Employees treat and communicate differently with leaders than they do with managers. People are more ready to listen and learn from leaders, where managers are usually giving orders or direction. It is a common thing for people to complain about their managers and who they think run the tasks or job assignments, but rarely do people complain about their leaders. Management is a position, but leadership is an action (Tschohl, J., 2014, p. 48). Employees need to understand that being in a position of management, does not make someone a leader and therefore they cannot expect the person to exhibit leadership qualities. Management and managers often do not work or communicate well with their employees (Tschohl, J., 2014, p. 48). This is common …show more content…
Leadership and management together make an organization efficient and effective. One is focused on doing the right things while the other is concentrated on doing things right (Schneider, M., 2003, p. 11). One without the other might work for a while but it will lack efficiency and/or effectiveness in the long run. This is why it is critical for an organization to make sure they have both a productive manager and a good leader, whether it is the same person or two different individuals. Schneider mentions that one of the largest and most prominent problems in the business world today is too little leadership and too much management (2003, p. 11). This assessment provided a wide range of information about the different styles of leadership I possess and suggestions on how I can improve. It was very thorough and I tried to answer the questions and items without putting too much thought into it so I would not over think it. I think this worked well as the assessment confirmed some things that I already knew and opened my eyes to other traits and skills. According to one section in the assessment, I can manage and am dependable, I am oriented towards people, and I build quality relationships. By being able to manage in a dependable manner, I take this as a management quality that I possess. The traits of being people oriented and building relationships are leadership traits that have been discussed previously. However, I often require a manager to receive information and to manage the time spent on activities. This management skill is something I intend to work on by looking for opportunities where I can volunteer information and learn to manage time more
