Lucy Character
Lucy is a young girl whose wealthy parents send her to camp every summer. She is adventurous and free thinker, not caring what others think about her, unlike her friend Lois. She becomes unhappy with her life in Chicago because of problems with her parents. We never know why or how she disappears when the campers go on the canoe trip. The similarities Lucy and Mrs. Das share with each other is that they are both female who lives in US. As the story begins to grow more intense we find out that these two females aren’t honest. For example, Mrs. Das lied about her affair that happened eight years ago that she cheated on her husband with his friend. Mrs. Das became pregnant with a child and hide this secret from her husband.
Setting Araby
Setting and story are closely integrated in "Araby." The alleyway, the busy commercial street, the open door of Mangan’s house, the room in back where the priest died, the way to school—all are parts of the locations which shape the life and consciousness of the narrator. Before the narrator goes to Araby, it is his thoughts about this exotic, mysterious location that crystallize for him his adoration of Mangan’s sister, who is somehow locked into his "Eastern enchantment" (paragraph 12) of devotion and unfulfilled love. At the end the lights are out, the place is closing down for the night, and the narrator recognizes Araby as a symbol of his own lack of reality and unreachable hopes. Seemingly, all his aims are dashed by his adolescent lack of power and by the drunken and passive-aggressive uncle. Ireland Dublin
Plot
The year is 1894. The place is North Richmond Street in Ireland's largest city, Dublin. The street dead-ends at an empty house of two stories, says the unidentified narrator, a boy of about twelve who lives on the street with his uncle and aunt. A priest was once a tenant in the house they occupy. After he died, the narrator explored his quarters
Character
Boy of about twelve who becomes infatuated with the sister of his friend, Mangan. Although she hardly notices him and converses with him only once, he fantasizes about her and tells her he will buy her a gift if he attends a bazaar called Araby. He seems to regard her as noble and pure of heart, like a maiden in a tale of chivalry. His trip to the bazaar to find her the gift then becomes something of a knight's quest on behalf of his lady fair.
Isolated, crush, shame, reflection, irish, male, age 13, religion, journey, attraction, orphan Alienation and Loneliness: the boy tells no one about his feelings for Mangan's sister--not his friends, his family, nor the girl herself. He is isolated in his crush and in his illusion, and later, in his awakening or epiphany.

P.O.V First person
Symbolism
“Araby” watches from his parlor window for the appearance of Mangan’s sister. The suspense for these young boys centers in that space separating the interior life from the exterior life. Windows also mark the threshold between domestic space and the outside world, and through them the characters in Dubliners observe their own lives as well as the lives of others.
The bazaar is another form of symbolism which allow the boy to go on adventure. In Joyce's short story, the young narrator views Araby as a symbol of the mystique and allure of the Middle East. When he crosses the river to attend the bazaar and purchase a gift for the Mangan girl, it is as if he is crossing into a foreign land, like a knight-errant, on a mission on behalf of his lady fair. But his trip to the bazaar disappoints and disillusions him, awakening him to the harsh reality of life around him
Blind Street: Street that dead-ends. In the story and in real life, Dublin's North Richmond Street is a dead end, as Joyce points out in the first four words of "Araby"—perhaps to suggest that the boys playing on it are going nowhere. They will grow up to live in the same dreary Dublin, with its dull weather, dull people, and dull houses. In the third paragraph, the narrator describes the depressing atmosphere:
Apple tree: In this story the apple symbolize knowledge, temptation and the fall of man and sin.
Praying: religious concept.
Theme
The principal idea of "Araby" is that youthful love is childish and foolish, but that it is also normal, overpowering, and creative. Ideally, memories like those the narrator is describing about his infatuation for Mangan’s sister should be a cause for fondness, mingled perhaps with wonder and also amusement. Much of the narrator’s memory exhibits just such beauty.

Setting death by Landscape
The story took place in wilderness, nature and the campsite. Canada. The story took place after world war II.
The story starts and end in modern setting in Lois’s apartment which over looks lake Ontario in Canada.
The flashbacks take place in this camp that is located in the Canadian wilderness. The camp is for young girls.
Plot
An older women who now lives alone remembers her time with a childhood friend. Lois went to a summer camp when she was younger and met her friend lucy. While on a canoe trip, Lucy disappears. No one ever finds. Lois spends the rest of her life collecting landscape painting and believes that through these paintings, Lucy is still with her.

