Cat’s Eye

In this excerpt written by Margaret Atwood, called “Cat’s Eye” the main character “Elaine” recalls her youth, and remembers how she had friends, she couldn't even like, but it was the only thing she had, she just couldn't let them go, no matter how they treated her.

Elaine is that type of person that hesitate to tell her friends ‘no’, but they are the only friends she has, and she does not want to be lonely. We see that already in the first couple of lines, specifically on line 3 “They're having a meeting. The meeting is about me”. She would just like her so called friends to accept her “I am just not measuring up, although they are giving me every chance. I will have to do better. But better at what?” (line 3-5).
Elaine wants to be apart of the group, not just be the standby person, who is always the fourth wheel, in this case. Cordelia is the boss of the group, deciding what is going to happen, and when it is going to. Elaine is jealous of her powers, but in the same time she loathe at her, “Perdie and Mirrie come up the stairs, along the hall, in their armour of being older. I long to be as old as they are. They're the only people who have any real power over Cordelia that I can see.” Elaine wants the power that Cordelia has, she wants to be the leader of the group, but at the same time she doubt her self, but just keep going on with her feelings, “ I think of them as my allies; or I think they would be my allies if they only knew. Knew what? Even to myself I am mute. “
Elaine now chances the way she describes this story, it gets more detailed, and describing why she does not like school and her friends. She starts to describe a more sensitive part of the history.
From line 49-100, she describes her daily morning routine. But she does not really describe a normal routine.
She is describing a routine where if she wants she ultimately can call in sick “I will have trouble: my stomach will contract, my hands will get cold, it will be difficult to swallow. “ (line 69-71). Elaine finds every excuse to not go to school, but most of all, not she her”friends”. She is obviously not feeling well inside, and does not want to go out to seem them.
This continues through out this paragraph, but in the end she has to make a decision, what ever to go to school, or stay at home. She always end up leaving, no matter how long time she can sit and watch the toaster. She always end up meeting them against her will “I'm outside the house there is no getting away from them” (line 100).
The reason why Elaine is looking back at her childhood with the pain she does, is because she is afraid that her children will go through the same as she did. She has this motherly instinct that makes her aggressive and scared for her kids. She experienced so much pain and struggle, and basically got bullied by her own friends. Elaine is almost paranoid, always asking how everything is going and if they are alright. The quote “Hatred would have been easier. With hatred, I would have known what to do. Hatred is clear, metallic, one-handed, unwavering; unlike love.” ends the excerpt. With this quote we know that if Elaine actually loved her friends in a way, because if she had hated them, she would had known what to do, meaning that the friendship she has with them today, wouldn't have existed.

The story is build up in the way that it drags the reader in to it. It makes the reader feel whatever Elaine is feeling. This is by the in depth descriptions, which makes you feel like you are not missing anything, or actually sitting in the room with her.
Atwood portrayed Elaine in a way that connects her with the reader, with a lot of contrasting themes, which makes the reader understand the pain, not only in the flashback, but also how she is feeling about her kids.
The reader will sit in the same dilemma of not knowing why she keeps choosing the way Elaine does, Why does she keep following these friends. That is how Atwood want os to feel, a part of the book. Watching every single step that Elaine takes, and how she develops as a person.
Atwood also combines the motherly instinct into the book, making it emotional, not only over for mothers, but everybody, because who want to go through that pain.
Atwood makes us ask ourselves that question of, how we treat people, but also what you should put up with.

Romeo and Juliet Critical Essay

...CATS Cats are clean and graceful animals requiring very little care. They instinctively clean themselves and do their "business" in dirt or cat litter before covering it up with their paws. It's a shame that cats get such bad publicity in the media and are considered dangerous animals in the view of most human beings. For example the saying that “these mean things will claw your eyes out” is really not true. Such a thing won't happen unless you corner a cat and/or it's afraid for its life. Each cat has their own personality, but most cats are very independent and can be very stubborn. (i.e. it's hard to train a cat to make it do what you want, like sit or roll over) They can also have a short temper, but will usually warn you before you really make them mad. After forming a bond of trust with the cat, they have nothing but love for an owner that treats them right. Cats are great at cuddling in bed, but If cuddling isn't your thing they will learn to give you your space and sleep at the foot of the bed or on a chair. Cats are very playful. They instinctively enjoy running around and catching things that move. Cats also will genuinely care about an owner they love. For example, if you leave the house/apartment they will worry that you left them, or if you or a loved one is crying they will often try to comfort you. It should also be noted that petting a cat is scientifically proven to lower blood pressure and stress. So go ahead, pet them all you want! They will...

