Day 6: Setting

The setting of the story today was split between this morning, 15 minutes ago, 5 minutes ago, and now. In this morning, it took place in a hospital where captain cold’s sister was dying from a tumor. 15 minutes ago Barry, patty, and iris were on a cruise ship eating and talking. I don't know what's happening in the 5 minutes ago, but I do know that in the present, captain cold and the flash are fighting. As you can see, the setting changes. The culture of the setting is suspenseful.

Day 7: Character

Today, I took a break from reading the flash to read some news. The main characters are robots that make food. Currently, the robots can only make simple things like pizza, burgers, and sandwiches. The robots probably won't make …show more content…
As I read, the suicide squad was being tortured by scarecrow and his crew. They were being asked who they were working for but they refused to say. Everyone who had been tortured either got knocked out or had a flashback of when and how they got brought to prison. For example, with Deadshot, it talked about one of his attempted assassinations of an important person when batman caught him.

Day 2: Setting

The setting today was in the torture building and in a football stadium. Obviously, it changes. The culture of the setting was suspense because you weren't sure who was going to confesse. However, it turned out that the torturers were just part of the suicide squad making sure no one would confesse. If they did, they died (but they didn't know that). Only six out of about thirty survived and didn't confesse. These six were then deported to a football stadium because there were some zombies/cannibals attacking people.

Day 3: Character

The main characters include el Diablo, Harley Quinn, and Deadshot. Some other characters include king shark, black spider, and voltaic. I can relate to el Diablo because he doesn't want to hurt people unlike pretty much everyone else, and I wouldn't want to hurt anyone either. The traits that the characters have are evil but good at the same time. This is because they do bad things but are currently doing them for the greater

Shirley Jackson Inhumanity In The Lottery

...Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” isn’t quite what it seems. The misleading title fills the reader with a sense of excitement and hope of winning something, much like the modern day lottery, yet this short story is far from that reality. As a decades old tradition, the lottery drawing is conducted once every year throughout the village to find one winner, or victim, who is singled out by the community. The person who draws the paper with a black dot on it faces being stoned to death by the villagers. In Jackson’s “The Lottery,” customs and traditions normalize unspeakable acts and inhumanity for the townspeople. Jackson offers a great deal of irony by having the setting be in a small village of “only about three hundred people” (539). By illustrating...

They'Re Not Your Husband

...They’re not your husband ”They’re not your husband” is a short story written by Raymond Carver. The story was published in 1973 in a literary magazine, called Chicago Review. The definition of a short story is typically a brief work of literature. The story has no set length and there are often few characters introduced in the story. The short story usually focuses on one plot, one main character, and one central theme. That is the opposite compared to a novel. The short story is characterized by the beginning, where the reader is thrown into the story. This type of introduction we call “in medias res”. This statement is Latin and means "middle of the action.” In all short stories there is an open ending. The open ending is an opened question, which means that you can imagine an ending. In the story ”They’re not your husband”, we have the themes obsession, control, insecurity, selfishness and appearance. Kit Wright writes the poem “Give Up Slimming, Mum” and in the poem we have the opposite theme; appreciation, happiness, accept, unity and presence. Earl and Doreen are the main characters in “They’re not your husband”. They are married but there is a tense atmosphere between them. They do not seem to love each other. There is no connection and no intimacy. Doreen is the hardworking woman. She works as a waitress at a coffee shop, which is open 24 hours a day. She must work late, because when Earl comes to the shop, to get coffee, she askes him about the children. “You sure...

Indian Camp

...Indian Camp The short story Indian Camp is about Nick Adams and his father (Dr. Adams), who rows out to an Indian Camp, because there is an Indian lady, who has been in labor for two days. Nick is with his father on work, because he is about to be a grown up and therefore his father thinks, that it is in time, that Nick sees how life is created – but not the consequences of life. Through this day Nick goes through some rite of passages, because he learns how to make his own decisions without getting influenced by his father. Indian Camp happens in the 1920’s, where it was written, because of the primitive conditions. The short story takes place in an Indian camp, which look we picture in our heads, because the camp and its surroundings are described detailed in the text (page 13 line 16-19). There are three characters included in the action; Nick Adams, his father (Dr. Adams) and the American Indian woman. Nick is the protagonist in the short story, who goes through a rite of passage, which makes him develop. In the beginning he sits in his father’s arms on their way to the Indian camp, where the father says that the reason to, why they are going over to Indian camp is because, there is an Indian lady very sick (page 12 line 14). It is a very pedagogic way to say, that there is a woman, who has been in labor for two days. On their way home, Nick sits in the stern, while his father is rowing (page 16 line 21-22). Through this day Nick grows so much mentally, because he experiences...

