Issue of reduced workload of Final Year Projects (FYP) Coordinator was discussed in Directors meeting # 1/14 dated 16-Jan-2014. The following decision was approved by the Rector and to be implemented w.e.f Spring 2014 semester:

One FYP Coordinator will be assigned 25 projects. The workload generated from 25 FYP’s shall be considered equivalent to the workload of one course. Each FYP group should normally comprise 2-3 students. In exceptional cases, a single student may be allowed FYP.

2. In view of above change, revised workload policy is enclosed at Annex-I for compliance at campuses. This supersedes this Office IOM # 7/14 dated January 4, 2014.

Workload policy Spring 2014 Semester

Dear All

Workload policy was reviewed recently after 3 years of initial formulation. The review considered PEC recommendations and also consulted developed-world benchmarks such as Association of American University Professors (AAUP), given at Annex-A.

2. It was observed that NU policy was considerably relaxed in comparison. The unit based calculator of maximum 100 points was inadvertently diverting the high cost teaching resources to other non-instructional activities. It was noted that the NU policy was causing sub-optimal utilization of the most critical teaching resources which was having direct adverse consequences for teaching quality and University operating costs. The policy was also jeopardizing the supervision of non-HEC funded PhD students, MS/MBA students and final year projects of Bachelor degree students due to increased enrollment.

3. During the review, the intent was to update the NU policy to align with PEC recommendations which are given at Annex-A for future reference. However, it was felt that since that would be a considerable departure from our existing workload practice at the University, therefore they would require careful consideration and a phased roll out to ensure smooth transition. In the meanwhile, the following revisions in the workload policy have been approved by the Rector w.e.f Spring Semester 2013.

a) Principle of Workload Policy The University intends to periodically update the teaching workload requirements, to keep them aligned with established local and international benchmarks and best practices with a view to requirements of the University. b) Workload Policy Following is the workload policy. 1. Regular full time faculty members shall teach three courses per semester (6 courses per year). 2. Directors & HODs, in view of their administrative responsibilities, shall teach two courses per semester (four courses per year). 3. Paid extra teaching to full time faculty (excluding Lab Engineers and Lab Instructors) will be allowed only under special circumstances on case to case basis with prior approval of the Rector. 4. Course allocation policy should be worked out which is just, dynamic, transparent and equitable. The present monotonous policy of allocating the same courses year after year does not add to intellectual development nor does it enrich educational experience of students. Allocating elementary courses to PhDs also needs a reversal for assigning advanced and demanding courses to highly qualified faculty. 5. Faculty not taking full teaching workload shall have their salaries reduced proportionally. 6. Those who intend to get reduction in workload as per new research policy should get prior approval of the Rector with concrete plan and evidence of research potential and output. Those who do not get prior approval will have their salary reduced on pro-rata basis. 7. Workload calculator will stand suspended w.e.f. Spring Semester 2013. 8. One FYP Coordinator will be assigned 25 projects. The workload generated from 25 FYP’s shall be considered equivalent to the workload of one course. Each FYP group should normally comprise 2-3 students. In exceptional cases, a single student may be allowed FYP. Non-instructional activities which were earlier covered under workload calculator have been monetized as follows: Activity | Amount in Rs | i). Up to max of 5 projects at a time by a Teacher | iv). Administrative & coordination work. Engagement of faculty in administrative tasks will be discouraged. The University has separate staff for admin work. In case of shortage of staff, additional staff can be engaged. | Exceptional situations can be approved by the Rector on case to case basis. Prior approval of the Rector is essential. Appropriate administrative staff where ever needed may be recruited to relieve the concerned Directors and HODs from routine administrative work. | 10. Entitlement to non-instructional activities shall be subject to the prior approval of the Rector, which will be granted on a case to case basis. 11. Workload by campuses should be submitted on time before the start of semester. 12. Course allocation should be entered in NEON prior to start of semester. Information in NEON related to course-load should always be up-to-date. HODs and Managers (Academics) should be responsible for up-keep of latest information in NEON. 13. Campuses should strictly comply with and adhere to policy and procedures of workload. 4. This supersedes all earlier communications on the subject with immediate effect.