Symbolism.
I believe that the symbolism in this story is the paintings. They seem to be a constant reminder of the past; a past of sadness, loss of a friend, and lack of closure. When we read “Death by Landscape” we are able to picture the girls on their campsite and we can envision the wilderness around them, which makes it much more interesting and gives it that effect of realism. Throughout the story, we can clearly see how nature is presented as a negative role in Lois’ life. Her fear towards it is represented from the beginning, with her assumption that there was something more to her paintings. Atwood attempts to show the readers a symbolic perspective of the story, with describing each scene of the wilderness, and why Lois may have chose the paintings that she did. Though her walls are filled with landscape paintings, Lois’ inability to reconnect with the wilderness appears to be connected to her regrets about Lucy’s death.
Window
In this short story the window symbolize is a way of escaping from reality, or to finding things out or revealing.
The mood in the story is depressing which draws attention to small details such as how the nature was described in dull, dark colors to show sadness.

Theme
The theme of wilderness can also be used in a more calming manner as an escape from the harshness of society. The image of nature can perhaps be interpreted as the pureness of the world as well, and as forests are removed, the image of the world becomes tainted.
When traumatic events occur in people’s lives, it often shapes how that person turns out as an adult. Their pasts can affect them positively or negatively, and this depends on how that person copes with it
Style and tone
The story is told in flashback and in past tense until Lucy disappearance which will change to present tense. The tone is mysterious and depressing.
Characters
Lucy is a young girl whose wealthy parents send her to camp every summer. She is adventurous and free thinker, not caring what others think about her, unlike her friend Lois. She becomes unhappy with her life in Chicago because of problems with her parents. We never know why or how she disappears when the campers go on the canoe trip. She is not honest person, her physical appreance is with blonde hair, unhappy,
Lois
A 65 years old who looks back to her teenage years, isolated, crush, reflection, journey, female, values, Canadian, family, Interpreter of Maladies: Setting Zoo: change in the environment such as in the US animals are kept inside and locked but in India the monkey are everywhere and free. Car: most of the story take place in the car. Sun temple: Probably the clearest example of symbolism is the Temple of the Sun. The drying of a river created the harsh, dry environment surrounding the temple, which is a symbol of life. Lahiri appears to suggest that the temple began to deteriorate due to the environmental changes. Symbols Sensual images run throughout the story, supporting Kapasi’s self-deception that he may have a romance with Mrs. Das. The carvings on the temple of naked bodies making love and the recurring images describing Mrs. Das’s sensuous attire juxtaposed with the frumpy images of Kapasi’s wife serve to create sexual tension in Kapasi’s mind.

The Camera
Mr. Das’s camera represents his inability to see the world clearly or engage with it. Because he views the world through his camera, Mr. Das misses the reality of the world around him, both in his marriage and in the scenes outside the cab
Puffed rice, insubstantial and bland, represents Mrs. Das’s mistakes and careless actions. Physically, Mrs. Das is young and attractive, but she is spiritually empty. She does not love her children or husband and is caught in the boredom of her life as a housewife
The reader can interpret the erotic images on the wheels of the chariot as symbols of marital union (97). The whole image of the temple suggests a link between the failing marriages of both parties and the crumbling of their lives. A loveless marriage provides the perfect environment for feelings of pain and loneliness that both Mr. Kapasi and Mrs. Das experience

Characters
Mr. Kapasi is no typical character: he is educated, works two jobs in which he uses his lingual abilities, and lives daily without affection from his wife. Mr. Kapasi plays an important role in galvanizing the plot and ultimately conveying the beauty and cruelty of life. He is integral in expressing the differences and similarities between the tourists and himself.
Theme
How the society can classify each group of people based on their race, statues and job.
Plot
The story is about an Indian family who has been living in the states through generation to generation visit india for the first time with their family. Mr. Das hired Mr. Kapsi as their driver to drive them to the Sun Temple.