1919

...Contrast There are many similarities between the short stories “1919” and “The Red Convertible”, mainly relating to the two main characters Shadrack and Henry. Both of the stories focus on the return of the two main characters coming home from war. Shadrack from WWI and Henry from the Vietnam War. Both of these wars were extremely brutal, WWI having over 100,000 US casualties and the Vietnam War having just over 58,000 US casualties. These astonishing amount of casualties allow us to see the reasoning behind the problems that each main character finds themselves with in their respective stories. Both Shadrack and Henry suffer from what would nowadays be diagnosed as post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD. PTSD is an anxiety disorder which is caused by very stressful, frightening or distressing events and is very commonly diagnosed to war veterans. Shadrack’s PTSD was the result of seeing one of his fellow comrades shot in the face whilst stood next to him and Henry’s PTSD was the result of being captured by Vietnamese soldiers and held captive for 6 months. You can see that both Shadrack and Henry are severely affected by the events that they experienced at war, both of their personalities and behavior are clearly changed. Another similarity between the two stories is that both Shadrack and Henry are ethnic minority soldiers, Shadrack being of black ethnicity and Henry Native American. Although during the time period where both stories are set place there was a bad prejudice towards...

The Whaler

...Irish short story “The Whaler” introduces us to the tale of a whaler’s and a young boy’s meeting, whereby the author uses flashbacks to introduce different themes, such as; growing up - the progress of becoming an adult rather than just a naive boy. The setting of the story is in Ireland, on the top of a hill with fields surrounding it (p. 1 l. 1-2), not a completely deserted hill, but within sight of town (p. 4 l. 154-155). Presumably, a small town, since the town was too small for the Whaler (p. 1 l. 8), besides that, everybody seems to know each other, the Whaler and narrator know about one another, and they both know about Mrs. Early. The short story is the flashback of a man, who remembers his first, and only, meeting with his idol, therefore, the setting is not present time. The flashback appears, firstly, by this short story being written in past tense, pointing out it already happened, which the narrator gives us a slight, yet subtle, hint of; “The idol of my young imagination.” (p. 1 l. 6). This narrator, is not only telling the story, but reliving it, due to the flashback. The narrator is first person, and uses I quite often. The narrator is the boy, whom we follow during the short story. He’s remembering, when he met his idol, a moment in his life, which has had great significance, and has left a mark on him. During the short story, and the flashback we are able to extract that the narrator, firstly, is a young admirer, and fan of the Whaler (p.1 l. 6-7), he...

Ghosts by Naomi Wood

...Ghosts by Naomi Wood The short story by Naomi Wood was written in 2012, and is about Pia, who is a middle-aged woman and the day where the short story takes place, is her 40th birthday. In this story we meet Pia, her partner Daniel and random people from the streets and of course Pia is our main character. The short story starts in the middle of Pia’s day, she just finished working and she is about to leave the car park at work. She is on her way home, where her partner Daniel waits to take her to a restaurant to celebrate her birthday, but on her way home she is reflecting over what it means to turn 40. The short story is told in a chronological order, but with flash back-like situations “Giving in, she ghosted back through memory. She drank the coffee, ate the omelette, took down the laundry...”. What’s most important is the middle and the ending of the short story, how Pia starts by thinking that turning forty will only be the first of many depressing situations, but actually comes to the conclusion that it is only as depressing as you make it. It is kind of an open ending where the author puts in a line saying “Time waits for no man” which sums up on every reflections Pia had during her drive home. The atmosphere of the story is to begin with really tense and dim because of how Pia feels about herself. Turning 40 should be something to celebrate but for Pia it is the same as starting digging your own grave. When she hears the news of the neutrinos she “…wondered...

The Decline of the West

...getting the newest phone, wearing the most expensive clothing and every other materialized thing, to show off how much money we have. We measure our happiness in things, clothes, cars and so on. The greed of getting more and new things is decreasing. Before the financial crises in 2008 every family lent money to buy new things all the time. No worries were to be shown in any family, until the crack happened. Nowadays the crisis has slowly turned around again and in school it’s still about collecting the newest items. In the short story from 2010 by Hanif Kureishi, the problem of greed and a materialized world is a central theme in the story. Divorced, Beheaded, Survived

...is a short story written by Robin Black in 2010. It deals with the theme “death” a specifically engages in how death affects our relations. The short story contains mental and social issues connected to losses and the generational recurrence of these. “Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” shows how a woman’s life was changed because of her brother’s death and how she is still affected as an adult. The main theme in the short story is depression caused of a death. The following essay focuses on the structure and symbols in the short story. “Divorced, Beheaded, Survived” is about a 40-year-old mother - Sarah, from whose the point of view is told – therefore a first person narrator. The woman looks back upon an essential episode in her childhood when her older brother became sick and died. The setting is also important in these realizations. The story takes place in Manhattan in the present, but the setting of Sarah’s childhood home is described positively with a sense of calming familiarity. “Day after day, dusk really, in the time between school and dinner, in the small, untended yard behind my childhood home…” When we see at the setting the exiting aspect is to see at the lack of details in the description. The result of this is that the focus of the story becomes the emotional way Sarah experiences and creates a deeper understanding of death and all it’s terrible consequences. The emotional aspect of the history is boosted through the structure of the short story. The short story...
