...reasoning about the natural world is the art that lies at the base of science” (Castel and Sismondo 55). Pure logic is “a form of reasoning conducted or assessed according to strict principles of validity” (Oxford Dictionaries). In contrast, scientific logic is a form of reasoning in which a logical thought process is used to conduct experiments and research in order to reach a valid conclusion. Altogether, pure and scientific logic are different forms of reasoning used to solve everyday problems in life; yet, it is ‘scientific logic’ that is more prevalent in solving everyday problems, including critical interpretations of major problems on earth. Scientific logic is the best choice to cope with life problems in the midst of global issues; it helps facilitate our logical expertise in daily matters; it is both predictable and reliable; and on a greater scale, scientific logic helps us deal with the widespread problems on earth. With the growth of science and new emerging technologies, life is becoming more complicated, therefore relying purely on logic is insufficient. “Most of the time very little follows logically from what we know, and when we think that it does we learn that most of our knowledge consists of generalizations that don’t hold 100 percent of the time” (Castel and Sismondo 71). People live in a world of probability and because “scientific reasoning develops over time,” (Castel and Sismondo 74) they are more inclined to apply this approach towards greater decision-making...

...Introduction Nearly everywhere around the world you cannot go out in public without someone seeing some texting, using laptop, tablets, listening to I-pods etc… it is a driving factor in globalisation. Since the early 90’s it has increased rapidly. Information communication technologies (ICT’s) have given new opportunities in businesses, governments& personal use. Most industries nowadays these day rely on ICT’s and even governments use them in warfare and surveillances. There has been a revolution in computers and communications over the last few decades. All indications of this has pointed to it continuing at a very fast pace. They present many opportunities but also challenges. These are having large effects on many aspects of society, with policy makers tackling issues which involve economic productivity, intellectual property rights, protection of privacy and the costs of access to information. The policies which are implemented now must be considered carefully as the social and economic impacts of these choices will be long-lasting.(Konsbruck,R) Technology cannot solve social problems, but the use of information technology and communication technologies are vital for the economic and social development of the modern world. They can be considered as the functional equivalent of what electricity was in the industrial age. The 1990’s saw the world become organised around computer networks which is at the heart of information...

...The twentieth century was marked by genocides on an monstrous scale. One of the most terrible was the Holocaust wrought by Nazi Germany, which killed an estimated six million European Jews and almost as many other victims. During this dark time, the Catholic Church was shepherded by Pope Pius XII, who proved himself an untiring foe of the Nazis, determined to save as many Jewish lives as he could. Yet today Pius XII gets almost no credit for his actions before or during the war. Anti-Catholic author Dave Hunt writes, "The Vatican had no excuse for its Nazi partnership or for its continued commendation of Hitler on the one hand and its thunderous silence regarding the Jewish question on the other hand. . . . [The popes] continued in the alliance with Hitler until the end of the war, reaping hundreds of millions of dollars in payments from the Nazi government to the Vatican."[1] Jack Chick, infamous for his anti-Catholic comic books, tells us in Smokescreens, "When World War II ended, the Vatican had egg all over its face. Pope Pius XII, after building the Nazi war machine, saw Hitler losing his battle against Russia, and he immediately jumped to the other side when he saw the handwriting on the wall. . . . Pope Pius XII should have stood before the judges in Nuremberg. His war crimes were worthy of death."[2] One is tempted simply to dismiss these accusations, so wildly out of touch with reality, as the deluded ravings of persons with no sense of historical truth...

...Using material form Item A and elsewhere, assess the view that the growth of religious fundamentalism is a reaction to globalisation The view that the growth of religious fundamentalism is a reaction can be seen as true. The issue of religious fundamentalism has emerged as a major area of media and political concern in recent decades. Fundamentalism is religion based on an unquestioning belief in the literal truth of a scared text. Giddens, argues that fundamentalists are traditionalists who seek to return to the basics or fundamentals of their faith. They believe in the literal truth of scripture and that it provides answers to all life’s important questions, from politics to family life. Fundamentalists believe theirs is the only true view of the world. They refuse to engage in dialogue with others, they justify their views by reference to dogma and scare texts rather than rational arguments. Giddens notes that the term ‘fundamentalism’ is a relatively new one and he its growth as a product of and reaction to globalisation. However, Cosmopolitanism contrasts with fundamentalism. Cosmopolitanism is tolerant of the views of others and open to new ideas. Moreover, Giddens sees fundamentalism as the enemy of cosmopolitanism religion and spirituality. Religion, however, as argued by Bruce is used as cultural defence. This is where religion serves to unite a community against an external threat. Religion has special significance for its followers because it symbolises the...

...“Instead of being on the defensive, I would be on the offensive”: General Sherman’s March through Georgia 1 The United States Civil War was the bloodiest and most trying conflict in American history. Hundreds of thousands of American lives were lost on both sides of the war. General William Tecumseh Sherman’s march through Georgia to the sea was a brilliant strategic victory for the North that helped to end the war more quickly, all while preserving the lives of soldiers on both the North and South. All though his march was outside the general practice of warfare it is clear that the General’s movement through Georgia was the best course he could have taken given his circumstances. His capture of Atlanta and his subsequent march to follow is one of the most controversial issues of the war. At the time of the war it was commonplace for the military leaders to embed their troops in entrenchments that were nearly impossible to infiltrate. They would then rush their men towards each other in a bloody battle. General Sherman realized that attacking the entrenchments of the enemy was fruitless and killed too many soldiers. He went on a path of flanking maneuvers that helped get around these entrenched soldiers. He followed up this plan by attacking the economy of the South and breaking their resolve. The importance of his new plan can be seen on how his tactics of attacking the land and economy, instead of other human beings, and avoiding head-on confrontation actually...

...Jaclyn Castel MNGT 5590 Case 10.1: Electrolux Cleans Up 1. How did Electrolux Chief Executive Straberg break down barriers (and increase communication) between departments? Why did he do this? Explain Straberg began breaking down barriers between the departments and forcing his designers, engineers, and marketers to work together to come up with new products. He recruited executives from companies with strong track records in innovation, including Procter & Gamble (P&G) and PepsiCo. Brainstorming sessions were carried on by Kim Scott, a recent P&G defector, in the following way, “she urged everyone ‘to think of themselves as Catherin.’” Chief Executive Straberg brought together departments which are rarely placed together to produce ideas/products. As Fucco, employee for Electrolux’s fabric care research and development center in Porcia, Italy, stated, “We never used to create new products together…The new way saves time and money by avoiding the technical glitches that crop up as a new design moves from the drafting table to the factory floor.” The illustration described in the previous paragraph is an example of how the company put themselves in the place of the customer in order to not only find out what the needs of that customer were, but how to satisfy those needs. Straberg recruited executives from companies, to include: P&G and PepsiCo, companies who have also been placed in difficult situations, but in the end succeeded. 2. What are the advantages for...