Advertising to Children

...Should We Restrict Marketing to Children? Kelli Zimmerman-Klemp November 25, 2013 Ethics and Decisions Should We Restrict Marketing to Children? This issue of whether or not advertising aimed at children should be restricted is a strange one to me. When presented with the issue, my first thought was, “Assuming, of course, that the advertising is truthful (which, if it’s not, is a problem unrelated to whom its target audience is), why would we need to restrict advertising to children?” Thinking about it a bit, I was unable to think of a reason why it would be wrong to market to kids. Picking up Taking Sides Clashing Views in Business Ethics and Society (Newton, Englehardt, & Pritchard), I was eager to learn why such advertising might be harmful, and thus, unethical, for children. In reading the introduction to the debate, I was reminded that “children do not have the fully developed cognitive skills necessary for making…an informed decision” (Newton et al., p. 256). I had a feeling this last sentence would play a role in the argument against marketing to children. Stop the Presses I began with Stephanie Clifford’s 2010 article from The New York Times, “A Fine Line When Ads and Children Mix” (Newton et al., p.258). Clifford specifically addresses advertising in magazines aimed at children. The Children’s Advertising Review Unit, an arm of the Council of Better Business Bureaus set up by the National Advertising Review Counsel (asrcreviews.org), has been set up...

Economy

...1.Discuss how the two cases in this chapter illustrate the major theme of this text: changes in the macro environment affect individual firms and industries through the microeconomic factors of demand, production, cost and profitability. Drawing on current business publications, find some updated facts for each case that support this theme. Both the cases McDonald’s in China and Wal-Mart in Mexico show how the interplay of microeconomic and macroeconomic factors influences managers’ competitive strategies. For both of these company, expansion abroad was a strategic move that helped offset slowing in the United States. However, both cases show how companies had to understand consumer behavior in these countries and the nature of competition from both local and international sources. is prevalent that several changes in the macro environment have had an effect on the profitability of individual firms and industries. The text states that downturns in economic activity forced all the fast-food companies to develop new strategies. During this economic downturn McDonald’s was one company in particular that has developed strategies that were influenced by microeconomic changes. A great example is when McDonald’s entered the Chinese market they had to take into consideration consumer taste and acceptance in China. They had to decided whether or not to have the menu in Chinese or English and whether or not to take on the American menu or add more Chinese influenced menu items. Cost...

What Is Thomas Springer's Inventory

...2. From Thomas Springer’s inventory, multiple things can be deduced about his life and daily activities. For one thing, it is evident that Thomas Springer did work outside, most likely agricultural and lumber work. He has both a large amount of supplies intended for work outside, including crowbars, axes, and plows, as well as a large portion of agricultural and lumber goods, such as potatoes, cider, and wood. Not only this, but it is noticeable that he has more boots than he has drawers. The fact that he would have more boots than underwear shws that he certainly has a great need for boots, a need which would be justified by daily outdoor agricultural work. Although it is obvious that a good portion of this man’s day and his income is determined by outdoor work, it is also evident that his time is not entirely dominated by such work. It is listed that he has “a lot of books”. It can be assumed that if Springer had no time remaining outside of his agricultural work, then he would be unable to have time to read and thus be unlikely to accumulate many books. Therefore Springer most likely has spare time outside of working, which he is able to use for leisure. This, along with the fact that Springer is able to afford not only a lot of books for pure leisure, but also 2 slaves shows that, although perhaps not extremely wealthy, Springer is certainly well off and providing for himself beyond sustenance. Springer is evidently, thorugh agricultural and lumber work, making a healthy...

Organizational Behavior

...obesity. Moreover, obese children have a much higher risk of many health problems such as coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers--all of which are fatal if left untreated. In 2010, a mother from California sued McDonald’s over the company’s marketing practice of Happy Meal. The mother claimed that McDonald’s used alluring toys to lure kids into Happy Meal. This lawsuit, which might be viewed by many as senseless and absurd, was one of McDonald’s biggest cases. In order to come out of the lawsuit ahead, this largest fast food chain had to undergo some major organizational changes. In this paper, we would like to use the knowledge learned in the class to analyze the event (the lawsuit) and its effects on McDonald’s. The paper will have four main parts. In the first part, we provide a brief introduction of the company, McDonald’s, and the lawsuit. In the second part, we will use the concepts learned in class to analyze Happy Meal’s influencing strategies and the organizational changes during and after the suit. We believe that Happy Meal’s influencing strategies deserve our attention as they were the main causes of the crisis. Since its Happy Meal’s influencing...