Love

...Cats and Dogs Cats and dogs, an argument people have been having for centuries. This tension is so bad, there’s even a stereotype that dogs and cats don’t like each other either. Conversations like, which is better? Which one can see further? Whose nose is more sensitive? Which ones cleaner? Which one is friendlier? Who can hear further? Which one is easier to take care of? These are questions people argue every day. There are two different types of people in this world, dog lovers and cat lovers, and they both think their pets are the best. But how are they so sure? One big controversy between dogs and cats, is that both species lovers believe their pet can hear, see, and smell better than the other. But who’s correct? On the category of smell, dogs can smell human fingerprints that are a week old. Their noses are so sensitive they can even smell electricity. The source of the dogs exceptional smell ability is their wet nose, which of course a cat does not have. However, even though dogs may have the upper paw on smell, cats come on top with hearing. The cat’s outer ear flap can rotate 180 degrees and works like a high tech satellite to locate extremely faint noises. Cats can also hear higher pitches than dogs, a cats range starts at 30 hertz and goes up to 60 kilohertz. However a dog’s hearing only goes up to 40 kilohertz. Cats and dogs are red-green colored blind, meaning they see various shades of yellows, whites, and blues. Dogs have superior night vision however, they...

A Case of Murder by Vernon Scannell

...former action, one that might have had another possible outcome. Vernon Scannell deals with these feelings in his poem: A Case of Murder, in which we follow a young child at the age of 9 that is left home alone. His only company down in the basement is the family cat, a gold eyed black cat. The cat continuously irritates him by the buzzing sound that cats make when purring, he has always hated that sound. So he goes on to hit the cat with a stick, the cat hides away and hisses at him, the child joys in the cats pain, and decides to poke it. As a result that cat runs for the door in order escape this sadistic kid, unfortunately the child literally cuts off the cats escape by smashing the door into the feline, killing it. Frighten by his own excessive use of force against this cat makes him realize what just happened, he decides to hide the lifeless furry body within a cupboard. As time goes by he is beginning to hear strange sounds, catlike purring coming from the cardboard. Throughout the whole text, the cat is surrounded with some sort of evil presence, in a way Vernon Scannell makes us feel that the cat is somehow possessed by a demon of some sort, especially when he describes it; you really get the feeling that the cat is watching you. The same goes for the child, when he describes the evil grin: “He followed...

Ernest Hemingway Rain

...Cat in the Rain by Ernest Hemingway | Summary The short story "Cat in the Rain" was written by Ernest Hemingway in the 1920´s. It is about an American couple that spends their holidays in an Italian hotel. It is a rainy day and the American woman sees a cat in the rain, which she wants to protect from the raindrops. When she goes out of the hotel, which is kept by an old Italian who really seems to do everything to please that woman, and wants to get the cat, it is gone. After returning to the hotel room, she starts a conversation with her husband George, who is reading all the time, telling him how much she wants to have a cat and other things, for instance her own silver to eat with. Her husband seems to be annoyed by that and not interested at all. At the end of the story there is a knock on the door and the maid stands there holding a cat for the American woman in her hands.Peculiarities of the introduction The first thing that caught my eyes was the long description at the beginning. First there is a description of the environment in good weather, which means spring or summer, then a description of the momentary situation in the rain. This description creates an atmosphere that is sad, cold and unfriendly. To create this atmosphere Hemingway uses words such as "empty" or "the motorcars were gone". Later on, by looking at the relationship of the two Americans, you can see that this description was a foreshadowing of the state of the couple´s relationship: First it was...

