looking at Lemon’s performance, the readers can find some of the words that are stressed usually enhance the name of an object, or the action of the character in the poem. Words that are highlighted are examples with easy recognized stressed syllables. However, it is quite different in Lemon’s performance. He only stresses on the words styling, smiling, and looking since they enhance the character’s action of showing himself/herself that he/she is happy. In my opinion this poem keeps you in suspense and on the edge of your seat. By being a first tine reader I found it very obvious that Frost regretted his decision of path he chose. Robert and his friend would often take walks through the countryside. He would always choose the path that he thought would have more interest and would show him a better time.