A Happy Meal for a Happy Mind

...A Happy Meal for the Mind When I was a little girl I always thought it was a treat to visit McDonalds. This magical place had a giant play-place, ice cream, French fries and of course that special surprise toy contained inside the happy meal. What else could I have wanted? This world lost all of its glamour however, when I became a teen who experienced the inner workings of this land from the side of employment. I will never forget the place that was to be my first experience of the working world. My Fifteenth birthday had just passed and this meant I was finally old enough to enter the work force. So I went to the only place in the area that would hire a kid without experience or a driver’s license, McDonalds. Now, I wasn't entirely thrilled about the idea of working in this environment but if I wanted to get a car in the next year it was off to work for me. Somewhat sullenly, I donned my uniformed baseball cap and made my way behind the service counter. Feeling a little nervous, I fumbled as I attempted to tie my apron behind my back. I began to wonder what I might be assigned to do first. "Well, as long as I can work behind the scenes and avoid talking to people I should be okay." I thought. Standing motionless, I observed the fast-food frenzied scene. Employees were running here and there yelling to one another, order screens were flashing, various machines were buzzing...

...Running head: NOT KILLED ONLY STRONGER Not Killed Only Stronger Ilderina Kajtezovic Davenport University Disappointment, disbelief and fear filled my mind as I lie on my side, sandwiched between the cold metal bar of the seat and hot slick plastic dashboard of the car. The warm sun was beaming on my left cheekbone. All I felt was a wriggle from my seatbelt, the force of the impact pulling me into the air bag and suddenly jerking me back into the seat. Motility from the seatbelt pressed down on my left shoulder with monster force. Not being able to move even an inch was a feeling, in which filled my body with fear, discourage and terror. In that same moment the right side of my body began to feel numb as if I had been holding it in a bucket of ice for hours. My lungs feeling shut not allowing air to neither enter nor escape my body. Lying there, watching cars pass by me, I cried for help, but my voice was unheard. Now all I felt I could do is just lie there and wait for help to come or slowly die. “Buzz,” I hear the alarm clock trying to wake me up. I leaned over and hit the snooze button. Thinking to myself all I need is five more minutes. Knowing in reality those five minutes were not going to make a difference, either way I still needed to be at work in an hour. After the second buzz I finally woke up. Groggily sliding out of my warm comfortable bed, and slipping into the warm shower. I dragged myself into the shower slowly like a turtle. Attitude is the very gist of an individual's way of thinking; it is an individual's ideals, his concepts of right and wrong, and all his/her aspirations. In a nutshell, attitude can be defined as the totality of the individual himself. Man is, I'd say, what his attitude is. His thinking, his views, his likes, and dislikes are all enveloped in the single word i.e. 'attitude'. The next point for us to understand that we discover how these attitudes grow in an individual, are they inborn or are they a later growth in man's life. To this question, the answer is that, yes, some aspects of an individual's attitude are inborn, inherited and taken in due to his/her circumstances. This is because what an individual grows with, has got to have an influence on his life's pattern and his personal thinking, which account for his attitude. However, as he grows, and comes out of his shell out of his very personal circumstances, and develops his own attitudes to several things. Though at this stage of his being a grown up person, some changes may occur according to the needs of the...

Benefits of Breastfeeding

...Viresh Gulati - Diary Entry BEHS 343 Section 6381 You are expecting your first child and are interested in breastfeeding your baby. You would also like to return to work relatively soon. You have to decide how valuable breastfeeding is and whether you can work and breastfeed. The scenario is not true for me in real life since I have three kids, but was a concern when we were having our first child 14 years ago. June 7, 2015 We are expecting our first child! This is a very exciting and happy time of our lives and we can hardly wait to hold our little bundle of joy. But there is a lot to prepare and plan before the arrival of our baby. We have to paint and decorate the baby’s room, register for the baby shower and outline a plan of who will be taking care of the baby when we are back at work. And thinking of going back to work brings a very significant question to mind - are we going to breastfeed the baby or use formula? In my class “Parenting Today” I have read that breastfeeding an infant has a lot of health advantages. It helps protect babies against infectious diseases by strengthening their immune system. The advantages of breastfeeding are numerous, both for the baby as well as for the mother. Studies have shown that breastfeeding promotes the development of mother-child relationship. Research has proved that breastfed babies have healthier immune systems to fight infections; they are less likely to develop childhood obesity and the problems associated with it; they...
