For my lesson 1 I started the lesson off with a book “Each Orange Had 8 Slices.” I read the book and we looked at the pages together. Each page had multiple problems for the child to solve. The first question I asked, “How many kids were there?” The child responded quickly with 3. I asked how many tricycles. He thought for a second and said 3. I said, “If we have 3 tricycles how many wheels are there altogether?” The child responded quickly with 6. I then asked if he could show me how he got the answer. He paused for a moment and did not say anything. I encouraged him by telling him he could use the picture to help him. He then began to point and count the individual wheels in the picture. He told me there is 9. I moved on to …show more content…
The activity was called Touching Numbers. In this activity I filled zip-lock bags with paint and sealed it up. I pulled out the zip-lock bags of paint for the child and he was immediately excited. The child was inquisitive, and really wanted to know what we would be doing with them. I told him we were going to be writing numbers in the paint. I showed him how to write by using a finger to write in the paint. I showed him if he ran his hand over the paint (in plastic bag) it erased the number and he could write a new one. He quickly did all of the numbers with no problem. I then decided to take away the paper showing him how the numbers looked. I told him he would need to write 1-30 on his own. When he got to the number 7 he wrote it backwards. I stopped him and asked if he could show me the 7 again. He wrote the number again and it was still backwards. I told him that he was writing it backwards and showed him how to write it properly. He then wrote it correctly. I had him erase it and write it 3 more times to help practice. I then had him continue writing the rest of the numbers. The child struggles with 23 as well he was writing his three backwards. I used the same strategy I had just used for number 7. After he finished writing the rest of the numbers I had him practice a few of the numbers he was struggling with (3, 7, 23, and 27). I had him write these numbers …show more content…
I had the child do a few addition problems using unfix cubes. I started off with 4 + 3 which I represented on the plate using the cubes. I asked the child what the problem represented to make sure he understood the game. He said it was 4 + 3 showing he understood the problem. I asked him what 4 + 3 equals. The child quickly responded with the answer 6. I said can you show me how you got your answer. He then proceeded to count the unfix cubes. He did not count the cubes when he gave me his first answer. After he finished counting the cubes he said the answer was 7. I moved on to the next question which was 6 + 3. Before I could even ask him a question he blurted out the answer is 8. I asked him if he could show me how he got his answer. He then counted the unfix cubes one by one and changed his answer to 9. I did one more question similar to these ones with the same results. I stopped him and explained to him he needs to slow down and use the cubes. I explained that there was no race to get to the answer.
