Goals & Objectives:
This is a beginning course in modern standard (Mandarin) Chinese. Its goal is to lay a good Chinese foundation for further study, and to strive for an all-round development of communicative competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Mandarin Chinese in the context of Chinese culture.

Specifically, you will be able to understand short, learned utterances and some sentence-length utterances. Comprehension is limited to vocabulary and some simple questions/statements about family members, age, address, time, interests, and other daily activities. You will make short statements and ask simple questions. You will be able to identify and write at least 260 characters in simplified form and read, for instructional and directional purposes, standardized messages, such as some prices in stores, times/dates on schedules, etc. You will be able to write simple fixed expressions and limited memorized material; supply information on simple forms and documents; write names, numbers, dates, own nationality, and other simple autobiographical information as well as some short phrases and simple sentences.

In a word, you will attain approximately the Novice-Medium level on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) proficiency scale.

Texts:
Integrated Chinese, Level 1 Part I , by Tao-chung Yao and Yuehua Liu, et al., Cheng & Tsui Company, Boston, 2004 (3rd Edition). The textbook (including a workbook and a character workbook - all simplified character edition) can be purchased at the College Book Store in Ellis Hall.

CD:
The discs for the texts are available for purchasing at the book store too. It is extremely important that you listen many times to the CDs of each lesson and memorize the dialogues before you come to classes.

Evaluation:

Final course grades will be based on the results of:
1. Attendance and Participation: 30%
2. Quizzes and tests: 20%
3. Homework and Assignments: 25%
4. Midterm (Oral-5%) and Final (Written-10%; Oral-5%): 20%
5. Projects and cultural events: 5% Chinese character project 5%, presentation Nov.

Final grade for the semester:
93-100=A 83-87=B 73-77=C 63-67=D
90-92=A- 80-82=B- 70-72=C- 60-62=D-
88-89=B+ 78-79=C+ 68-69=D+ 0-59=E

Class Requirements:
Attendance: Attendance is mandatory. Missing class without legitimate reasons and valid supporting documents will inevitably affect your grade. Three unexcused absences will result in a 10% reduction in your final score. Six unexcused absences results in an F. An excused absence, eg. sickness, has to be arranged either before the class or on the same day of class. Anyone who is late for more than 15 minutes will be regarded as absent.

Class preparation and participation: Your class participation and performance will be evaluated daily and a final score will be given at the end of each class period on a regular basis on the following scale:

4 = Well prepared with excellent performance
3 = Gave some indication of good preparation
2 = Participated with inadequate preparation
1 = Present with almost no participation
0 = Absent

Homework and assignments: All homework and assignments must be turned in on the due date. Homework turned in late will be marked down by 10%. Homework more than one week overdue will NOT be accepted except for legitimate reasons. You are expected to practice reading aloud new dialogues EVERYDAY. Practice writing characters EVERYDAY! No language can be acquired overnight. You need to build up your Chinese language proficiency gradually through constant practice.

Quizzes and tests: Quizzes cannot be made up unless arrangements are made BEFORE being absent from class. You are not allowed to make up a missed test without a valid, written excuse.

Before you come to each class, you should learn the new words, listen to the tape, read the text and grammar explanations. Whenever a new lesson is introduced, a dialogue check will be given first.

Withdrawal Deadline:
You may withdraw from the course up to the last day of classes.

Some Advice

* Check the daily schedule in advance and always keep up with your assignments. * Do not wait until the last minute to finish your homework. Don’t cram at the last minute – rather, study regularly. * Be attentive and try to speak as much as you can. * If you have any questions or concerns about the class, please see me. * Do not be afraid of speaking up. Use Chinese as much as possible in and outside of class with classmates, instructor or Chinese friends. * It is OK to make mistakes. Remember, it is better to make mistakes and be corrected now than to be misunderstood later. * Use multiple alarm systems for waking up in the morning! * Adjust learning strategies promptly. * Find the best schedule reminder system for you so that you don’t miss assignments and appointments, etc.
