“The sun loved the moon so much he died every night to let her breathe,” stated anonymous who is said to have conceived this quote about sacrifice for the beloved from an old folktale, Why the Sun Chases the Moon. Famous writers, poets, musicians, and artists throughout time have been enraptured by the idea of sacrificing for someone you love, Carol Riftka Brunt is no exception to his seemingly immortal idea. In Brunt’s novel, Tell the Wolves I’m Home, introverted, teenage girl, June learns of the sacrifices people make. She learns of the sacrifice not only her terminally ill uncle makes, but also those made by his boyfriend who is shunned by the family, and herself after being deceived by her mother. Finn was a vital part of June’s reality, but Finn’s time with June is cut short when he dies of AIDS. Danni, June’s mother, whom is jealous of Toby, falsely accuses Toby of purposely killing Finn. When given the ultimatum of either keeping his boyfriend or his sister as a part of his life, Finn compromised for being able to see his niece's but not allowing them to know of Toby’s existence. His choice causes a strain on his relationship not only with his jealous, overbearing sister, but also his boyfriend whom has to hide for days on end when his beloved’s family comes to visit. “Finn hid his secret boyfriend in the basement? I might have felt sorry for Toby if the place wasn’t so beautiful. If it wasn’t so completely obvious that a person would only make someplace like this for someone they really loved. I thought of all the times I’d been upstairs in the apartment, and now those memories were getting mixed up with the picture of Toby skulking around down here. Right underneath me all the time. . . .