My Companion

...talk to about your problems and who will listen. A companion is someone who doesn't judge you but likes you for you. I had one such companion. It wasn't your usual companion though. She wasn't another person. She was my pet cat, Squeaky. Squeaky had been a part of the family for as long as I could remember. She was with me since I was two and a half years old. At that time in my life, I didn't see Squeaky as anything but another play toy. But as I grew older, I saw that she was much more than a toy. In March of 1991, we moved. The adults in the family were busy packing things up and transporting them to the new house. My grandma was entertaining my sister and me. After the last load was unpacked, Mom realized that Squeaky wasn't at the new house. My cousins jumped in the car and went back to pick up my very frightened cat. Once she was in the new house, she immediately darted upstairs. She found comfort among my belongings. There she stayed until my aunts and uncles left. When she realized it was only my immediate family left, she began to wander about. She made sure all of our stuff had made it safely. She seemed to understand that this was to be our new home and gave her approval. She wasn't your ordinary cat. Of course she looked like any other cat with her long white fur and patches of brown and black spots. But there was more to Squeaky than her appearance. She had a personality that made her seem almost human. If I ever had a problem and needed someone to talk to, Squeaky...

Warriors Darkest Hour

...Preface: The Warrior Series: Sad to say, I have read a few of them when I was deployed in Afghanistan and Iraq. That’s because it’s what they would send me in care packages along with other goodies I liked. But that was another time and story in my life I care to put behind me. So, it has been expressed to me in the past that the ending to the first series was a little weak and I agree. The whole Tigerstar getting batted aside by some little wiener cat from Twolegplace rather than getting his ASS handed to him by Firestar was kind of lame in their eyes. Neither one liked it when a new “Bad Guy” shows up right at the last second and tries to take the place of a long standing relationship with a hated arch enemy, like you’re supposed to be afraid of this guy all of the sudden. Nope. The original Warriors series, released from 2003 to 2004, consists of six books, Into the Fire: Fire and Ice: Forest of Secrets: Rising Storm: A Dangerous Path and The Darkest Hour. Since The Darkest Hour is the last book I read in Iraq, I had to go to the library on Camp Pendleton to look over the book one more time before I started this. The top section in Italic is straight from the final battle in the 6th book, The Darkest Hour, which is my starting point for what you will read below. Anyway, not a great bit of writing on my part, especially the abrupt ending, but according to both my daughter’s, they thought it was a good attempt & agreed that if the story ended the way I put...

Samantha

...Fourteen years ago my life flashed before my eyes. Little did I know that my best friend would soon try to end my short life. Running down a never ending hall way, ankles bleeding, tears rolling down my cheeks, I was too young to die. Why was this happening to me? Samantha was my sister only hours before, and now she wanted to murder me in cold blood. Samantha was my cat, and I was three years old. In the early years, Samantha was a regular cat living the typical suburban cat lifestyle. She slept all day and enjoyed being rubbed on on her belly as she purred so softly. With her golden fur coat, she stood out from all the other neighborhood cats. Every once in a while, a dead bird would find its way to our door step. In a weird way, I always thought the dead animals she would bring us was her way of saying thanks for the love and care we gave her. I was too young at that time to understand that these tiny gifts that she brought to me were foreshadowing what would come later. In my little eyes, Samantha was the best cat and friend that any child could dream of having; but then things started to change. As the days passed and changed, so did Samantha’s characteristics that I loved so dearly. Her personality began to fade away from what I had known it to be. Instead of playing with the other cats in the neighborhood, Samantha began to display aggressive behavior and engage in cat fights. One morning she came home limping with cuts covering...

The Clouded Leopard

...Clouded Leopard The clouded leopards are fascinating median sized cats. Although it may seem that they belong in the big cat species, they are considered to be part of the small species. In fact, they are the largest of the small species. The clouded leopard is a very well reserved cat. They remain hidden from view and are very secretive. Therefore, not much is known about these cats in the wild. What we do know is how clouded leopards are in captivity. The clouded leopard has some very distinctive features. The clouded leopard and the domestic cat belong in the same family and do have similarities, but they also differ in a few ways. The clouded leopards are about 4 to 6 feet long. Almost more than half of this measurement is the tail. The clouded leopard’s tail is about 3 feet long and it can be longer. This unique feature along with their sharp claws and strong grip allows the clouded leopard to be a very good climber. With its long tail they can also climb upside down from beneath trees and they can also hang with their hind legs in trees. Their long tail provides the clouded leopard with great balance aid along with their short legs. Not only do they have short legs but they can also rotate their rear ankles. All these features combined allow the clouded leopard to land in a headfirst posture. Clouded leopards develop these climbing and leaping skills at a very young age. Although a domestic’s cat tail, and legs can also provide them with aid in balancing, their tail...
